I kinda expected more of Subahibi. The story in itself was fine, but this is just like baldr sky dive: Bloated, repetitive and not edited. It's show, don't tell, not show and tell. Could've been a lot more.
Though I only finished the main playthrough, I doubt my general opinion will change, should I do some more branches in the last 3 chapters. Stuff like Jabberwocky 2 is a great example for something that should've never been outright told. Even without it, the reader knows what roughly happened and that is enough for the story. By outright telling it, it not only ruined the pacing, but also made the final part feel like a random asspull. For how philosophical it wanted to be, it sure didn't want to give any room for the player to fill in gaps.

Honestly, that cat route the writer did in Himanatsu, where the formerly responsible writer just somehow didn't do their job, was better.
I personally just really hate pointless repetition and outright flashbacks/in your face telling of things you already know enough about. To me that shit is the worst, as I first enjoy filling the gaps, just to then get bored with the story VERY SLOWLY and with way too much filler do the same. Fuck show and tell. At least don't show first.

I don't disagree that this general is garbage and full of unnecessarily hostile schizos though.

Been meaning to read it for a while now, but I finished the main game of Itsusora as my first time reading something by Shumon Yuu.
He really nails the initial feeling of slipping into a seemingly normal but peculiar world and the mystery that slowly surrounds everything. Then the latter half of the game can only be described as a wild ride, which may be mostly due to the fact that almost nothing about the larger fantasy setting is explained until the epilogue.

It was fun to read the whole way through, but I honestly liked the writing of the characters and their relationships more than anything else, and for me the game kind of suffers during the times it focuses more on the battles and random chuuni shit happening in the background. The low fantasy setting of the common route would've been perfect if the stakes were raised without going too far. The way the game explores the power and limitations of words and names/kotodama was really interesting and would have been enough for me without all the Norse mythology or whatever built into the story. The internal worlds and interactions between Saku, Futami and Konome were the highlights of the game for me, and I enjoyed even the small stuff like plot/character-relevant events happening during h-scenes instead of them just being there.

I still haven't finished reading the epilogue or the omake scenario, and after that I'll maybe take a look at the extra PS2 content to see if there's any more of best girl Konome, even if it's not by the original author. I'll read Asairo next since that apparently seems to be regarded as even better than Itsusora.

The combination of detailed character writing, mystery and ridiculous chuuni moments was great. Unfortunately San's route was very rushed and I'm sure they wanted to do an actual true route or true ending instead of that low effort epilogue.
The PS2 version has some nice and very needed extra CGs. I wish there was a patch for the PC version.
Asairo is more consistent and you'll probably like it if you liked the Itsusora common route, although the middle part was a bit boring for me.

So in Waga Hime's 3rd route, the evil conspiracy unleashes Wolna Dillon as their final move to plunge the continent into chaos.

Is any good reason given why they don't do this on the first and second route? On the second route, there's a scene where the two conspiracy leaders are talking and one goes 'Should I unleash that thing?' and the other goes 'Nah, don't bother, it won't do much now.', even though as the 3rd route shows, it absolutely would have done a lot, since Wolna Dillon took literally the entire continent working together to stop. They don't even attempt to say why it wouldn't happen on the first route.

Meikei's a weird vn for me, overall I think it was a disappointment past the common route and the ending plus general setting was pretty lame but it's also a vn that just left a strong impression on me. Kamimaho is even more flawed but likewise it stuck with me

That's definitely a part of it, I've read tons of stuff that had the same overall message so Meikei was just beating a dead horse at that point.
At least the atmosphere was very good and as I said early I really enjoyed the common route.

yea, my guess is that rukuru intended separate routes for her and mirai but merged the two at some point, with kohaku acting out mirai's role. that coupled with rize's route being jumbled into common makes me think there were probably some adjustments to the initial plan.

by the way, are there any decent VNs story-wise in the last couple (2018-22) years? i haven't followed the industry but I got some time recently.
