No, this isn't a terribly rare experience with fumos in public. However, I find that the most presentable ones are Reimu and Youmu. Nice comments are more common with them than with others, at least in my experience.

They also have the neutral facial expression in common. They just look so fed up with everything, and maybe people relate.

I think most people just think, "oh, cute anime doll" and say they like it just based on that. It's not like it was 10-15 years ago, anime is very normie and mainstream nowadays. The same people that bullied us in high school for playing WoW and watching anime, now play Final Fantasy Online and think One Punch Man is the coolest show ever. Times have changed, and the fact is that it's not strange to see someone holding an anime doll nowadays.

Speaking of which, I took my Tei to a Japanese bunny moon festival in my city and I saw an old Japanese dude, maybe in his 50s, with a Ran fumo attached to his fanny pack. Funny enough, he didn't see me with Tei, but I saw him. It was the first time I ever saw another fumo carrier in real life. All the Japanese obaasans at the festival also LOVED Tei, I probably got 20 compliments or more for her that night.
