when i say straight forward, i don't mean intuitive. but after having it explained it's pretty easy to apply and understand. it's my 4th language i'm learning and despite being the most different one, grammar wise i'd rank it as probably the easiest or second easiest. if you have a lot of trouble it's probably either due to clinging onto your native language's way of speaking and thinking or maybe the explanations you were given just weren't easily comprehensible

I'm starting over, reviewing Heisig, reading a little easy NHK news and building back up. This time is gonna be different. One of the biggest obstacles I've found is looking for good input material. My Japanese comprehension is so poor, that whilst I can read a little, my listening is almost non existent making watching things like Japanese TV extremely tedious and disheartening.

Given how much I've enjoyed my time in Japan, I'm just trying to keep in mind that this is important to me. I just can't see to get past this beginners plateau. I know I'm lacking input, but it's frustrating that I can't find input that keeps me engaged. I'm considering watching the moomin series in Japanese, even if I only understand 1% of every episode, I'll just pick up new words.

Recently started Wanikani and a kanji having so many ways to be read is pretty overwhelming. How an I meant to keep track of the 4 or so different ways to read the likes of 人? I'm sure it'll come with time but it feels like such an antiquated language system. The system is so bad that furigana is commonly used. Is there any good way to learn why reading is to be used?

i only did 3 levels of wanikani before quitting it, its pacing is slow and tedious and the way it teaches readings is harder to remember than to just remember words. also it uses fake made up radicals for its mnemonics which i didn't like. it did help me at the start though so if you don't mind using it just keep going.

listen until you can hear all the words, even if you don't understand them
then listen more until you can understand the words you already know
you can switch between listening with subs and without to "wire" your brain into putting meanings on the words
then listen until you can strings the words together into comprehensive sentences
when you'll reach this point you'll be able to acquire more vocabulary by osmosis

When you're seeing a new word for the first time in Anki, or perhaps it's one you've just forgotten, what goes through your mind as you look at it and the meaning/reading? Do you simply quickly look at it, acknowledge, and move on? Do you say the reading out loud a few times to yourself? Do you deliberately try to link the meaning to the appearance of the kanji in some way, like 'ah, 中... well, the line is in the middle/inside' or what?

I'm new to this, just wondering if I'm doing it right. Forgetting a lot of words so far.

中, for example, is a single radical, since some radicals do have a meaning on their own

eventually you'll learn (without trying, your brain does it for you) to pick kanji apart with your eyes and words with new kanji will be way easier to learn than they used to be too

So for years, 漢字 has daunted me. I learned ひらかなとかたかな, and started learning 漢字but was always scared off and never took that extra step. Well, about two months ago I decided to crack down and started using WaniKani to learn, since it’s something I can do at work throughout the day (heh.) I’m Lv.4 rn and it really is nowhere near as bad as I thought it was, and is actually fun, especially challenging myself in my adult years. I still need to practice grammar and whatnot, so gonna do 元気 with bunpro I think. But I’m also thinking I’ll pick up RTK, since it really doesn’t seem that bad anymore.

So, i have been study Japanese some years now. I started back in 2019 after a trip to japan and i thought that next time i would go to japan i wanted some basic understanding of the language. I never really liked language learning because of my dyslexia. But the language hocked me up and now it is in my daily routine.

I found the JLPT some weeks after i started and i had 1 year to get to N5. But then Corona struck and the test was canceled. That puts me of and i thought "okay now i have one more year to solidify the basic". In 2021 the same thing and same thoughts "solidify the basic for the next year test" .

The year went on and i found more books that i wanted (all for beginners) and now in 2023 i realized i don't have to "solidify" more and im ready to go on with N4 materials. (Just have to finish all the books i brought because i love books) anyone else have this "problem" by the way? when you buy books that looks nice but never reading them

Yes, my road have been slow but i have enjoyed every minute of if and so should you! it is not a race to get first to N1

But today! i did read my first LVL 1 grader reader without any problem!

win for me!

>> No.42280865

This one is my favorite. Love seeing dumb roasties fail. This is a man's language. Y chromosome and penis required to become fluent.

I just received my JLPT N4 results, failed by 2 points. I am not so upset about the test specifically, but it has confirmed some things I have been thinking for a while.

I am 24 and living in Chicago, my dream has been to move to Japan since I was a about 11 years old. About 6 years ago I started seriously learning Japanese, took my first college class, even though I had already learned Hiragana and Katakana from a young age. I sailed through 2 years in college without doing much HW because it was all just so easy. I have a great memory for nouns. After getting out of school I realized that I had to start to learn how to study so I decided to start to study for the JLPT because it would be a goal every year that I could see my progress. I failed my first year N5, by 30 some points. I thought I was ready but I relied too much on class information and just didn't study enough. then I kinda got in a rut and although I studied some, I really didn't commit to Japanese for a while. I probably tried to do at least 15 minutes a day but I wasn't really working hard at it at all.

Flash forward a couple years and I had started to study again, passed the N5 and was feeling good about life. 2011 was me hitting my stride. I had finally learned how to study. I did Rosetta Stone, got the Japanese TV channel and watched as much as I could, downloaded dramas, got through the entire Basic Japanese Grammar book, tried to read children's books, got a lang-8 account and started writing journals at least once a week, started Anki, read Common Japanese Collocations, got the Tobira book and started it, picked up some manga, got a Japanese exchange student, started speaking only Japanese with my husband in public. I was pretty much AJATT. I am not going to say I did great at all these things, but I definitely tried. I think I tried everything because a lot of things didn't work too well for me. So I wasn't the best student, but I was doing Japanese at LEAST an hour a day.

So October 2011 rolls around and I decide I need to start studying for the JLPT N4. I did nothing but study for the JLPT so long, my brain actually hurt every day. I did practice tests, worked on grammar, bought a couple of listening books and studied specifically for that test for 2 straight months.

I just received my results, I failed. I only failed by 2 points, but it made me realize that I actually guessed on almost every question on the test. I could not understand the listening at all!

So here I am, I have put 6 years or more of my life into this language, I have worked my ass off, I even have definite plans to move to Japan April 2013 to join a language school with my husband for a year. We already have 1/3 of the money saved up. And I feel like maybe I am just too stupid to learn this language. I have tried so hard and I just keep failing. We just made friends with a Japanese couple and I can't understand anything they say, I am defaulting to my husband just to be able to converse with them. Plus its super hard to watch him pick up the language with ease and pass all the tests with flying colors.

So I guess I need some help. I am ready to just give up the language completely, but I have no idea what that will do to my life and my relationships (I have already told my whole family I am moving to Japan) Should I just give up? Is there anyway I could pull myself back up and continue with it when I have failed so may times before? I have poured so much blood sweat and tears into this language!! I am sorry for the long post but I really need some help! (Please don't respond with a がんばれ!or "you can do it!" that's really not what I need right now...

I don't think vocab density is the be-all-end-all judge of how difficult a particular work is supposed to be. Yotsuba, for example, is deceptively difficult compared to other SOL manga, particularly in the later volumes, even though it has a way more limited vocabulary. There are lots of sentences where I have no idea what they're trying to say and have to spend 5 minutes cross-referencing an English translation to make sense of how the sentence is supposed to work. This happens very rarely in other SOL manga by comparison. A lot of shounen manga is easier too, despite also having many more unknown words.

Being on DJT and studying Japanese is really starting to stress me out and I don't know what to do about it. I haven't studied Japanese for about 6 months now. Everytime I want to start I get stressed out: it's as if I'm choking.

I've studied Japanese for 2.5 years almost every day and today I found out I barely passed my JLPT N5 so I decided to pick up learning Japanese again. However when I read about others who passed their N5 after a couple of months of study it feels like I'm choking! I also have no idea what to study next which causes that choking feeling to become even stronger. Has anyone ever experienced the same thing? How do I stop this feeling? I want to study Japanese so bad but I have no idea where to start anymore... Should I just quit? Thinking about quiting also gives me this choking feeling but will that make it stop by not thinking about it anymore?

The cold-hard truth is that you need to live in Japan and integrate yourself in it's society to truly become fluent. I spent over a year studying Japanese in my home country. My ability was abysmal. After moving to Japan, getting a Japanese girlfriend and going to a language school - I passed the JLPT 2 in 9 months.
It's a good idea you're moving there. It's the only thing that will get to fluency. You are at a bit of a disadvantage as your husband isn't (I assume?) Japanese. You need to immerse yourself in ways that don't involve a short asian man thrusting his throbbing 4" meat stick into your happy hole.
Getting a customer facing job is one good way.
As far as passing the JLPT...you need to study A TON. I had like 2 hrs worth of homework a day at my language school.
