japan had the crazy, baseless idea that if given the chance, gaijin would fuck their women, pollute their language, censor the shit out of their porn, spend all their time complaining about inane shit, shill foreign religions; and generally, be a blight on their world and culture. at the same time they wanted guns for their internal wars over territory and who got to fuck the jks, thus, they made an artificial island, with strict rules that anyone that crosses the bridge into japan, from japan, or interact with gaijin without permission, gets sudokud on brutal difficulty. they were serious too, theres many stories of thots that went steal a look at the gaijins and got themselves and their families squidded. nips particularly hated puritans and a requirement to even interact with them was stepping of an effigy of mary, which they thought puritans would not do.
anyway long story short it worked great, japan had specialists in dealing with gaijin that spoke gajin language, and japan didn't become a colony of anyone... until the burgers sent a black steam ship fleet to make them open up, by force, and then made them mosaic everything after the 2nd 大戦争, leading to their extinction via lack of interest in sex
tldr: jks are ready and willing to meet, WAGMI!

its awkward to explain. in japanese the cake has characteristics independent of the speaker, it is delicious, appentizing, not appeticing, desirable, undesirable, whatever, in itself, and independent of the world around it
in english, those sorts of attibutes tend to belong to the actor involved "whomever wants the cake, finds it appetizing, whatever". in japanese, cake delicious is fine, in english its strange
but at any rate you need to consume more content, what i mean to convey will be obvious when you do

A warning about "Animecards" or "DJT" discord server.
This server is the most toxic hellhole I've ever seen in the Japanese learning community. I've never encountered so many socially depraved, insecure human beings in my life. These people treat Japanese learning as the "only thing that matters" and they are extremely egotistical. The majority of people in the server racist (akin to 4chan) and there's somehow still thousands of members. It's ridiculous how this server is allowed to continue to exist on discord. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Edit: they've attempted to discover my identity and are shittalking me within the discord, It's Insane!

this is typical, I'm doing 60 new ones a day because a lot of my current cards are reviews or 'easy' mined vocab that i already kind of knew but added to reinforce and solidify
so that 8s/card is not accurate because most of them i blitz through almost instantly while some significant minority I stop to look it up and repeat a few times in my head

probably i'll have to reduce it in the near future as reviews build up

>daily card count : time required to finish reps ratio
yeah that's a measure of complex reaction time (time required to recognize, recall and inhibit responding with items that are also recalled with the correct answer) and it's very well correlated with IQ. if you control for interest then it's also a measure of stamina (assuming you do your reps in one go). if you can rep faster and for longer then you probably have more efficient neural pathways

Day 0, memorizing Kana. I got Anki set up too though it appears silly for Kana. Question: What is a reasonable amount of time per day to dedicate to learning Japanese? Is 1.5-2 hours per day practice + then some immersion (once I teach myself Kana + some basic Kanji + grammar) enough for a serious attempt if I keep at that every day? End goal is to read/write and eventually speak Japanese. Is that at or below a 'moderate pace' to learn or am I underestimating this endeavor?

I am stuck on some kind of learning plateau where I can read manga without a dictionary at a comfortable pace however I think I am only translating what I read without truly understanding Japanese. For example if I just read something and understood it, I could only explain it to you in English. If you asked me literally quote something word for word from memory I probably couldn't do it.
idk I can't really explain how it feels to me but I am definitely lacking something

if your'e doing tons of new cards per day why not
if not start listening and reading
use jisho.org to find kanji you can't read
waiting to finish core2k before starting your minign deck is probably fine, you're going to end up learning tons of super common words once you start immersing, if yous tart mining immediately you'll make a bunch of useless cards (useless in the sense that you dont' need to review those words cause you review them constantly without even trying to cause you can't go 10 minutes of immersion without encountering them)
personally is tarted mining a couple weeks after I downloaded my core deck, but i already had a small vocab from being a duolingo retard and using google translate to read random doujins and stuff so it's different

even if you don't know french you can easily guess what it means from context
the chef is obviously in the middle of a conversation and is answering a question, why would he say fucking bonjour (which if you knew the rules about katakanization shouldn't even cross your mind)?
the fact that he's saying まちろん just after an obvious foreign word should give you a hint that this is the definition of said word

I do, and most languages don't have an equivalent of how "up" is used in the English sentence, so yes, "to polish a man" would make sense.
Still, you're right. As in the image, there is an article explaining the difference of "男を上げる" and "男を磨く". "男を磨く" refers specifically to getting more attractive.
>hint: it doesn't mean to up your 男性力 lol
Getting physically stronger could very well fit into "man up". Although I know that's not the point.

You’re kidding. Where? I know a lot of rare shit, but have never seen a kunyomi attached to that kanji. Perfectly logical, but seriously, where’d you encounter that?

I did Google it, in quotes, and found little of any importance, only highly obscure works.

Again, if the book in which you encountered this use caught your attention, it must be of greatly value than whatever crap shows up in a Google search. Please name the book, and help me out here. Also, please tell me how you came to find the book. Learning new sources for books is always useful.

I see.

Well, I knew 貿’s meaning of “seek”, “trade”, so deriving the reading of 貿い could only result in あきない.

Kinda funny how a kanji with basically one use got included in 常用.

If it interests you, you can actually read the content of the meetings for the last revision of the 常用漢字. Don’t have the link handy, but there was some fun stuff in there in the debate between the prescriptivists and the descriptivists about whether or not to include 俺.

there are books which are arent so obscure you cant find them on the internet but obscure enough that they only have one shit scanned copy that cant be ocr searched by search engines
also a lot of not so rare books can be found on google books but arent hosted on indexable pages on other websites so stuff that appears in sections that are paywalled on google books wont show up anywhere on google

Absolutely good advice, read, read, and read some more, and if you’re looking for Kanken1 stuff, focus on early Meiji-era works, especially essays and war diaries. 明六雑誌 is awesome for the former. They’re kind out of print, but you can find them for about 1500円. Extremely interesting stuff, too.

The thing about Kanken is not so much reading, (like 藐視 versus 藐然; very different readings for 藐), but production, being able to distinguish between say, a dozen different Chinese adverbs which have all collapsed into ショウショウ, is the brute. Holy shit, those adverbs kicked my ass.

Huh, neat. I only use Anki I with a few manually-constructed custom decks, and then mostly just as a way of organising information, but that sounds like something I wish I’d encountered a few years ago.
