I've been living and working in Japan (Niigata) for this past 9 months now and somehow got acquainted with my Japanese co workers. Were chatting on a daily basis and eat lunch together. Then the other day when I was discussing with them about plans this coming holiday (one of them was planning to go to Tokyo) I mentioned that I went to a maid cafe in Akihabara last August and they were kinda creeped out by it saying "Ehhh kimo!" and "nani o kangaeterunda?! >core decks are the most efficient way to learn words
only in the beginning for the most common words
after the first 2-3k the words you'll encounter will start leaning heavily towards being specific to the material the list was created from - in the case of core 6k that would be newspapers from the 90s
so you'll start to enounter a lot of words you will only rarely see used in actual media you're consuming, making their acquisition very difficult
so you just end up cramming words you have no real context for and core6k ends up being highly inefficient compared to just mining yourself

nobody is saying to put a paragraph, a sentence or even a chunk in combitnation with a picture or audio for you to recall the situation in which you encountered the word is enough but that only works if you have also actually consumed the piece of media it is from

>"relevance" isn't real in the sense that it doesn't affect retention, people unconsciously pick up things from things they find boring just as well

In my experience, maid cafes are only for people that are quite desperate and don't really see the issue.
seeing 40 something guys paying for a 16yr old to sit at their table while they drink whiskey is fukked up.
also, it was cringy as shit lol. i went just to say "i did it lol"
The worst was AKB48's cafe, my mom wanted to go too.
i remember she saying "this in our homecountry would be considered pedophilic"

maybe if you only consume stuff that's a little too hard for you so you're constantly bombarded with new words and old words don't get the chance to sink in
once you get to a level where relatively easy content exists, I think it's a good idea to alternate between stuff where you know almost every word and harder stuff. every time you experience known words, the ones you know but haven't quite sunk in to unforgettable level get more and more reinforced

not crazy actually, you can start with the subtitled kirinuki channels, there's stuff like subaru's zatsudans where she displays the topic in English before talking about it and all other tricks like watching games youve played in english for making input comprehensible in the beginner stage
you can watch them play text dense games where they read aloud, etc
very easy to find appropriate content for you (if you like vtubers in the first place)

as for me, whitenoising korone>watame>okayu>korone>subaru>koyori/lamy/chloe>polka/marine/miko/ui>now
its about volume, vbijin speak endlessly and you can listen while doing other things, the volume you listen is ten times that of anime and vns, and the word density is much higher
my reading greatly lags, but i feel as if i understand most things i hear confortably now, also lots of music, and that's improved my reading too
ive also read a ton, played a few games, and generally greatly enjoyed myself
if im awake and im not eating, having sex or doing something else im doing japanese
i also look up absolutely everything i see or anyone posts, and never missed my reps despite illness or fatigue
im not at the level id impress anyone, but im really happy for having been doing this for a bit over a year
most importantly, its self sustaining, i cant even conceive of quitting because this is simply what i enjoy doing, and i feel the growth daily

i thought it kind of cheapened the whole plot up until that point. how much more is there to the manga? i dont see how there could be more games or w/e after the ending, but maybe there are more games in between what we saw in the TV version?
also didnt like how they just glossed over the king of hearts game, that was the one i was the most interested in seeing! but from the little clips they showed it seemed pretty lame, didnt even see how it could be a heart game.

listening is also harder to want to do as a beginner because you have to white noise until you are used to the language enough to hear the words. and if you don't listen your reading will produce unnatural sounds in your head further hampering your ability to hear the language.
what really helped me enjoy listening as a beginner was stuff I already knew in English or had lots of context for, so I could tell what was going on even with shit listening comprehension. like listening to let's plays of games i know like the back of my hand, for example.
