Which deck should I use as a beginner? Yeah, I know, this is a very original and interesting question. Basically narrowed it down to Tango, Core 2.3k, and JP1K. The older core decks seem to be based on worse/older sources.

Kanji deck makes a lot of sense if it's production (RTK). If it's recognition or some other kind of kanji deck you got from a mainstream source, you don't need it. You learn kanji recognition in context when learning words. A grammar deck is also fine to speed up internalizing the most common patterns.

There was a scene where a character said “you’re kind of weird” which that sentence just so happened to be part of a lesson that I had today in Jlab’s anki deck. In the show she said “へんあへと” (I think that’s correct) and I recognized it and was like oh hey I know that, it means this person is weird, or in context, you’re weird. Just kind of a cool thing that happened today.

I've done both the tango decks and the core 2.3k deck (don't ask why) and I can say the core 2.3k is way better. Word cards are much faster and more efficient than sentence cards and the word selection is a lot better, teaching you the most common words from vinnies, linnies and anime, as opposed to shit like 時刻表 and a bunch of katakana words in the tango decks.

You did not read these books my dude, sorry to say. No one would call this 'reading'. And your goal based mindset is dangerous, while you claim to 'love effeciency' you are doing things in probably the most obtuse way possible.

To say 'well fuck traditional learning I just wanna read my anime shit' really shows you lack the respect for actually learning this. When you say you just want to learn 'specialty words' for reading you're assuming that that's all you need, that after Genki you have mastered the fundementals of Japanese, when in fact, you can pass N1 and still not be on that level. Of course you 'can' read a book at a below N5 level. You can also do that for damn near any language if you bust out an e-dictionary and take it a literal sentence at a time like you seem to be doing. It isn't impressive and there's reasearch backing that working like this hinders your reading ability more than it helps, as you're doing nothing but building your co-dependence on translation instead of naturally understanding the language.

This comment is really for people reading this post and not OP. Don't do this. Just don't. Study traditionally, move your way up the JLPT rungs and try to read at your level. There's nothing wrong starting with Pre-K picture books. Reading at your level, with minimal (meaning nearly no) outside help will skyrocket your reading speed, comprehension, and confidence. I understand your motivation might be reading sick anime books, but you have to realize what that means.

If you really want to speak this language properly, you have to give it respect when you learn it. You gotta knuckle down and learn SHIT tons of words you think you will never use (because if you stick with it long enough, they'll come up), you gotta learn the kanji and grammar forms that most Japanese people say 'we don't even use that'! (Which is a fucking lie everytime lmao). It isn't flashy but its a hell of a lot of a better method than this in the long run.

I'm technically ESL. I learned english from ages 9-15 in a very similar similar way I am now: reading and watching stuff. Main difference was, I also played a ton of online games, and had to communicate with a ton of you gringos. When I finally did get to actually speaking, I had no trouble at all forming sentences.

So that's the secret. Find a way to get high-volume text communication with japs. Japanese pronunciation is pretty easy all things considered so as long as you can form sentences you'll be fine.
