You clearly don't understand what RTK is designed for. It won't teach you individual meanings of kanji. It will only teach you (burn in, really) the character themselves, without any meaning stack to them. The keywords and stories are there just to help you remember the character, they are not supposed to stick in your brain and represent any meaningful information connected to the particular kanji. RTK will give you a firm grasp over a character. Then you can start learning it's readings in a whatever way you prefer. Also, it will teach you the stroke orders, which is actually very fucking important because of the dictionaries with handwriting recognition.

I tried to do without it but then, when reading manga, I would, with great effort, learn a new word only to forget it 5 minutes later because those fucking alien scribles just wouldn't stick in my brain. 2 kanji an hour is insanely inefficient. Get RTK and go through them systematically. You should be able to do 10 an hour at least. Use Koohii and its app for your spaced repetition needs. You're not a kid anymore so rote memorisation won't be as effective. Use your wizened adult brain to create mnemonics, stories and images stick in your brain in a way that scribbles just won't.
Yeah you won't learn any vocab or pronunciation, but first priority is getting those kanji into your head in an efficient way.

I'm around N2 level, and I think I agree with this. Frontloading the grammar first through books and flash cards will save you a lot of time trying to learn stuff. Memorizing like a thousand-odd grammar concepts made things a lot easier to understand, functionally. I'm gonna plug tackling kanji as a first step, though (which can be done together with grammar)

I think learning to write/read kanji through something systematic like RTK and using the AJATT method to immerse and save sentences is pretty great too, as a first step, but the "japanese people don't even know how to write kanji" meme has people rallying against learning kanji in lieu of words. It's been extremely useful for me and acquiring words with minimal effort now that I can write 2100 kanji or so, and in a few months of RTK, I got much more kanji knowledge than in the years spent learning words.

You're a retard because you start off your argument implying one cannot use any other tools while doing RTK, just the book, which is not how one should be doing RTK.

So basically according to you, simply because KD or KKLC have more or less everything already built in they're strictly better than RTK; in other words, they take up one Firefox tab instead of 3 or so. That's backward thinking and if you can't understand why you should abstain from trying to teach others.

So I thought I'd give RTK a try to learn Japanese. Boy was I wrong!

I've been trying to learn Japanese for months now, and I'm not even close to being able to form a sentence. I feel like I'm stuck in an infinite loop of kanji and vocabulary that I just can't seem to remember.

At this point I'm starting to think that maybe I'm just not cut out for learning Japanese. I just can't seem to wrap my head around the characters. I mean, I can recognize some of them, but I can never seem to remember them.

I've tried studying with flashcards, reading manga, and even watching anime, but I'm just not getting it. I'm starting to think that the only way I'm ever going to be able to learn Japanese is if I move to Japan and actually live there.

I'm starting to get pretty frustrated with the whole thing. I mean, I thought this was supposed to be fun, but it's just been one big headache so far. I don't know what else I can do. Does anyone have any advice for me?

WaniKani is unironically better than all of these for learning the kanji (ignoring handwriting). On top of teaching you the most common meanings and both on'yomi and kun'yomi readings, you also get further practice by exclusively learning vocab that incorporates what you know.

Are you straight up using just some deck like 2k/6k? Eventually you're going to start getting more fucked up because you never developed a decent memorization of the individual kanji in order to know when words use exceptional readings. Using WaniKani was the best decision I made, and I managed to get better at reading from 1 year of kanji study there than with any Anki deck. Not saying Anki is useless, but there are a lot of flaws with it's often recommended.

Honestly the best thing I've used is WaniKani. I know /jp/ and /int/ autistically hate the idea of paying for something they think they can get the equivalent of for free through something like Anki, but the system works. I started with Anki 2k/6k as my main tool, and I'm about two-thirds through the deck with pretty good retention, but I've switched to WaniKani as my main tool and Anki as my supplement. That's not to say that it's perfect, but I'll be finished with the 2k kanji and whatever thousand kanji they have in just a year. The order of the kanji presented and vocabulary make more sense and hammer in retention way better than the order of the 2k/6k deck by miles. With the discounted code, I pay like 7 dollars a month. So with just a little over 80 dollars and some dedication, I'll have the 2k kanji under my belt with solid retention, which honestly is nothing in the grand scheme of thing. If I could do it all over, I would have started with WaniKani first and used Anki as the supplement way earier.

>because I keep encountering these roadblocks and I won't proceed until I find the answer.
that's exactly what you're not supposed to do
a lot of things will go over your head at your current level and there's just no way for you to comprehend them right now - try to figure it out for a few minutes but if you can't that's fine, just move on
whatever it was, you'll encounter it again once you know a little more japanese and have a better shot at getting it

your comprehension of japanese improves every time you succesfully comprehend something so it's crucial that you get through more things you actually have a chance of understanding rather than spending 30 minutes on a single sentence that's impossible for you to figure out with your current skills

thing is, language is arbitrary and the english explanations don't entirely cover the meaning. nuance, and cases where something may or may not be used. a lot of it is just "someone said it this way 899 years ago, it became a meme, and its that way today"
you need more input rather than more grammar explanations because eventually youll recognize "x is used in this way", and when you try to use "y" instead, itll feel wrong.
you cant skip the journey by reading about grammar in english, NOR can you theorycraft why something "should" be right.

the real issue with wanikani, for me anyway, was time
it throttles you down every step of the way
japanese is way too big a journey to go at their rate
wanikani has 2k kanji, 6k words, and 368 days of content if you get everything right.
that also means that at most it makes sense to pay for 2 years of it, at the most, as the content in it will have run out by then, unless you aren't doing it anymore, in which case you probably shouldn't be paying for it anyway
im the most retarded person here and i did well over 6k words in my first year
i guess its unfair to compare wanikani with a holistic approach, but that holistic approach has cost 0 and delivered superior results (i think, anyway)

dedicated last half of the year on learning japanese and still feel like i barely learned anything even if my metrics show i acquired 7k vocab
people list "easy" ノベルゲーム but they still have a lot of words i need to bring out a dictionary for. never feels like i can just "enjoy" something. making lovers is supposed to be really easy slice of life but the opening section alone drained me.
things i push myself to read that align closer to my core interests take a lot of effort and unless i continually re-read the passages every so often then i forget the readings anyway. SRS only helps so much and i still have thousands of new words in the queue.
feel like i've regressed in listening also. chuubas are cute but i can't find myself interested in their content most of the time and the 雑談 of the funniest livers are out of my reach. it also kind of sucks they don't stream at good times for me.
was hoping i'd make it farther than this since i need to start focusing on other pursuits again.

youve spent the majority of your life playing catch up.
can’t you feel it?
always one step behind, always a little bit too late.
if only I knew about sentence cards a little earlier.
if only I listened to /djt/
constantly behind those who are braver than you.
you are working so hard, sprinting… and those ahead of you just glide to first place.
all that effort to stay a loser.
the reason people beat you is because they TAKE action. They MOVE.
it's dec 26th, the beginning of the laziest week of every year.
dec 26th - jan 1st is when MOST people ACHIEVE NOTHING.
it's why most people are losers,
they fail to understand the significance of this week.
this week is your UNFAIR ADVANTAGE.
this is the first time in your life when you can stop being behind, stop playing catch-up, and actually GET AHEAD.
2023 can be the year when you are ahead of the game, instead of behind it.
it’s amazing how easy it is to win a race when you’re allowed to go first.
you can jog, while your competition sprints. Saving your energy to win first place time and time again.
a reporter once asked Mike Tyson why he went running at 4 am and he said…
because I know my opponent is asleep.
this week. ALL OF YOUR COMPETITION IS ASLEEP.
are you man enough to take advantage of your head start?

If you can't understand the language that you see and hear then you will not be able to compose sentences at all. I understated this: writing kanji in isolation is not a weird skill, it's a useless skill. One that you will have to learn again anyway after you learn how to read.

It's a false dichotomy because if you do RTK you're obviously still going to learn to read as well. Also, your post is retarded on multiple levels. You're conflating producing kanji from memory (a basic skill that every adult has, this is what RTK teaches you) with writing. While it will allow you to write, which is a basic requirement for literacy, it has other applications as well as explained in >>42183548. In short, you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. Also

If you can't produce kanji from memory your comprehension of spoken Japanese is lower as explained in >>42183548. Also, even if you're a dirty NEET who doesn't mind not ever attaining full literacy, RTK still helps by indirectly speeding up vocab acquisition. And lastly, you can transition it into a Japanese production deck for free when most of the cards are mature (by replacing Heisig keywords with Japanese keywords that only have one possible correct answer such as 礼ハイ), which keeps the reviews relevant even for someone who finished RTK a while ago and has already been reading.

no, his argument is circular, and terrible, and the sample of one he offers is ridiculous not only on its insufficiency, but it prima facia falls apart as its merely "trust me bro" stupidity.
fact: most people think kanji is the hard part of japanese, theres millions and millions of sites saying that, and wanikani, rtk, and the whole flashcard industry flow from 1 assumption people who do not know anything make: "if i could read the kanji, i could learn japanese, just as i learned <insert language here>.
now everyone here knows that that is ludicrous, what makes japanese hard is that its a heavenly language passed down by amaterasu; and which is completely unlike any other language on earth. hand someone a sheet of romaji and theyll be no less lost than if you handed them a sheet of cunnyform runes.
No, the way you learn japanese is by immersing it it enough that your mind gets in synch with that of the kami, namely, amaterasu. ways to do that are myriad: the moans of her daughters, asmr, movies, anime, vbijin, whatever.
in other words, rtk is merely procrastination that doesn't do anything but delay the real, unavoidable, and time consuming hurdle of submerging your head in japanese until it fills your lungs, repeatedly, in hopes some of it sticks.

TLDR: if anything, vchads, anime chads, asmr chads, drama chads, music chads, and any other spoken media chads, have a head advantage.

I’ve been coming here on and off even since the /a/ days, and we’re still having flamewars about RTK...

Lemme just see if there is room in this particular wasps’ nest for my dick too:

RTK, generally speaking, is an efficient way of preparing for upper-level proficiency *if* you stick with it through the first two volumes (the third is superfluous), and if you are able to accept that it will not provide immediate benefit, but greatly aid vocabulary acquisition over the long-term.

As with many methods, it isn’t for everyone. If you just wish to become able to consume Jap media, it probably isn’t worth your time, and even as someone who obviously believes it has great utility, it isn’t perfect, and there are several things I’d change before recommending it to a learner.

Some of his keywords are less than ideal, and in some cases misleading. It’s been way too long to provide a particular example, but as I learned more and more, that issue became obvious.

There are some other, less important things like his choices of exemplary compounds and the organisation of the second volume as well.
