Does anyone have books by みかづき紅月 or 三上 ミカ? I'm looking specifically for the Oyasumi series. It includes "僕のために眠る妹", "

Can ば be something other than a conditional?
I've been googling and the only thing I found is the "もーばーも" construction (not only X but also Y).
But, here's my sentence. The bad guy is giving a speech and then the MC says:
>さっきから聞いてりゃあ、勝手なことをベラベラと……
Logically, it should mean something like "I've been listening for some time and you're just saying whatever you want..." but how does that りゃあ fit into this?

yeah you just have to keep at it every day, maybe rotate content until you find something easy enough
you slowly understand more and more and more and more, but you have to do it every day and its not an instant thing, i didn't feel like i understood most anything until 6 months in or so
but once you get that spark, bro the world changes! if you speak more than 1 language you know what i mean, the ability to think in a different language, even simple thoughts, to remember a different language, to perceive it as normal... everything is different before and after
there is a qualitative difference, much like riding a bike its hard to explain
doesn't mean i know or can read every word there is, by far, or that im always right or get all the nuance or phrase or whatever, but ill get there

If someone is taking 1000 hours to get through RTK, he’s doing it wrong.

I don’t get all the hate for the method. It needs some improvements, but the basic idea of divorcing the shape/meaning from the multiple readings works well.

The kanji are used to write words. The readings _are_ the meanings. RTK just adds another English reading to each. The value there is dubious.

On the other hand, building from simpler forms and inventing mnemonic stories therefrom is an inspired way to learn how to write. I suspect it doesn't help much for learning how to read, which is definitely the more important skill.

> The readings _are_ the meanings
That’s true, but because of the hundreds and hundreds of perfect homonyms amongst the onyomi, fixing a native-tongue keyword to a character greatly helps in keeping them straight at first.

Ex: ショウ doesn’t mean “victory”, but 勝 does, and keeping that ショウ differentiated from the other dozen or so jouyou kanji also read as ショウ is immensely aided by having that keyword.

The major thing I’d change about RTK is the “stories”. Maybe complex visuals work for some, but for me, a simple phrase combining the keywords was plenty, and far faster.

i don't think that's an issue, i don't think i've ever mixed up two kanji because they had the same on-yomi, ever

I can't remember any other incidents.
the homophone problem is mostly theorycrafting, I suspect

It isn’t so much a matter of mixing up kanji, but the keyword creates very easily a single, unique anchor upon which to fix additional readings. It allows one to easily absorb passively new words and compounds, just by seeing them.

In any case, RTK is just training for beginners, until one gets a good basis for further learning. I don’t even remember most of my keywords anymore; they just fade away when they’re no longer needed, often leaving behind a kind of general concept that might not even be possible to summarise in a single word.

sorry for the blogpost, none of this matters anyway since jlab is better than both and I'm still learning 0.0002% of the language either way

jlab is a deck that uses anime and dorama examples for vocab and grammar, and loosely follows the tae kim book. It has a LOT of redundant cards, and only teaches like 1k words, but at least none of them (so far) teach obscure useless vocab that I don't even use in my native lang, and it's the only deck I've used that actually helps for grammar review instead of giving me a bunch of info dumps

>> No.42173610

>>42173567
oh cool
im not sure decks can teach anything at all, most people (me included, also the guy who made anki), think they are for holding memories you already have or reminding you of things you learned elsewhere to strenghten those memories
if we go by that then any deck that pretends to teach something, is wrong, and the real way to go, is mining things (this is, making your own cards from things you learned elsewhere, while immersing, or whatever)
just a thought, most of the people who ever even mention decks here are the people that made said decks, too...
anyway good luck bro

>most of the people who ever even mention decks here are the people that made said decks, too
yeah sorry didn't mean to sound like a shill, I know this general gets them a lot.
I thought you needed some sort of basic vocab "base" like 2.3k words to get into mining. Do you reckon I could just start immersing and mining now? I've been considering trying to watch something like crayon shin chan with jp subtitles, trying to pick up as much as I can. I tried NHK easy news but found it too hard for my level (and kinda boring)

yeah, you can just mine from the start, you dont need 2.3k words, or really any to do so
here, http://hukumusume.com/douwa/ great site with childrens stories with audio, they use simple words and not too many kanji, theres english translations too (英語 button), but try to do without. if thats too hard, you can try graded readers at the tadoku site, also have translations and english

That reminds me of something. Watching some vbijin, I notice that vocab deficiency in their native language seems a lot more common among japanese speakers than english. Most of them drop tons of words when they play Sekiro or that or any game with slightly harder language, to a point I don't notice in english streamers.

I guess I always assumed native languages were basically 'equivalent' in this kind of thing. Have you guys noticed anything like what I'm talking about? Am I hallucinating?

Hey /jp/ I recall a term about a girl that was treated differently in a male centric hobby/club, and it was called anime club princess? Is that right? Do I misremember whats it called?

Yes. You'll get to a point where you can listen raw faster if you improve your overall ability especially vocab. When you're in the white noise phase the most important thing is to actually have the words so you can hear them, subs will allow you to notice words you haven't acquired yet.

So. My Japanese level is about an N3. I have a Bachelor's in Japanese and Japanese culture but I'm not confident in my Japanese abilities at all. I decided to keep studying it (currently doing a master's degree in the same thing) for a chance of spending a semester in Japan, which is happening in 3 months. Now, the last time I seriously studied Japanese was about 2 years ago. Ever since I started my Master's my confidence has gone terribly down and I have done all exams but the Japanese language ones.

Having previously studied all the core grammar and currently studying N2 and N1 grammar (unfortunately I'm trying to at least pass one language exam before going to Japan... as you can see... not much motivation here) how much is my Japanese going to realistically improve if I spend 5 months there studying it? I'll be in a university, and living in the university dorm. All the other courses are in English, while Japanese is in... Japanese.

I learned English basically by myself after I studied the core grammar by watching youtube videos, writing and reading english books and streaming. I can speak it so well I prefer it over my first language, so I shouldn't have too much of a hard time learning Japanese. But I'm lacking so much confidence and I'm so scared of travelling and living in a foreign country alone... sigh

are people really this fucking stupid? Wtf
