She speaks English too (kinda), so sometimes in chat people come in to message in English with her and she asks questions about vocab or grammar or tries to explain Japanese to her English fans. i get along really well with this italian and indian guy at work and they dont even speak english
but i can understand really well what they says because and because of their voice's intonation and gestures they makes (the italian guy is specially good at this)
the only reason im learning japanese is because japanese people suck at making gestures and theyre too meek to make themselves understood so your only hope of ever getting some jap pussy is being a gigachad or learning their stupid language

Japs aren't interested in learning English. That's why they suck at it. The Chinese and Koreans are much better at english, even though it's just as difficult to learn, because they actually have the drive to learn the language. The average Japanese person has no reason to learn another language, for either business or leisure. They are basically the America of asia and have a completely self-sufficient cultural economy.

And it’s far more than just a couple of dictionaries. Everything from that to thesauruses, pronunciation guide, encyclopedia, contents on history, science, geography, haiku, Classical Japanese, you name it. Literally a couple hundred resources, and you can search all of them in a second.

Starting from the fact that I've always thought I was pretty decent at japanese, started learning 3 years ago, may of 2019, passed the N2 last year summer of 2021 with a very good 164/180 score, thought I could probably ace the N1 pretty easily the last months. Until today.

I tried to read a Visual Novel (fate stay night) which I was really intereated in and it opened my eyes, where to start. I literally couldn't understand half of what I was "reading", or trying to read, holy shit, I google translated 2/3 sentences because of weird grammar and stupie sentence structure, and oh my god, so many new kanji and words as well, I thought I had mastered them and that I was almost done with it, but no, in about an hour, before I gave up, I mined more than 100 words and like a third of them had kanji I had never seen, like, yeah, I still find new kanji sometimes but not dozens of them like that, what the fuck. I know about 2000 kanji I'd say at this point but after checking the internet apparently around ~3000 is the amount the average educated japanese person knows. Holy shit. No no no no no. And they are complicated as fuck.

This experience opened a new world to me. There's so many layers of japanese. I spent time with anime, manga, some easier light novels, could read some news and social media posts and was just overall enjoying myself until I realized how far actual native level fluency still was. I never understood everything 100% of course, don't get me wrong, but it felt like I wasn't struggling too much. I don't know what to think. People told me that I probably wasn't as good as I thought I was. Do I really know anything even. In reality I can't even watch or read most shonen and seinen like Hunter X Hunter, Berserk, One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen etc. yet without looking up sentences or a couple of words per episode/chapter. I mostly enjoy fighting series but they're so damn hard with philosophy and attacks and tactics and yoji and proverbs and super casual terms and shit. I thought I was still decent because I could get the gist of them but welp, I was just lying to myself.

Are ~10-15 hours a week, 1~3 hours daily of immersing and anki really not enough. I've done that for literally years already, how many more to go to be able to enjoy everything I want in japanese without it feeling like a pain. They told me that anything below 4~5h hours was barely anything if I wanted to reach native fluency, a kid learns a language through constant input throughout the day for like 7-8 years before reaching actual fluency but like, I'm not 3 year old, it should be easier for an adult, right? 5h+ a day is fucking crazy, is that what it really takes to learn a completely different foriegn language? Because we're basically starting from 0, like a newborn, so I guess what they told me was true. The only completely fluent foreigners I know are Matt vs Japan and Dogen, who've spent literally half of their lives learning it without breaks, is THAT what it takes? I guess many would be happy with my level but I want to understand and enjoy everything I want like I do in english, THAT is my goal. I don't know, I just don't know what to say. I just want this LEARNING PART of my journey to end already.

>> No.42152111 [DELETED]

It's about nine years ago I started learning it for no particular reason; mostly because of a whim "I'm watching a lot of anime so why not try to make the time I spent watching anime useful by learning Japanese at the same time?"

I have now reached N1 level Japanese (which, as I discovered now, is still miles away from actual fluency) and the additional value it has provided to my life is approximately zero. I have no intention of ever moving to Japan, and I have a STEM degree that gives access to jobs that pay many times better than any job involving Japanese.

My enjoyment of Japanese media hasn't improved either. I am still missing about one word every five sentences when watching anime (well, I didn't count, but it feels like that much); if I wasn't trying to maintain my Japanese level, I would prefer just reading the subtitles. Light novels have about four unknown words per page and my reading speed is about half as fast as an average Japanese native. This situation doesn't seem to be improving anytime soon.

In fact, my interest in Japanese media has waned over time. The main reason I am still watching/reading Japanese stuff is a sunk cost fallacy "well, I spent over 4000 hours learning Japanese and it would be a shame to lose that effort due to language attrition." The books I am reading in Japanese right now aren't really boring, but if I wasn't learning Japanese I would probably not be reading their English translations either; if language wasn't a concern I would probably be reading some (English translations of) internationally famous novels instead of restricting myself to Japanese books only.

After having sunk so much time into a language it becomes really hard to just pull the trigger and forget it, even though I probably should.

Over the past nine years, there have been a grand total of three-ish untranslated Japanese works that I was glad I was able to read. All other Japanese works either have a translation available or are not more interesting than your average English work. This was totally not worth the time.

If I could give my younger self advice regarding learning Japanese, then it would be "Do not learn Japanese. It is not worth it."

I just received my JLPT N4 results, failed by 2 points. I am not so upset about the test specifically, but it has confirmed some things I have been thinking for a while.

I am 24 and living in Chicago, my dream has been to move to Japan since I was a about 11 years old. About 6 years ago I started seriously learning Japanese, took my first college class, even though I had already learned Hiragana and Katakana from a young age. I sailed through 2 years in college without doing much HW because it was all just so easy. I have a great memory for nouns. After getting out of school I realized that I had to start to learn how to study so I decided to start to study for the JLPT because it would be a goal every year that I could see my progress. I failed my first year N5, by 30 some points. I thought I was ready but I relied too much on class information and just didn't study enough. then I kinda got in a rut and although I studied some, I really didn't commit to Japanese for a while. I probably tried to do at least 15 minutes a day but I wasn't really working hard at it at all.

Flash forward a couple years and I had started to study again, passed the N5 and was feeling good about life. 2011 was me hitting my stride. I had finally learned how to study. I did Rosetta Stone, got the Japanese TV channel and watched as much as I could, downloaded dramas, got through the entire Basic Japanese Grammar book, tried to read children's books, got a lang-8 account and started writing journals at least once a week, started Anki, read Common Japanese Collocations, got the Tobira book and started it, picked up some manga, got a Japanese exchange student, started speaking only Japanese with my husband in public. I was pretty much AJATT. I am not going to say I did great at all these things, but I definitely tried. I think I tried everything because a lot of things didn't work too well for me. So I wasn't the best student, but I was doing Japanese at LEAST an hour a day.

So October 2011 rolls around and I decide I need to start studying for the JLPT N4. I did nothing but study for the JLPT so long, my brain actually hurt every day. I did practice tests, worked on grammar, bought a couple of listening books and studied specifically for that test for 2 straight months.

I just received my results, I failed. I only failed by 2 points, but it made me realize that I actually guessed on almost every question on the test. I could not understand the listening at all!

So here I am, I have put 6 years or more of my life into this language, I have worked my ass off, I even have definite plans to move to Japan April 2013 to join a language school with my husband for a year. We already have 1/3 of the money saved up. And I feel like maybe I am just too stupid to learn this language. I have tried so hard and I just keep failing. We just made friends with a Japanese couple and I can't understand anything they say, I am defaulting to my husband just to be able to converse with them. Plus its super hard to watch him pick up the language with ease and pass all the tests with flying colors.

So I guess I need some help. I am ready to just give up the language completely, but I have no idea what that will do to my life and my relationships (I have already told my whole family I am moving to Japan) Should I just give up? Is there anyway I could pull myself back up and continue with it when I have failed so may times before? I have poured so much blood sweat and tears into this language!! I am sorry for the long post but I really need some help! (Please don't respond with a がんばれ!or "you can do it!" that's really not what I need right now...

I’ve been studying for 8 months now. But I feel like i’m not even close to N5. I tried the NAT test N5 and failed. Then they made me study for N4 for some reason. And i’ve tried twice and failed. Im studying for 6-8 hrs a day. Im having a hard time memorizing grammars and vocab. I suck at listening and remembering Kanji too. I don’t know what to do anymore. I just want to cry lol.

I have an upcoming NAT N4 test again this month. I still have 3 days. I don’t know how to feel about it. Just thinking about it makes me cry. Any advice?

Edit: i dont use any apps or text books. i just wrote down the vocabs and search how to properly use grammars then memorize.

Honestly guys, although a lot of /jp/ers probably won't believe me, I'm gonna come out and say something that sounds kind of like I'm boasting about my power level:

I live in Japan, speak Japanese, play lots of eroge, go to lots of doujin events and sell my own stuff on occasion, all my IRL friends are a bunch of otaku who I met on 2ch, I buy lots of 2D porn, figures, team up with people to spend lots of money at comike, blahblahblah the whole nine yards. And I look whiter than this guy too.

But I never use my whiteness as a selling point. I don't consider myself special, I consider myself an average otaku, and most people I meet are kind of amazed at first to meet a white guy in this fandom, but after a little conversation they don't really treat me different than any other average nerd. Most people who know the stuff I've released in the doujin scene (not that I'm all that popular or anything mind you) do not even know that I'm not Japanese. I don't whore myself out as kind of some rarity. I'd like to think there are other people like me, but I'm starting to doubt it because I've been in the fandom over here for years now and I've never met another foreigner, only heard about dudes like this Danny Choo dude or that one dude who used to do shitty "learn English" videos on Nicodou. The only time I use English is on 4chan, and I always post as Anon.

What's so special about this Danny Choo dude? What does he do that I don't that makes him notable? I've never really heard anything about the guy other than what /jp/ says here, so maybe he's not really such a bad dude, but somehow I can't believe that he's not just a completely average otaku who happens to have money and happens to be foreign. Why does that make him at all special?

So as I was lurking today I figured it'd be a decent idea to type the name of an old acquaintance/friend/crush (I can't recall exactly, the years have taken their toll, twisting and distorting my mind with memories of fantasy which have become indistinguishable from the real past) into google, low and behold her facebook turns up as one of the links. On her public page, some of her friends also fell into the acquaintance/friend bracket, so I clicked on them, and like a interconnected web there were other acquaintances, including some girls (now women) I had crushes on, but all that isn't important.

Upon seeing all these people I had known, now living what appeared to be a normal and sociable life, the reality finally sunk in as to just how much of a pathetic outcast I had become. With this now invigorated feeling of rue burning in my breast, I quickly signed up for a facebook account so as to try and find more pictures/information about the lovely lady of whose name was typed into google. Unfortunately, the information displayed was the same whether signed in or out, so now I'm left with the prospect of trying to get onto her friend list.

I want to get on there without revealing my identity - although possible I'd be able to get on there being honest, it would be more as a freak show attraction than anything else. I was in her class several times during the time we were in school together, so I'm leaning towards impersonating an old friend of hers from when she was quite young, but being out of touch with what happened to everyone it's a proverbial minefield, with picking the wrong person spelling instant and total annihilation. Do you have any suggestions/tactics for getting on someone's friendlist, as I'm somewhat new to all this friend stuff?

Although she still lives in the same town as me (I checked using an online registration checker with the electoral commission), calling her up on the telephone or going out and bumping into her aren't an option - as I want to stay anonymous and if for whatever reason I went outside the house and saw her, I'm unsure if she'd be on the receiving end of a warm smile or a haymaker. Any suggestions are welcome.

A warning about "Animecards" or "DJT" discord server.
This server is the most toxic hellhole I've ever seen in the Japanese learning community. I've never encountered so many socially depraved, insecure human beings in my life. These people treat Japanese learning as the "only thing that matters" and they are extremely egotistical. The majority of people in the server racist (akin to 4chan) and there's somehow still thousands of members. It's ridiculous how this server is allowed to continue to exist on discord. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Flashcards are a popular study tool that can be used to help you memorize new information, such as vocabulary words or historical dates. Here are some tips for increasing the speed of your flashcards:

Use spaced repetition: Review your flashcards more frequently at first and then less frequently as time goes on. This helps you to commit the information to long-term memory.

Test yourself: Try to recall the information on a flashcard without looking at it. This helps you to see how well you have memorized the information and where you need to focus your efforts.

Use mnemonic devices: Mnemonic devices are techniques that help you to remember information by associating it with something else that is easier to remember. For example, you could create a story or acronym to help you remember a list of items.

Practice regularly: The more you practice using your flashcards, the faster you will become at recalling the information.

Use a timer: Set a timer and try to go through as many flashcards as you can in a certain amount of time. This can help you to improve your speed and focus.

From a culpability standpoint in regards to hosting, they're kind of required to treat it as fact even if they figure you're just LARPing.
They might not be legally required to take down illicit discussion that isn't actively a threat or a display of a federal law being broken or whatever, but very few hosting companies will tolerate it unless they pander specifically to it. The end game of that is either no longer running, not hosting it publicly (dark web/etc), or something like 8ch where they basically play whack-a-mole with providers until they find a provider willing to host.

It's a lot simpler than that - 4chan is very much WYSIWYG for everyone using it with everyone receiving the same, public threads. Combine that with lack of IDing beyond trips, the transient nature of all threads outside of archivers, etc. and you get a site which is much worse than Twitter, Facebook, etc. for organizing illegal activities.

4chan avoids most of the heat other platforms get by doing nothing and just keeping the site as-is.
