i am there for all intents and purposes at 3500 kanji. but its not like it really matters, there are still plenty of words i cant read because multiple combinations of onyomi/kunyomi sound fine, plenty of words i have looked up a million times that wont stick, plenty of new readings even. and of course the occasional kanken1 kanji that i havent seen pops up every few chapters.
it does feel good to be "done" with kanji though, now i dont have to think about them at all and i can just focus on words.

is correct that after about the first, most-common 3500 or so, it’s very, very rare to encounter new ones.

I know about 7000 unique characters (far more if you include trad forms and variants), and while I can remember the last completely-unfamiliar kanji I encountered (鍰, an old unit of currency in Chinese, but repurposed to mean “slag” (からみ) in Jap; saw it on some documentary), but before that? I literally can’t remember. It might have been some obscure plant name like 蕺 or something.

Once you know those 3500, unless you have some particular reason to do so, focusing on further kanji study is probably not the most efficient use of time.

That’s the big divider, time period. Older stuff was written by people who had received a traditional, Chinese-style education, and that showed up in the heavy, kanbun-style they produced. The post-war educational reforms and political shift away from China and toward the English-speaking West changed that.

when does the brainfog disappear when reading, even when i understand what i read or hear i have to constantly check with myself that i correctly understood it, i can't take the information at face value without straining my brain
it makes it hard to enjoy fully what i'm reading when it's something other than porn or romcom
when i try to not overthink about what i'm reading it feels like i'm half understanding things naturally and half whitenoising sometimes i feel like i don't know all the elements being said but i still somehow understand the information conveyed, sometimes i "know" all the words but i have no idea what the sentence means if i don't focus on it it's a weird feeling don't know if i should try to keep doing that or not

I mostly just read, and only use Anki for 四字熟語 since it’s a good way to keep them organized, as well as add useful additional information to them.

I also went through a phase in which I methodically studied kanji one-by-one, always trying, when possible, to learn at least it’s basic kunyomi and onyomi, as well as at least a few useful compounds for each. That was based on the Kanken 1 scope.

My reading is slow and comprehension minimal. Without dictionary and translator I am not able to understand what is being said. Feels more like I am studying sentences instead. Even one sentence is a problem, yes, I am that bad. I don't even know what you typed. I am trying to do what people recommend but it doesn't work for me.

I still remember 乳酸菌飲料, but I only know first last kanji.

Probably trolling but the average Jap knows about 3500. Only an extreme flashcard sperg would know double that.
Of course you still encounter an occasional unfamiliar kanji with 3500 when reading literature.
There are probably a few words on the first page of Moby Dick that you couldn't correctly define but you can still read it.

immersion is like a bukkake gokkun session.
you are surrounded by word penisses and the vocabulary semen is flying all around you. but you cant get it all in your mouth because its flying everywhere. so you just swallow/aquire what gets in your mouth while the rest coveres your body. but there is always more coming.

friendly reminder:
v美人 are the next best thing to a japanese mom:

-cute
-constant dialogue
-descriptive dialogue
-VERY language dense, they never shut up
-conversational cadence
-cant be mined if you are watching in real time, nor paused (so you have to pay attention and your brain is in do or die mode)
-if they are playing a game you already played (recent banjo kazooey streams with kone), you already have the english translation of everything in mind, but even if you haven't played the game, they describe everything they are doing.
-they activate the natural "want to understand what the cute girl is saying" part of the brain
-a lot of variety
-essentially always on

probably the next best thing to conversations with nips, but they have the added benefit that you do not have to carry the conversation or keep it alive, the vbijin does that herself. essentually you get a girl talking to you and describing everything for 1 to several hours.

v美人 are THE path to true fluency!

not saying you should give up, nor that you wont make it (you will if you want to), but i am saying that maybe your focus is wrong? the other anon is not wrong, you are trying to hold onto what you have, but, especially if you don't have that much time or drive, wouldn't making japanese your hobby and immersing in stuff you like be a better way?
it doesn't matter if you forget stuff you arent planning to use
and if you use it, you wont forget it
its hard to explain but you arent really trying to...the purpose of all of this is not to become an encyclopedia that can recite every word and kanji combination by memory
the purpose is to be able to play and read and listen to stuff you like, and have fun with it
whether its vbijin, anime, games, manga, erohon, whatever
tldr: you didn't start this to do anki did you? then why is anki all you seem to be doing?

that's a big problem
you need to embrace some more white noise and just get more quantity in the beginning stage
analyzing stuff and trying to figure out what it means is very helpful, but it shouldn't be taking up the bulk of your time. it's supplemental. you're not giving your unconscious mind enough data to extract patterns from and build a system with. most of language learning occurs in the unconscious mind, you help the unconscious mind to learn faster consciously withs tuff liek analyzing sentences, but you simply need more food to work with. confusing だけ and まだ is physiologically unthinkable and it's happening because your approach is simply wrong.
it's not because you can't understand, it's because when you bother with japanese your brain doesn't experience enough examples to detect the patterns (automatically, it does it for you)
it's like giving a jap a hundred sentences and asking 'hey, figure out what each of these mean' instead of giving him ten thousand and let him analyze the ones that stick out to him at his own pace. look at it from an outside perspective, imagine you're watching yourself.

i still don't know the difference. every time i read either of them i have to look it up

>look at it from an outside perspective, imagine you're watching yourself.
i'm at an N5 reading level after about 2 years of on and off.
my initial plan was to ankidrone core2k and then start reading but it took me a year to finish that and reading has mostly been me not comprehending shit and going down in difficulty
i can comfortably sort of read N4 tier graded readers and reading practice, but even that i struggle to really parse at all
native material, forget it. whenever i try i whitenoise and i end up guessing what it means off the 1 or 2 words i actually understand (usually incorrectly)

just read more and feel it out
you cant avoid every sentence taking a couple minutes as a beginner but 30 means youre trying to overanalyze everything
look up all the words necessary and take a guess from context at what is being said
every once in a while you might google something but for the most part you need to fuckin move on
expect it to be a little fuzzy and rely on context to help you out and after hundreds of hours youll be recognizing tons of common shit and be doing way less guessing
also stop reading boring shit like graded readers
its better to suffer more with something that actually motivates you and you understand less than to not have any motivation to understand the story or the dialogue

just got むらさきのスカートの女 the other day and had a question I was hoping someone could answer. the sentence in question is the following:
>むらさきのスカートの女がすごいと思うのは、周りの人間がどんな反応を示そうと、決して自分の歩みのペースを変えないことだ。
I think the speaker is saying that what makes them think that the purple-skirt woman is amazing is the fact that she doesn't change her walking pace no matter what sort of reaction people around her express. the only thing that feels a little weird is むらさきのスカートの女がすごいと思うのは. I know のは can be used to nominalize verb phrases, but I don't think I've seen it used like how it is in this sentence, specifically I mean with something like the phrase that comes after. does anyone disagree with my rough translation? is it just weird from an English perspective, or am I missing something?

yes that's pretty much it, you just have to read more and stop thinking about the grammar guide, it's just a crutch for the begging. It's not really helpful to look at のは and think "nominalizing verb phrase".

I think I get what you mean. when I try to read I don't really think that much about grammar consciously and try to recall all the technical jargon that I've read about, but when breaking it down and expressing how I understand it I think it can be useful. that way other people who understand it better can say "no it's actually this grammar" and point me in the right direction. then I can do more reading and hopefully forget about it (consciously at least)

It's about nine years ago I started learning it for no particular reason; mostly because of a whim "I'm watching a lot of anime so why not try to make the time I spent watching anime useful by learning Japanese at the same time?"

I have now reached N1 level Japanese (which, as I discovered now, is still miles away from actual fluency) and the additional value it has provided to my life is approximately zero. I have no intention of ever moving to Japan, and I have a STEM degree that gives access to jobs that pay many times better than any job involving Japanese.

My enjoyment of Japanese media hasn't improved either. I am still missing about one word every five sentences when watching anime (well, I didn't count, but it feels like that much); if I wasn't trying to maintain my Japanese level, I would prefer just reading the subtitles. Light novels have about four unknown words per page and my reading speed is about half as fast as an average Japanese native. This situation doesn't seem to be improving anytime soon.

In fact, my interest in Japanese media has waned over time. The main reason I am still watching/reading Japanese stuff is a sunk cost fallacy "well, I spent over 4000 hours learning Japanese and it would be a shame to lose that effort due to language attrition." The books I am reading in Japanese right now aren't really boring, but if I wasn't learning Japanese I would probably not be reading their English translations either; if language wasn't a concern I would probably be reading some (English translations of) internationally famous novels instead of restricting myself to Japanese books only.

After having sunk so much time into a language it becomes really hard to just pull the trigger and forget it, even though I probably should.

Over the past nine years, there have been a grand total of three-ish untranslated Japanese works that I was glad I was able to read. All other Japanese works either have a translation available or are not more interesting than your average English work. This was totally not worth the time.

If I could give my younger self advice regarding learning Japanese, then it would be "Do not learn Japanese. It is not worth it."

Starting from the fact that I've always thought I was pretty decent at japanese, started learning 3 years ago, may of 2019, passed the N2 last year summer of 2021 with a very good 164/180 score, thought I could probably ace the N1 pretty easily the last months. Until today.

I tried to read a Visual Novel (fate stay night) which I was really intereated in and it opened my eyes, where to start. I literally couldn't understand half of what I was "reading", or trying to read, holy shit, I google translated 2/3 sentences because of weird grammar and stupie sentence structure, and oh my god, so many new kanji and words as well, I thought I had mastered them and that I was almost done with it, but no, in about an hour, before I gave up, I mined more than 100 words and like a third of them had kanji I had never seen, like, yeah, I still find new kanji sometimes but not dozens of them like that, what the fuck. I know about 2000 kanji I'd say at this point but after checking the internet apparently around ~3000 is the amount the average educated japanese person knows. Holy shit. No no no no no. And they are complicated as fuck.

This experience opened a new world to me. There's so many layers of japanese. I spent time with anime, manga, some easier light novels, could read some news and social media posts and was just overall enjoying myself until I realized how far actual native level fluency still was. I never understood everything 100% of course, don't get me wrong, but it felt like I wasn't struggling too much. I don't know what to think. People told me that I probably wasn't as good as I thought I was. Do I really know anything even. In reality I can't even watch or read most shonen and seinen like Hunter X Hunter, Berserk, One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen etc. yet without looking up sentences or a couple of words per episode/chapter. I mostly enjoy fighting series but they're so damn hard with philosophy and attacks and tactics and yoji and proverbs and super casual terms and shit. I thought I was still decent because I could get the gist of them but welp, I was just lying to myself.

Are ~10-15 hours a week, 1~3 hours daily of immersing and anki really not enough. I've done that for literally years already, how many more to go to be able to enjoy everything I want in japanese without it feeling like a pain. They told me that anything below 4~5h hours was barely anything if I wanted to reach native fluency, a kid learns a language through constant input throughout the day for like 7-8 years before reaching actual fluency but like, I'm not 3 year old, it should be easier for an adult, right? 5h+ a day is fucking crazy, is that what it really takes to learn a completely different foriegn language? Because we're basically starting from 0, like a newborn, so I guess what they told me was true. The only completely fluent foreigners I know are Matt vs Japan and Dogen, who've spent literally half of their lives learning it without breaks, is THAT what it takes? I guess many would be happy with my level but I want to understand and enjoy everything I want like I do in english, THAT is my goal. I don't know, I just don't know what to say. I just want this LEARNING PART of my journey to end already.

I vaguely remember matto saying in a livestream or something that he still has noticeable gaps that came up in his immersion or when talking with nippongos. and with Dogen, you also have to consider he lives in Japan and has a Japanese wife. depending on what you want to watch, read, who you want to interact with in Japanese, it might be something you have to dedicate much of your time with on a daily basis.

if you come across an n+1 sentence that you still can't understand without looking up the unknown word then it's either not an n+1 sentence or you should stop relying on yomichan and start using your brain

>if there's any 'cutoff' it would be free time or IQ not age
it's not a cutoff for ability. it's a cutoff for if it even matters. life after 25 is a consolation prize. overwhelmingly in anything, younger people dominate
you're progressing as fast as an average person who started learning from like 16-24 except you have a -5 year penalty.

>>42130518
it's when your body and mind peaks and it declines from there.
and it's just a symptom. someone who takes longer than someone else has something wrong with them
would you rather be operated on by someone who failed med school twice or the one who just got it right the first time.

and for most things besides boomer copes like business and politics, there aren't many beginners over 30

you have to progress faster than average to keep up with even average people when you're a late starter
if you're slower than average (which is usually the case for old people) you're basically a dead man walking
your entire life after a certain point is just a constant game of catching up

if you only compare yourself to other late starters then you'll feel good but most people that progress like you aren't as old as us

>1/7 of their life at 35

the first 30 years of your life are more valuable than the last 30. the 10 years you live between 20-30 are worth ten times the 30 years that are lived between 50-80
and you cannot assume that the 20 and 30 year old are identical as well. the top performing late starters are usually on the level of an above average early starter

>cause i'm just doing it for the media
originally same, but now i also have this nagging feeling in the back of my head telling me i've failed at japanese every time i try to consume even subbed anime so i have to get rid of it
>cause I find the learning process itself extremely fun too
none of the media i wish to consume is enjoyable at my level

being a slow person means you have to live with failure every day of your life. japanese study at this point is painful for me because i know that i am below 99% of people and that i have to live with it
you have to live with being shit, and being shit and old means that you're a bottom of the barrel person. you have to live with being a piece of shit for the rest of your life and there is nothing you can do to fix it

i don't think i should read stuff that i know 100% to improve, but none of the stuff that isn't whitenoise is really enjoyable to me right now

when i get to native shit that i actually can enjoy then maybe. but right now i literally am unable to enjoy that stuff

>the catgirl is horny, the catgirl makes good intimate friends,
the sentences in real material are usually not that simple though. the sentence i read that i think says "the catgirl is horny" probably actually meant "although the catgirl is not horny right now" because that is usually how i misinterpret things
