The sad thing about the second sino-japanese war and the situation of the POW's is, the fact that chinks where so fucking weak and mostly couldnt offer any resistance against the IJA. The civilians, who couldnt defend themselves nor where trained to do so, are one thing. But trained and armed soldiers... Even if they knew what awaits them in japanese captivity, they willingly surrendered, instead to fight to the last man, like the 88th division in Shanghai did during the Stalingrad-styled street warfare. I've never understood why soldiers, no matter chinese or americans, even thought of surrendering to the japanese - i mean it was clear for anyone how they would be treated by them... I would rather just strap grenades on me and blow myself up, than to surender and to literally expierience hell on earth.


But i guess, this is the true dimension of SQUAD MORAL BROKEN. If the moral is broken, soldiers seems to tend to give themselves up... sad thing.

pretty much this. moral is a factor that is underestimated pretty often. troops without moral = dead meat, no matter how good they are armed or how many they are.

You'd think if there's anything to keep morale up, it's the thought that you either have to fight on or get to experience your eyeballs exploding. Perhaps I'm underestimating how unreasonable the fear of death makes you, but it's hard to imagined choosing torture to death before instant death.
