PC VNs are not taken seriously by the general public in Japan because even during the NEC PC-88 era, PC games were seen as cheap eroge products (whether it be actual ero VNs, adult dating sims, stripping games, scene viewers etc.) that were only really popular among male otaku audiences. And since otaku are stigmatized in Japan, you very rarely saw overlap between console developers and ero games. Consoles like the PC-Engine, and even the Sega Saturn had some ero games. But even then a lot of Saturn ports of games were censored, and didn't contain anything explicitly sexual, just light nudity motifs or stripping game elements. No hardcore penos in vagoo fucking.

It'd probably be an exaggeration to say that you can count the number of scenes the protagonist isn't a part of on your hands, but it's still pretty absurd. Something like 95% of scenes directly revolve around Gudao/Gudako. And it is markedly worse than any other protag-perspective centric work on account of what a complete non-character Gudao/Gudako is, and how despite this, they're always the focus when they're in the scene. Every character is always lobbying and vying for the protagonist's ear and hardly interacts with the other characters. And when they do interact with each other, it's very basic, borderline gag shit like the little faux rivalry Musashi and Caenis have in Olympus.
