The bug eye principle used to be counter-balanced with some realism though. For example Angel Beats (which is nowhere close to peak aesthetics) had bug eyes and a "cute"-style, but it looked fine because their heads weren't rounded like toys. I refuse to watch/play anything where the art is "moe". It's for manchildren. Thankfully there are a lot of VNs/other media still being made with good art.

Trigger has a great visual style. Anyone who says art like Kill La Kill/Darling in the Franxx/Edgerunners isn't peak aesthetics is lying. This isn't relevant to them at all though, they can just afford actual real artists. I think a lot of VN devs can't afford good artists, so they just put some moeblob shit (which takes no skill to draw) in a rehashed game and try to capture the manchild crowd to turn a meager profit. The art is generally better the higher the budget is. Ironically this is why Light titles (the only company that could afford to make a modern, functioning VN engine) always have great art. マガツバライ just came out and has better art than 99% of VNs.

As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of visual novels, I was highly disappointed by Sakuuta. The overbearing philosophical ideas were a tedious bore, and the writing by Scaji was pretentious and shallow.

The concept of "self" and "identity" was heavily explored, but it felt forced and inauthentic. The use of Japanese words, such as 無限 and 無, only added to the pretentiousness of the writing.

Furthermore, the characters were shallow and lacked depth. Their actions and motivations felt contrived and lacking in substance.

Overall, Sakuuta was a disappointment and a waste of my time. I would not recommend it to anyone who values meaningful storytelling and genuine character development. 十分に遠慮してください

When they started chasing Misao I expected some actual chuuni racing where Muramasa would learn some new ability to be able to beat those filthy racing tsurugi but instead he just oneshoted her with some magic, the end. And the way he killed Kanae off screen is literally no comment, they didn't even try to make it somehow emotional or something, literally killed one of the main cast and no one in the game seems to care about it

I really enjoyed the later parts of sakuuta and I'm looking forward to Sakutoki, but fuck me you won't hear me defending it for it's abysmal start. It's not hard to see why opinions are divergent with how inconsistent it is. I'm hopeful for sakutoki since Scaji decided to actually trim the fat and cut out the routes for the students which were initially planned. On one hand it's a shame with how cute some of them are, on the other I don't want a repeat of Makoto's or Rin's routes funnily enough, I'm sure Makoto's getting another route

Putting the questionable pacing aside I wholeheartedly love Sakura no Uta but there's always one thing that I just cannot but think to be such a shame. Like the post funeral segments of the chapter is some of the best things i have ever read; made feel things i wasn't aware i was capable of feeling. Using death to make a reader sympathize with characters is pretty common in fiction, sakuuta isn't any different but it still manages to stray apart from it's peers and gives a peculiar sense of mourning to you, the reader.
Everything else is pretty mediocre. I hate all the heroines, none amuses me. Maybe Rin just a tad bit, but she is whatever as well.
