THIS. A character's theme song in a Touhou game matches the character's personality extremely well in almost all circumstances. A stage theme song matches the intensity of bullet patterns in the stage with the pace almost ALWAYS.

Listen to Capital City of Flowers in the Sky. You can tell just by listening where the shitstorms of bullets come in, where you fight Lily White, where you start getting deathfairies, and finally the breather at the end where you have a five second pause to catch your breath before the boss.

Which is why I used to find the MoF hate amusing. It seems to happen with every new release, at first there is amusement at the new characters, quickly followed by 'the music isn't as good these days' along with the usual picking apart the actual mechanics (which admittedly are MoF's weak points) then after a year or two people realise they love it and the new characters they were uncertain about.

Same happened to SA, lots of 'the music is kind of meh' comments, laughter at the new characters and how retarded they looked, bitching about certain mechanics. Now everyone loves the characters and many of the themes are cherished.

It'll probably happen to UFO in time. Byakuren is already very popular, along with her followers. The most popular themes are now getting rearranges, some rather good ones, some not so good. Chances are people will remember it fondly. Where it stands in the series depends on the individual though, personally I think it was a good game, but I preferred SA's style. The UFO's were a nice gimmick but take too much attention away from the patterns.

I doubt it.

I've been a fan since a bit before MoF.

MoF was very awesome on release; almost all the complaints were about the gameplay (specifically, the bombing system and lack of graze). These were actually valid enough complaints that ZUN rolled then back in SA (the grazing) and UFO (the bombing).

SA was extremely awesome on release. When the demo came out, everyone was like HOLY SHIT A BUCKET LOLI etc etc etc. The primary complaint was that it was hard as fuck, but everyone instantly loved a large portion of the music. I know I definitely did.

UFO was just shit on release. Almost none of the themes stood out, the characters were mostly boring, and the UFO mechanic was simply retarded.

Trying to defend UFO by saying "this is how it always works" is retarded, because this is not how it always works.

Character popularity is unrelated to the topic. Characters obviously get more doujin material and more backstory over time, so obviously there will be more fanworks now about Flandre than there are about Parsee.

This has nothing to do work "warming up" to the characters; it's simply the fact that the creation of good material takes time.

>> No.4194959

Selective memory. All these three titles have gone through the same cycle, at least in this community of having the initial release rush (FUCK YEAH, I LOVE THIS NEW SHIT) to the following backlash (ACTUALLY THE MUSIC IS PRETTY CRAP COMPARED TO PREVIOUS BLAH BLAH BLAH) to a year later when the community has moved on to looking forward to the next title and every has taken a more realistic approach to judging the game, admitting it's flaws and successes.

Granted the length each stage lasts depends on the strength of the title and the community at the time, but I remember the MoF hate several months after, along with the SA hate for a little while. SA wasn't disliked nearly as strongly, but a fair number of people did think the music wasn't up to the usual standard for a while.

>> No.4194962

Canon Flandre doesn't have much of a personality (shooting game boss)
What I'm saying is that the music is a great part the basis of her (interpreted) personality. You hear her theme song, "make a circle around it" and say: "this is her personality" instead of knowing her personality, and then testing if the theme song fits that personality.
Same can be seen in doujin artists' portrayal of Flandre.

But your argument is like saying 'You're just interpreting Byakuren's dialogue in a certain way to make it sound like she cares about youkai and humans living peacefully!'. There is interpretation, and there is the actual primary data that we get given in canon for determining a character's personality. The character theme is a part of the package we get given by ZUN to imagine the character's personality, along with the art and the dialogue.

In fact, I don't recall there being nearly as many complaints about the MoF music than there were about the music in SA and UFO. Of course, this could be due to faulty memory, but I still feel as though more people appreciated MoF's music upon release than they did SA's music or UFO's music.
