don't think it's necessarily a matter of right and wrong, but what makes you think that? I don't know much about Chinese phonology (of course that's a broad term), but as far as I know once you get the tones down the patters are extremely consistent. I don't know how similar their phonemes are to English though. Japanese phonology is more complex than a lot of people realize, but they share a lot of phonemes with English and many others have slight differences. it's the pitch accent that is mainly a pain as there's no way to necessarily know the accent of a word unless you hear it (and even then there might be variations like with 僕)

ever wonder why japs can't make the V sound, when it seems so basic?
They make their m and n sounds while exhaling through the nose, while English speakers do it exhaling through the mouth.
To test if you're making properly japanese M/N sounds, hold you rnose closed and make the sound. If it still comes out, you're doing it wrong.
Then make the V sound and realize, it's literally impossible to make the V sound with nasal exhalation, only the mouth can do it. Japs are used to going through the nose so they don't realize they have to use their mouth and that's why they can't VVVVVVVVVVVV.
I suspect many japs' G sound sounds very close to their N for the same nasal reason
