The "trust system" between [Aoto] and the heroines reveals itself to be much deeper the more you delve into it.
The monster meter thing (has always been in AT games on the maps), once it goes down to 0 results in no further monsters appearing doesn't work well with increasing your level.
More than enough content, even for those that want to enjoy every aspect of it.
If you can get over the heroines undressing, you won't regret the purchase.

I've only finished Luca's route in AT2, and while I'm looking forward to seeing the other heroine's stories, I for one liked the way Luca turned out to have a lot more behind her cheery facade, even if she wasn't exactly an exemplar of humanity.

The main thing with the US version was that they removed half of the Japanese voices. Hence, a lot just torrented the undub (hacked version with all of the voices reinsterted) and played it on an emualtor or softmodded PS2.

Of course it doesn't break the game or anything, but it's good to know at least.

While the Ar Tonelico dubs aren't downright awful, there's still a hell of a lot of areas where is falls completely flat or just sounds a bit silly. There are areas where you know they're enjoying themselves though.

At least they only removed half of the Japanese dub, replacing the entire thing would have been pretty bad.

Also the Japanese dub of AT2 has Miyuki Sawashiro voicing Cloche. Why the hell wouldn't you want more of that?

Well its a problem when they are bad.

The issue comes from professionalism as voice acting is not considered a lesser job in Japan and so its at least of acceptable quality, the same cannot be said in NA were it seems to something its done before "real work".

Not everyone in NA is bad but the lower the game profile the worst it usually gets.

Sorry, what I mean more specifically is that it's hard for the voices to have an impact on me if I can't understand them. I nearly always play in Japanese since the English tends to be so grating, but I guess I feel the effect of the voices themselves are lost if I can't understand them. Plus, I read much faster than people speak.

Well for me, I always keep the English voices on, even when there's a Japanese voice option. Even though I can read the characters' dialouge, I still prefer actually hearing it in the language I understand (plus I won't miss out on what they're saying in battles).

Some English voices are bad, but not all of them. There were several games I played that were funny/funnier (to me) thanks to how the English VA deliver their lines. Persona 3-4 and especially Disgaea series are the ones I can think of at the top of my head.

I actually like games that let me cycle through languages easily best, like Disgaea. And I'll always listen to a good dub--BlazBlue was really good, especially since they usually never dub all the reaction noises in fighting games. I always hated hearing them saying stuff to each other and not knowing what it was--some of the funniest moments in the game are in those exchanges.

When a dub makes me cringe with embarassment, though, I'd rather just play with the sound off.

In my case, the language barrier hasn't ever seemed like a barrier to understanding emotion. Or least it hasn't in the time frame that where I've had choices of using English or Japanese on my whim.

I just always prefer to use the Japanese ones because I perhaps can't tell if they are bad (they never really seem to be, and I do pay attention), where I can certainly tell when the English ones are bad.

The Persona 4 dub is pretty good; for some reason I couldn't get the undub working so I just ended up playing the dub. Some of the roles are a bit iffy or played in a way that wasn't intended, but it works fine overall. Played the undub later, which was also good.

The thing is that dubs always tend to be of much lower buget than the original voice tracks.
Japanese dubs are lousy too and it follows the same principle, the fact that it is a dub is what makes it bad, not the language itself.
And true while being a dub Kate Higgins at least managed to do a terrific job with Croche, at least in my oppinion, and the other character's voices in AT wasn't that bad either, overall the AT games have good dubs with AT2's dub being a bit better.

And sure voice acting might be bigger in Japan or in Asia for that matter, it doesn't matter all that much as it usually comes down to the budget spent and the ammount of work that they put in either way. There are skilled voice actors in the western world as well.

I'm not sure why NISA even exists. Why not just have Atlus localize their games? All they've done is Disgaea and tons of shitty JRPGS no one's ever heard of.

Regardless, I have cautious optimism towards AT III, because it technologically resembles a game of the current era. When was the last next-gen JRPG? Valkyria Chronicles? They'd have to be blind to not see they have a chance of actually making money with this game.

I've always found competition a funny thing when it comes to Intellectual Property. Sure, two companies can compete on the quality of translation, but they have a monopoly on whatever IPs they buy.

Part of what I like about funsubs is that there is actual competition over who can translate a specific series the best, but NISA can shit on Ar Tonelico and that's the end of that (or it would be, if not for the fan project).

NISA has experience in localizing jRPGs, so while they aren't in Atlus USA's league, at least they're still better than XSEED and Ignition.
