I tried to apply for game dev job but they rejected me because of the "personality test" made by antifairi that said that I have mental illness and not yayness. The golden rule is to aim for material where you understand 80-90% of the input. I started off listening to a lot of N5 and N4 listening practice videos, comprehensible input, simple conversations with subtitles, etc. Little by little I started to get accustomed to listening out for words I knew or anticipating words, and when I felt like I was getting the gist consistently at a natural pace I moved up another notch.

Don't worry about where you enter, you will likely test lower than you think. If you haven't studied or lived in Japan before the whole experience will feel like an alien planet to you so it's not that easy to prepare for. There's an app called Kanji Study that I use for writing practice, when you do the writing quizzes it gives you a definition and reading and then asks you to write the appropriate kanji. It even forces you to use the correct stroke order, so it's quite handy. I would recommend using that or something similar to help you practice your writing and get comfortable with it.

You'll have to learn to survive when you go to Japan, so you'll be forced to learn the basic scaffolding of the language whether you like it or not unless you just sit inside all day and do nothing (so why bother going to Japan at all at that point). Your focus at the language school, to make the most of the experience, should be to learn the new lessons and then immediately apply them in the wild with your study partners or with people you interact with outside the classroom until you have it down pat. Japanese people will gloss over your mistakes and be glad just to see you making the effort, though, so you'll need to ask your Japanese friends to be strict with you. Like... seriously tell them to kick your ass about mistakes or they won't.

Every time I play a visual novel, and spend hours, days, talking to a girl, getting to know her, falling in love, and then she leans over, blushing, and tells me she loves me too. That always fills me with such joy. And it always becomes a memory I cherish for a lifetime, and that gives me strength when I think I have nothing left. Nothing else compares to that wonderful moment.
I suppose you could read a translated version (I read translated visual novels for many years before finally studying Japanese) but the difference in impact between reading the words "I love you" on a screen and hearing the woman you love say those words to you in her own voice is as vast as the ocean. It's like the difference between noon and midnight.
Learning Japanese has improved my life in too many ways to count; if I was to try to list them I'd run out of characters and have to spread it over multiple posts. But that's the best one. That one special moment. It makes it all worth it.
If I got hit on the head and forgot all the Japanese I've learned, I'd learn it all again to hear her says those words to me just one more time.

I remember it like this: 余る (amaru) means to be in excess, or to be left over. あまり is the -masu stem, which is a connective form that can be used to join it to other things. So when I see things like あまり。。。ない I think "not in excess/not excessively so". The base verb uses a kanji with meanings relating to abundance and excess, so one of the uses is for when something is left over: there was too much of it. As for your example sentence, a literal meaning would probably be like when you wrote. "It isn't excessively good" is an understatement to politely talk about its quality (or lack thereof). "It's not too expensive" has a different feel than "it's kind of cheap".

It's worth remembering that the literal translations that help us see how sentences or words are connected or put together are very different from the natural translations that tell us what a sentence is really conveying as far as mood or tone. I tend to use literal translations for comprehending the building blocks, and natural translations for comprehending the overall feel.

I do that in English when the material doesn't interest me. I've read books that were so bad and boring that I began to gloss over entire pages because I just couldn't commit to them. If you seriously wanna tackle those segments then do what I did, grab a piece of paper (or throw the file into an image editor and cover it with black) and then reveal a little at a time, scanning through the lines one by one without the rest of it cluttering your field of vision. If you hit 250-500 you're still a beginner, 2-3000 you can handle basic conversations, and around 8-10k you can consider yourself fluent or native level. To read a newspaper without issue in English can require a certain degree of fluency depending on the articles, but a Japanese newspaper is even more resistant to fluff than English so it tends to cut right to the point. Have you tried reading recipe books, basic textbooks, research papers or any other kind of non-fiction besides the news? Blogs, for example, or dev updates for video games? Those tend to be written in more human language, and are more approachable. It should help ease the transition.
