There was no evil in the beginning but with the castellations of cute magic the reversed cute magic that starting to grasp fairi`s subjectivity in the reversed cage occurs which makes fairi the antifairi - until the nex reborn cycle(the antifairi lit kys to become fairi again) while everyfairi is yms and lvie immortal 4ever yong and yay. >got any asmr recommendations? The golden rule is to aim for material where you understand 80-90% of the input. I started off listening to a lot of N5 and N4 listening practice videos, comprehensible input, simple conversations with subtitles, etc. Little by little I started to get accustomed to listening out for words I knew or anticipating words, and when I felt like I was getting the gist consistently at a natural pace I moved up another notch.

Some recommendations:
https://www.youtube.com/@moshimoshi.yusuke/videos
https://www.youtube.com/@Onomappu/videos
https://www.youtube.com/@ComprehensibleJapanese/videos
https://www.youtube.com/@NKTofficial/videos
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh-GhnQ7qDQmS6Bz3pGc1Mw/videos
https://www.youtube.com/@kotolabo/videos

Depending on your level, NKT and KotoLabo are gonna fly right over your head, but the others should be relatively easy to start wrapping your head around for listening practice.

I'll be moving to Osaka this next year, and hopefully starting full time language school in April. We're planning to attend the YMCA Language School. (https://www.osakaymca.ac.jp/nihongo/))

I've studied Japanese off and on over the past years, and I want to enter at a higher level so I've taken many lessons on italki to fill in the gaps in my understanding. I am fairly confident I could pass the JLPT N4, but I haven't practiced writing much at all.

Other than firming up my base, is there any other advice you could give? Extra points if you have any experience with the YMCA School!

I'm also particularly interested in the dynamic of how learning Japanese in a language school helps or hinders on the road to fluency.

Don't worry about where you enter, you will likely test lower than you think. If you haven't studied or lived in Japan before the whole experience will feel like an alien planet to you so it's not that easy to prepare for. Trust me you will need time to acclimatize and figure out how to order food at your local Sukiya.

You will also get tested on written communication in Japanese as well as being able to recall reading and writing of kanji from memory. The placement test is a 10 min assessment to help the school gauge where to start you off, the real journey starts after that

There's an app called Kanji Study that I use for writing practice, when you do the writing quizzes it gives you a definition and reading and then asks you to write the appropriate kanji. It even forces you to use the correct stroke order, so it's quite handy. I would recommend using that or something similar to help you practice your writing and get comfortable with it.

You'll have to learn to survive when you go to Japan, so you'll be forced to learn the basic scaffolding of the language whether you like it or not unless you just sit inside all day and do nothing (so why bother going to Japan at all at that point). Your focus at the language school, to make the most of the experience, should be to learn the new lessons and then immediately apply them in the wild with your study partners or with people you interact with outside the classroom until you have it down pat. Japanese people will gloss over your mistakes and be glad just to see you making the effort, though, so you'll need to ask your Japanese friends to be strict with you. Like... seriously tell them to kick your ass about mistakes or they won't.

Every time I play a visual novel, and spend hours, days, talking to a girl, getting to know her, falling in love, and then she leans over, blushing, and tells me she loves me too. That always fills me with such joy. And it always becomes a memory I cherish for a lifetime, and that gives me strength when I think I have nothing left. Nothing else compares to that wonderful moment.
I suppose you could read a translated version (I read translated visual novels for many years before finally studying Japanese) but the difference in impact between reading the words "I love you" on a screen and hearing the woman you love say those words to you in her own voice is as vast as the ocean. It's like the difference between noon and midnight.
Learning Japanese has improved my life in too many ways to count; if I was to try to list them I'd run out of characters and have to spread it over multiple posts. But that's the best one. That one special moment. It makes it all worth it.
If I got hit on the head and forgot all the Japanese I've learned, I'd learn it all again to hear her says those words to me just one more time.

I remember it like this: 余る (amaru) means to be in excess, or to be left over. あまり is the -masu stem, which is a connective form that can be used to join it to other things. So when I see things like あまり。。。ない I think "not in excess/not excessively so". In English the natural translation for Xあまり食べません would be "I don't really eat X" but it's the same feeling of understatement that we have in English if someone were to say "I don't do it too much".

How exactly can it mean to be left over? The decks translate it as (not) much and gives a sentence that the "The beer here is not really good." Does it mean the beer is not doing too much in the regards of tasting good?

>> No.41880806

>>41880755
The base verb uses a kanji with meanings relating to abundance and excess, so one of the uses is for when something is left over: there was too much of it. As for your example sentence, a literal meaning would probably be like when you wrote. "It isn't excessively good" is an understatement to politely talk about its quality (or lack thereof). It's like the difference between when you say something is inexpensive (low price, potentially a good value) vs cheap (low price because the quality is low). "It's not too expensive" has a different feel than "it's kind of cheap".

It's worth remembering that the literal translations that help us see how sentences or words are connected or put together are very different from the natural translations that tell us what a sentence is really conveying as far as mood or tone. I tend to use literal translations for comprehending the building blocks, and natural translations for comprehending the overall feel.

On the other hand that's a good suggestion. Voiced VNs along with recently subbed anime made me notice annoying inconsistences in translation in the first place. Spoiling translation so much that I could distinguish wrong differences with mere intonation or phrase length must've be made on purpose by the translators.

I do that in English when the material doesn't interest me. I've read books that were so bad and boring that I began to gloss over entire pages because I just couldn't commit to them. If you're doing this for work you'd take an approach that helps you force yourself over the hurdle, but for pleasure if it's inconvenient then we tend to avoid the labor. If you seriously wanna tackle those segments then do what I did, grab a piece of paper (or throw the file into an image editor and cover it with black) and then reveal a little at a time, scanning through the lines one by one without the rest of it cluttering your field of vision. When you don't know a lot of the kanji, when it's already hard to follow, the excess visual stimulation can be murder.

Here you go. Go down that list until you hit a word you don't know and don't even recognize. If you hit 250-500 you're still a beginner, 2-3000 you can handle basic conversations, and around 8-10k you can consider yourself fluent or native level. To read a newspaper without issue in English can require a certain degree of fluency depending on the articles, but a Japanese newspaper is even more resistant to fluff than English so it tends to cut right to the point. Have you tried reading recipe books, basic textbooks, research papers or any other kind of non-fiction besides the news? Blogs, for example, or dev updates for video games? Those tend to be written in more human language, and are more approachable. It should help ease the transition.

this is gonna sound lame, but I started by just memorizing katakana at a young age, and more recently I started figuring out how to read hiragana , and having some sense of sentence structure.

Right now my biggest struggle is that I want to be able to play like untranslated games, and manga, and the prospect of understanding another language unlike most male otakus is appealing to me, but I seem to have little direction on what to practice and slacking for even a few days causes something to slip out, which I guess means I haven't been trying hard enough.

Should I be a masochist and set all my vidya to japanese and beat my head with Japanese websites and videos and stuff? I know it isn't supposed to be easy, but I kinda don't have a direction here

I do have a close friend who is helping me when they have time, but they told me I still read like I'm using google translate and that I have no "vibe" like I'm speaking the way a japanese man would. Sorry for the blog. any advice?

That makes no sense. What does "native level" mean? A native 5 year old is fluent, but their vocab level is tiny. A native college educated adult is fluent but they know about 50 thousand words.
Fluency has nothing to do with how many words you know.

Fluency has everything to do with how many words you know, can understand, and can use competently and constructively. A native five year old isn't fluent, that's why they go to school and learn their colors, the names of animals, the names of places and concepts and how to string them together. The moment you tie language proficiency to anything that isn't "proficiency in the language" you've lost the thread of your argument entirely. What native five year olds have is exposure to the language in a way that its rules are ingrained firmly and intuitively and its internal logic laid bare to them, so all they really need to do is accumulate words and...exist in their culture soaking up examples.

10k is an undershot, by the by. Some figures go as high as 25k-50k but then we get into debates about whether morphemes are words or word families and whether Japanese conjugates or inflects (like is 食べる a different "word" than 食べません and does anyone besides linguists actually care).

>> No.41886473

just figure out the exact number of english words you know and then learn that many japanese words

>> No.41886482

>>41886440
Depends on what you mean by "native level". Do we count backwoods Southerners with limited vocabulary as being "native English speakers"? If so, then the Japanese equivalent in the countryside without specialized knowledge on engineering or jewelry-making or in-depth anime knowledge is also a "native speaker" even if they're not a college graduate and not particularly eloquent, and someone who develops their skills to that level is also "native level". If by "native level" you mean a college grad who wield their pen like a sword of truth and can write works of literature across multiple subjects, and I don't know why you would, then yeah, 10k is the low bar.

>> No.41886496
