no, thats not what dunning kruger means, how he uses it is wrong, too, it merely means the difficulty of something is underestimated by absolute laymen, it has nothing to do with intelligence or ability, rather, its a result of "when people are good at something, they make it look easy", so laymen tend to think really hard things are easier than they are because they have no experience with them (the "i could do that" effect)

Does anyone regret getting to a high proficiency in Japanese? (self.LearnJapanese)

submitted 9 months ago by word_hunter

https://cotoacademy.com/study-hours-needed-pass-jlpt-comparison-levels/#:~:text=Study%20Hours%20Needed%20for%20N3,that%20course%20takes%201500%20hours.

This is an article that compares how many hours it takes (on average) people to get proficient enough to pass the different levels of the JLPT vs other high skilled subjects such as architecture. It's amazing how much we can get done in the same amount of time it takes to scratch the surface of Japanese.

As for me: I have reached an intermediate level of Japanese after many embarrassingly long years (started in 2014) and still, I don't want to quit anytime soon. There are so many things I want to learn that require Japanese as the ticket in. Whether it's history, art, work, or another aspect of Japanese culture that keeps me going back to hit the books I don't feel I wasted any time. I've learned discipline, how to humble my ego (on a good day), and how to grind past the boredom of repetitive skill-building. More importantly, it allowed for relationships and friends I couldn't have gained without my ability to communicate in Japanese. Also, I am always learning how to be mature in a different culture and assimilate my identity. It has not been a straight line of fun and ease but the lows were always worth it to me.

look up other 熟語 with the same kanji and use the most common one.
actually in the case of 星茸 it's probably ほしたけ instead of せいじょう,
a quick search shows that types of mushroom use "たけ" instead of the on-reading "じょう", like 平茸, 榎茸, 舞茸 ect...
this is the sort of stuff you wouldn't know unless you live in japan and buy mushrooms in the combini.

anyway, don't worry too much about it as a beginner. there's a lot of other stuff you need to learn.

I guess you've never tried it before but after failing an old card you generally won't fail it again until it gets pushed back to show up later in a month or so or more
the context you mined it from will help the acquisition process and you'll hopefully encounter it again at least a couple times before it shows up again in your reviews, and then you'll just easy it
there's a reason why the majority of mature cards stay that way. the point of the spaces repetition anki thing is to help you with the ones that slip through the cracks for whatever reason that may be.

DJT bros, DO NOT make the same mistake I did!!!
I really wanted an e-reader to immerse in JP novels.
I was agonizing over the choice, libra2 vs kindle, and even posted here about it a while ago.
Ended up going for the Libra2 because of the comfy one-handable form factor, and the slightly better screen. BIG MISTAKE!!!
Those fuckers at kobo, despite being acquired by a JP company years and years ago (rakuten) can't even accomplish the basic as fuck task of parsing japanese text.
That's right, on a kobo, if you click on a word you just get 1 character highlited and looked up in the dictionary.
You have to MANUALLY select the entire word, which trust me on a eink screen is just torture.
The only alternative is to install ko-reader, where the word lookup works as you'd expect... except that it's basically impossible to extract the words you looked up from koreader (on kindle it's super easy, you just use a program like kindlemate), and koreader opens up the whole document at once so if like me you load a 6k pages long web novel, any time you want to rotate the device or change the font or increase/decrease font size, it takes literally a minute.
Absolute fucking joke.
Everyone online just licks kobo's buttcheecks because they aren't amazon, but it's completely retarded.

TLDR: IF YOU WANT AN E-READER JUST BUY A KINDLE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!!!
Kobo is just a joke.

I also jumped on the kobo train because everyone raved about how much more open it was, compared to being bezos bitch, but being open has no meaning if it's this much worse, especially when it's actually easier to extract the vocab from a kindle than a kobo: at this point, it feels stupid to say that a kobo is more open than a kindle.

It's for a company ran by westerners with a generally relaxed environment, so no japanese work horror stories incoming, I don't think.
Also I'm a game programmer, I'd rather be doing that in Japan than working for someone like Blizzard or Ubisoft or whatever. Japanese games for sure need better programmers than whatever they have now, desu.

Last time I had time to get into japanese I was using itazuraneko, and it was fine, I double-check most things I find on the internet anyway.
Either way, I'm only using the Anki decks from there, other than that I trust Genki and Japanese For Busy People way more than any /jp/ website.

>>41876647
Marine Senchou is my favourite grandma, I'll probably listen to her for a bit of practice once I'm comfortable enough, and I read manga every day anyway, so might as well do it in Japanese while I'm at it.

Great, even writing あ, こ and に make me fuck up strokes so hard they lose any resemblance of form and quickly become incomprehensible. こ becomes a partly visible 8 which breaks に respectively. Then あ becomes divided into separate "t" on top of "の" instead overlaying each other. I am used to writing lengthy waves and loops of latin and cyrilic letters so much these spaced short strokes make my hand twitch and not write. Can blank paper induce such problems?
