While I'm reading my eroge raw should I translate every kanji compound I can't read or don't know? you have to find a groove that works for you. if you never look up anything your acquisition will slow tremendously. if you look up all the time that will also slow you down.
if you find a sentence with just one word you can't read you probably wanna mine that shit. Even if there are other words in the sentence you don't know, as long as you can read them, mine it and look those words up. that way that card will help yoi acquire new kanji and prime you to notice those other words in listening and stuff

nta but if he already heard lots of Japanese before grinding vinnies it's possible his brain had the neural framework to internally vocalize decently accurate pronunciation so his listening didn't have to play too much catch up

are you doing cards with just one word a whole sentence. often times the context surrounding words when you encounter them in the wild makes them much easier to recognize than in isolation

Learning grammar can assist in acquiring some stuff faster, but it's far from necessary. No matter how much you can understand a sentence when consciously analyzing it, you need to have received enough input to unconsciously understand what's happening. Just like your native language which you were able to understand before you even knew what grammar was. Grammar is too complicated to calculate in real time to comprehend messages while listening or reading (even more true for speaking and writing), so you have to soak your brain in the language until your unconscious mind has it all set up.

to learn japanese means you've given up on success at anything else
