Hi everyone, this is my first time posting. I think this sub reddit is really helpful and has lot of great resources. I finished genki 1 and 2 and did 3 months of immersion for around 8 hours a day. I watched a some anime, video games and recently a manga and would look up each word in the dictionary. I was hoping I'd be around 80% fluent by now, but while I've improved a lot I'm still nowhere near 80% yet. There's just soo many unknown words. I was wondering if you guys could give me some tips on how to progress further, (without sentence mining) and how long it took for you to immerse until you become 80% fluent. Thank you!

Nope, just make sure you can read every word you learn in kanji. If you can't recognize/read a word from seeing its kanji, count that as you not knowing the word. Your brain will build up the patterns to be able to read kanji that way. It gets faster as you go.
When you try to read something and you find kanji you don't know and you want to look up the word, use jisho.org or something to find it with the radicals. This will also build up your ability to recognize and learn new kanji. Again, this also starts out really slow but you get really fast faster than you think.

I know from experience that with listening in particular, even when you feel like you're not improving, your brain is constantly gathering data and you will be shocked one day at your progress, but your listening feeds off of your vocab growth from reading (and watchign with subs). well I am aware that the JLPT test won't really make me learn japanese, that's why I want to go Japan, but most opportunities I can get needs N3.

I already learned 2k words with an old "vn" deck, which increased my vocab but it wasn't that useful. The N4 deck actually helped to be able to start reading manga.

So as my N3 exams would potentially be around July, I will need to learn the necessary vocab in less than 8 months. One point of interest of these N4-3 decks is that they don't display the furigana for the kanjis you need to know.
