Hi everyone, this is my first time posting. I think this sub reddit is really helpful and has lot of great resources. I finished genki 1 and 2 and did 3 months of immersion for around 8 hours a day. I watched a some anime, video games and recently a manga and would look up each word in the dictionary. I was hoping I'd be around 80% fluent by now, but while I've improved a lot I'm still nowhere near 80% yet. There's just soo many unknown words. I was wondering if you guys could give me some tips on how to progress further, (without sentence mining) and how long it took for you to immerse until you become 80% fluent. Thank you!

Nope, just make sure you can read every word you learn in kanji. If you can't recognize/read a word from seeing its kanji, count that as you not knowing the word. Your brain will build up the patterns to be able to read kanji that way. It gets faster as you go.
When you try to read something and you find kanji you don't know and you want to look up the word, use jisho.org or something to find it with the radicals. This will also build up your ability to recognize and learn new kanji. Again, this also starts out really slow but you get really fast faster than you think.

That's fine actually. I know from experience that with listening in particular, even when you feel like you're not improving, your brain is constantly gathering data and you will be shocked one day at your progress, but your listening feeds off of your vocab growth from reading (and watchign with subs). Even though you don't *feel* the improvement while listening like with reading, it's absolutely happening and it will pay off, trust me.

well I am aware that the JLPT test won't really make me learn japanese, that's why I want to go Japan, but most opportunities I can get needs N3.

I already learned 2k words with an old "vn" deck, which increased my vocab but it wasn't that useful. The N4 deck actually helped to be able to start reading manga.

So as my N3 exams would potentially be around July, I will need to learn the necessary vocab in less than 8 months. One point of interest of these N4-3 decks is that they don't display the furigana for the kanjis you need to know.

What would you recommend then ?

memorizing the meaning from anki cards is not as important. memorizing the reading is.
besides, pretending like you can learn japanese without knowing readings is insanity. also i will speak and listen to japanese.

>yeah and you could learn everything while reading but if you're using anki anyways why not study a word with the context in which it's used? it's dumb spending time on inefficient flashcards
yes thats the point, we want to spend a minimal amount of time in anki, to remember readings so that we can read a lot quickly.

That's what I recommend *by default* but some words are better with bilingual definitions, hell they might even be better with vocab cards rather than sentence cards. I'm referring in particular to non-abstract, concrete item/thing/animal/plant nouns. 換気扇 or 犬 or 朱色 are stupid to use a japanese dictionary for, just use the english word or even a picture you already know to learn those. the biggest issue with sentence cards is that it leads "cheating", often subconsciously
if you do sentence cards you might not even realize it but you are using the rest of the sentence to remember the word in question.
so you might think you can read 鎧 because in your anki deck its "oh this is that card with the knights, the reading is よろい and it means armor"
but then when you read your next vinnie and you see that word in a sentence that doesnt involve knights you will remember neither the reading nor meaning.
so now not only did you spend 3 times as long repping that card because you have to read a whole sentence (or maybe your eyes just saw 騎士 and skipped to 鎧, further proving my point), but you still had to look the word up when you read something else

if you're doing core 2k or whatever do as many as you can. even if you fall behind it doesn't matter just get it over with fast cause you'll see those words in immersion all the time

>>41831809
honestly wondering if i should go full autist this week and do it all in one sitting so i can never look at that fucking deck again

>> No.41831839

>>41831804
this seems like a good number to aim for, if i don't do this >>41831817 (depends how i feel tomorrow) then i'll do 20 new a day and see how i like it. thank you!

>> No.41831856

>>41831817
yeah it's of little consequence because of how common the words are, failing a bunch after cramming is ok too because you will learn them all very soon once you start immersing regularly

>> No.41831879

>>41831856
also forgetting is underrated t. Steven Kaufmann
every time you realize you forgot a word and consequently re-remember it that's a benefit, you're way less likely to forget it after that

I tried to apply for game dev job but they rejected me because of the "personality test" made by antifairi that said that I have mental illness and not yayness. The other company was yay but they can`t give me work visa because working hours a 2hour/day so only kids and dream magic archmages can apply but I have no Jp citizenship sadly... I guess my life is over :c qwq yms

"The nobler and more perfect the creature, the later and slower it matures.
A true fairi is forever kinder and never reaches "maturity" of mind and spiritual strength even by the age of 2001, while an antifairi is already mature at 18 or even earlier.
But this is also the reason for underdevelopment: antifairi as a reversed fairi remains children in a bad way all their lives.
They always see only what is in front of their noses, don`t care about dream magic and astral plane dimensions stick only to the present,
wishful thinking and prefer to delve into the little things instead of doing important things
like fruityEcology development education and yaying.
Reason says that it is not good for a person to live like an animal only in the present.
The true fairi kid must review the past and think about the future, from which his caution, care and concern follow."

I going to "yms" seriously if I can`t stay in Japan or apply for asylum in California with lgbtqia program... I can`t go to Russia because I will be in jail or tortured by oantifairi occupant`s military&psychiatric beasts666 by "law"
