I can read ~3000+ kanji. Been learning for 15 months. AMA.
Though desclaimer, there are a couple of sort aggressive questions I get often whenever I tell this to people. Stuff like "Uuh ok but can you write them?" No, I don't live in Japan and have no plans of moving there, so it's a useless skill but I might start practicing it if I get bored enough
"Uuh but can you write this post in japanese?" I guess I could, but it wouldn't even be close to native level japanese. Of course I can't speak fluently after 15 months of learning
However, there is a question which I can answer positively to. "How's your comprehension?". Very good. That's how I learned all these kanji after all. The title could be "How I reached close to native level japanese comprehension just by reading books and visual novels in 1 year" but having 3000 kanji under my belt sounds better as a title

Everything kinda made sense while I was grinding core2.3k, the way same kanji were used in different words was more or less consistent, same few readings, related meanings. But once I started my mining deck, it's been a total clusterfuck of random ass readings and even semantically it often feels completely unrelated to words with same kanji I've learned before.

In this sentence: 愛はひとの心を砕くこともできるのさ。What does that ことも and のさ at the end doing there? The koto is supposed to be a particle (with whole bunch of meanings, fuck me) but, it is followed by mo, so it's a new topic. Why are we changing topic to a particle?

のさ you can just ignore for now, you just need to feel it out.
愛は is the topic so that's the thing we're describing, so let's leave that aside for now.
人の心 is combined into one concept: Human hearts.
砕くこと turns 砕く into a noun. Think of "to kick" turning into "a kick".
I lied in my last sentence, it's not actually just 砕く that turns into a noun, it's the verb-phrase 人の心を砕く that turns into a noun-phrase.
も just means also.
出来る means being able to.
So we have:
愛は something も出来る, in other words "love can also do something".
Something is a noun so we can replace it with any noun-phrase and it will be grammatically correct. In this case our noun-phrase is 人の心を砕く which means crushing people's hearts.
"Love can also crush people's hearts".

you just need to expose yourself to enough japanese to awaken the ability to think in it, when you do, all of this stuff will just make sense
what you are doing to yourself right now is pausing the process every time you come across something you don't quite get and getting frustrated/overthinking it.
just try reading SIMPLE stuff you like, tadoku, hukumusume, simple manga and try to read it, and just keep going
listening works too, music, podcasts, vbijin, whatever, most important thing is to just keep going.
>but i don't understand absolutely everything!
thats okay you don't have to, all you have to do is "think" about it, actively, try to derive meaning and notice the patterns.
few japanese things do subtle, if the theme is love doing whatever, trust me, you will find out.

translation isn't 1:1
a direct translation is not always correct for every sentence. this is why machine translation can never actually take over (unless it can learn to not always directly translate, which is out of reach to say the least.)
for example, if the police pop out and say 動くない !
"Freeze!" would be an acceptable translation for that specific scene. of course, that translation will never appear in a dictionary.
again, this is why translation is a real job, and people don't just sit on jisho for every word.

Ok, I guess, that's how things work. But I cannot do it, I can't process Japanese this way. I ask a question here, people answer in japanese, and there is something like a veil covering everything they say so even when cheating with yomichan I can only wildly guess wjat they are saying. I was looking at the 人の心 and I just don't feel it as human hearts. I only see man の heart. Heart of man? Man heart? I just cannot process it into a coherent language myself. in order to understand grammar you have to understand it in japanese. When a guide uses english building blocks to make a model that resembles the japanese grammar, there's a limit on how accurate the explanations can be.

Cure Dolly has three major problems. It's a patreon scam. You have to keep paying for her poop. Then, it is simply incorrect. After watching it you will make false assumptions about Japanese. It makes Japanese look harder than it is. Second, it is difficult to watch because it is made by a TTS schizo. Third, it is long. You're better off reading a written guide. Tatsumoto's guide says to use All About Particles.

If you want to learn Japanese, follow people who actually know jack shit when it comes to learning a foreign language. Tatsumoto's guide to Japanese is among them.

I was in your position
Recently my listening ability has exploded, I'm able to listen to fresh content without context/subtitles and understand raw much more suddenly in the past week. You just gotta keep listening, your brain will figure out for you
I noticed that I improved a lot after listening to anime series I'd already seen. I listened to acouple series I watched recently with japanese subtitles, and then I listened to HxH 99 (which I'd watched multiple times years ago with english subs. I've read the manga and seen both series multiple times, so I know what happens very well but never in japanese before)
I found that after listening to a couple "fresh" series that I'd just watched with JP subs, which helped me hear the worsd I knew were there from fresh experience, plust listening to a series whose words I didn't know at all but whose story I knew exactly, my listening ability really exploded. now i'm listening to youtube essays and vtubers etc. and now isntead of noise/syllables with words/phrases standing out, I hear everything, *including the unknown words*
Now I can even acquire new vocab thorugh raw listening, which I thought was impossible before..

Hope that helps anon, my experience lately ahs been very rewarding

In this novel the starting city is called エシュメルデ, and I just cannot read it without thinking that メルデ sounds exactly like "merda", which is the italian word for shit.
I think the author was going for a "esmeralda" kind of vibe with that name, but I just can't...

No. You learn words and grammar from reading (and reviewing in anki).

Watching anime is for listening practice, because it takes thousands of hours for your brain to be able to actually process phonemes and to be able to actually hear what words are being said. It's a skill unto itself that must be practiced on its own, independent of reading.

The downside with Japanese is that due to being a language with relatively low sounds (all sounds are in hira and there's only 41 of them), there's a lot of overlap. The upside however is that everything that sentence structure is insanely logical, and verb tenses are hilariously easy to learn. There's only 3 exceptions, compared to English where the only reason you don't realise a million exceptions exist is you're a native speaker. English is probably harder for nips to learn than nip is for English speakers.

You don't have to use anki and learn how to read 30000 words to be able to read the news in english, only thing you have to acquire is the meaning and that's the easiest thing to remember, the exceptions will stick to you before you realize it after reading them over and over, while for japanese you'll have to break your reading everytime there's a word you can't or are not sure how to read even if you know its meaning
Last month I had to go to Italy for a week, never learned Italian before but I still could understand more than half of what I was reading there in journals and stuff without having the need to look up anything because of how close it is to my native language

this, have you ever checked out japanese english learning youtube? it's crazy, they have to get out a pen and circle/highlight various parts of a sentence to indicate which words are verbs, which are nouns, which is the subject and object etc. in japanese though it's so easy even for noobs to instnatly know which word is doing what, even when they don't know the word... it's not even an issue. Meanwhile it takes tons of immersion just to get used to English word order so you can unconsciously know when words are nouns/verbs/adjectives etc.

Maybe it's easy for you, but I absolutely cannot process Japanese sentences. I have ZERO idea where is everything, where the sentence starts and where it ends. It's just a pile of sounds to me. just a fuzz. I can't read anything. Nothing makes sense to me. I need nouns, verbs, pronouns adjectives, prepositions to function. Meanwhile Japanese goes, makes some "noun-phrase" out of verbs and other non-noun words like --- fuck you, stop it. And no, I don't know which word is doing what. Knowing words is so pointless in Japanese because they just do some fancy shit and suddenly the word you learned as verb is now a noun, and good luck processing that. I can't.

>> No.41774181

All verbs ending in "iru" (ichidan verbs) you swap "ru" for "te/ta".

Otherwise (godan verbs):

u/tsu/ru -> tte/tta
mu/nu/bu -> nde/nda
ku -> ite/ita
gu -> ide/ida
su -> shite/shita

so

hairu (ends in iru) -> haite/haita
matsu -> matte/matta
shinu -> shinde/shinda
hanasu -> hanashite/hanashita

The only exception are kuru -> kite/kita, suru -> shite/shita, and iku -> itte/itta. That's it. That's verbs. Go grab a bunch and throw them into google translate, this shit holds up and is just a few rules to remember.

As soon as I learned this it made a LOT of shit I was reading make sense.

>> No.41774234

I've barely started learning but I know that a lot of things that are verbs in English are adjectives in Japanese. Take this example:

>私は魚が好きです
In English you'd say "I like fish", but in Japanese you'd say "Fish is likeable". "like" isn't a verb in Japanese, it's the adjective "likeable". You aren't saying you like something, you're saying you find it likeable. There's a bunch of other examples but I forgot them, like I said I'm new, but I'm not disheartened by the task before me and neither should you be. Fuck the jaded faggots in this thread, you'll make it if you keep going.

what do you mean lol, japanese follows pretty consistent rules for this so it's always obvious. in English often teh exact same word can be a noun or a verb or an adjectival noun depending on its location/relative position in a phrase, only mass immersion to build up the instincts can pick that out.
