I don't disagree with you. The situation could be argued either way depending on someone's expectations for JAV and maybe porn in general.
The good ol' days of JAV that most people talk about seems to have placed a lot of emphasis on the sex acts themselves, probably objectified the actress/role more (to better highlight the acts) and led to a rougher/harder presentation. Oversimplifying massively here but stick with me.
Obviously actresses could still be big names back then and some people would go for a title based on the actresses involved but I also think that sense of actress persona/presentation took a back seat in favour of the spotlight being on the ACTS of sex (whether it was intense or degrading or passionate or fetishistic or gimmicky or one-sided or whatever). The focus was on those moments of execution, that interface of actress unto sex act.

The industry seems to have moved away from that approach and any heavy focus on the intricacies of what's being done to an actress can feel like an echo of that older style. Instead, modern JAV looks to put the spotlight on the actress more.
I do think that there's a chicken-and-the-egg situation with the idea that JAV went from hard to soft: was the hard-soft transition the primary mover for everything else, or was it another change that prompted the hard-soft transition? Here, I don't think there was a conscious concern that JAV was too hard and needed to become softer — rather, societal, cultural, and media trends made it more attractive to go to greater efforts to instead better highlight the actress. The softness transition came later as a subsequent unintended or at least unexpected result of this paradigm shift.
You could argue that vintage JAV was a "purer" form of pornography in the context of cinema. Seeing an interesting film that happens to star Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt versus a Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt film are subtly different products. Or, a perhaps even clearer example would be seeing an interesting action film that stars Dwayne Johnson versus the yearly Rock blockbuster. The decision to watch something is a compound one involving both the talent involved and the contents but I think it's fair to say the balance of this equation has shifted somewhat. Mainstream consumption of JAV is no different.

The difference and interface between verisimilitude and veracity is also worth mentioning and relates again to expectations of pornographic material. Where veracity points to actual truthfulness, verisimilitude is the property of seeming true — of resembling reality. Western porn is famous for its perceived veracity of the physical act of intercourse itself and through this, a harder physicality and more visceral presentation that can capitalise on this apparent material truth. On the other hand, the exaggerated dirty talk adopts some poetic license for the sake of spectacle which, while not particularly realistic, offers the type of verisimilitude that can enhance the performance flair of a piece of media through exaggerated realism. Amateur porn and, in the realm of Japanese media, platforms like FC2 also offer adult material through a lens of veracity. Awkwardness is presented as what an audience perceives as real action and interaction, usually compounded by a grittier and less polished feel to shift the focus from the inherently artificial and contrived nature of all pornography to an audience perception of hyper-realism.

In contrast, most modern JAV seems to have taken verisimilitude as the new ideal: a game of impressions and feelings. Without the constraints of gritty realism and absolute adherence to truthfulness, the canvas expands to allow for even greater spectacle, poetic licence, and focus on the actress as muse. The broader brush strokes of the sex –less as intercourse and more as dance– can be better packaged with airs of sophistication. And this is before any elaborate plots and character interactions. Some studios will take it even further with an arthouse presentation to selectively enhance certain themes. Others may opt for a more gonzo style and supplement with emphasis on sex acts to anchor a title and to lean more into that aforementioned sense of veracity.

In reality, no singular approach is objectively any better (or worse) than another: it is simply different. A different approach for a different time and different tastes. But it is still JAV.
