im not even sure what you mean by direct speech. direct speech is a quote by someone but theres no quote in your question and to be in awe isn't direct speech unless someone "said it", just quotation marks don't make something direct speech, direct speech means "the speech of the actor/character/individual/whatever

Like many other US applicants, I got the notification today that I did not receive an interview this year. I’m honestly shocked at how... not upset I am?

If anything, I think I feel even more determined than I did before. I’ve wanted to move to Japan for years, so my plans B, C, D, E, F, etc. etc. are all ready to go. I’m absolutely refusing to let anything stop me!

To my fellow rejects — it’s not the end of the world! JET is one of many opportunities, so let’s not let this get us down! I’m going to begin applying to my back ups tomorrow morning. What about you?

>> No.41667993

I have a small company in Japan. We have been doing this for a while.

I have read many posts regarding Japanese toxic working environments and it never occurred to me that my own business would turn that way.
I've hired a Japanese female about two years ago. She is very hard working and gets things done but she is extremely toxic.
She talks back to me and my general manager. She uses very sarcastic language and makes those noises you get at work when someone questions something: えっ!? あ〜。。。 えっえっえっ!
You can imagine the tone and volume of her comments. Quiet enough to make people understand she doesn't agree. Even thou it is not a relevent issue.

Is not only my oppinion, her boss, the general manager (Japanese F) doesn't like her either. She also find her tone of voice sarcasticcally agressive.

She is passive-aggressive and responds with sarcasm.
As just one exampleegarding one of the projects she directs: "I was not notified about that contract? When did it start?"
So her reply was: "You were included in the email thread"
While other staff (foreigners) reply with friendly comments "Ups, sowy! I thought you read the conversation!"
I receive mountains of emails daily and have no time to read them all in detail. I would rather each manager follow through and notify whatever they consider relevant. In this case, the beggining of her client's contract should be mentioned on the work chat (I believe)

I am afraid to keep working with her becuase I fear she will infect the rest of the staff with her attitude. We had a very friendly, family like relationship before she came but I also can't afford to fire her.

It won't work to talk her into changing her attitude. The aggressiveness of her leadership will inevitably increase. I have tried to become friendly but that also doesn't work becuase she takes the "I don't have to be friend with my boss" kinda attitude.

What would you do in this situation?

I understand this may come off as sounding insecure but I just feel the need to vent and wondering if anyone can sympathise.

I’ve found foreigners in Japan and Japanese learners in general vastly overrate their own Japanese ability.

I’ve heard people with dreadful pronunciation, broken grammar and sentence structure and an inability to read even basic primary school level texts describe themselves as ‘intermediate’ or ‘advanced’.

It seems to be a trend among Japanese learners and I’m wondering if this is perpetuated by outside reinforcement? We all know the cliche “日本語が上手ですね”, but is the constant empty compliments of those around them feeding into these ideas of being better at the language than they actually are?

Posts on this sub are also suspicious. Countless threads about being saying that they have “conversational Japanese” yet complain people always want to speak English with them, or that people direct their responses towards their spouse. I imagine if they were actually good at Japanese this wouldn’t happen.

I guess I just get frustrated seeing people who suck pretend they don’t suck and then blame Japanese people for not respecting their ability.

TLDR foreigners overrate their Japanese skills and it’s annoying.

Anyone else feel Hiking culture in Japan is a little strange(for you)?

The most striking thing is how over prepared Japanese always are. They look like they are doing winter hikes in a snow blizzard in mid summer on an easy mountain, and like they are scaling mount Everest in the winter. They bring so much stuff it kinda ruins the joy of it for me if i had to do it like that.

I think its a cultural thing with Japanese hobbies (half the hobby is always about the things and details) but hiking is where it goes too far because you can endlessly justify taking anything hiking or camping, they dont know where to draw the line. They have ¥ 100,000 boots ready for professional Himalayas climbing no matter what, and even in easy summer hikes you will never see simple footwear. Huge massive backpacks which seem like they are literally doing a multi day hike through the wilderness but in reality day tripping from Tokyo.

I talked to my girlfriend about this once and she sees my view but finds it easy to justify brining all that stuff just because i guess its nice to cook and eat beef wellington on the mountain? It really kills the fun for a lot of hobbies for me where its all just about showing off basically but i thinking hiking and camping are by far the worst effected. Japanese obsession with details can really get out of hand. Sorry if it feels a little ranty, i guess i have become quite disgruntled by this lately.

im not learning from scratch, ive read a lot so this is more to tie up loose ends and answer grammar questions where two of the answers mean the same thing but theres a nuance difference etc.
i can read through and make cards for 1 section in like 30 minutes + 30 minutes-1 hour for the test and understanding my mistakes. but then i go back and re-do the tests every few weeks (enough to hopefully forget the right answers) to until i get a perfect score.
i do this maybe 3 times a week and will probably spend around a year in total on N3-N1 文法 and 読解.

Be honest with me /DJT/... Can I learn Nipponese while woking full-time and a lot of overtime? What sort of schedule should I expect? Ideally I'd like to transfer to a Japanese location with the company I currently work with. Worst case I study some Engrish and become a teacher.
Time isn't a huge factor, but after 4-5 years I probably wouldn't have much to go off of so I'll be dead due to boredom wanting to see mai waifu.

Oh no, I'm someone else, but life can be hard sometimes. It's understandable that some people feel like being alive is pretty sad. But I numb myself with researching things I find interesting, so for me, studying Japanese is my therapy. So long as I can keep improving myself, even if it's petty or hard to use properly right now, then there's hope.

If you're familiar with the CEFR language learning scale, this might be a helpful chart to look at to plan out your progress. This assumes you're working with a teacher or in a class for extended periods each week (it calls it class sessions but it's really like hours per week), and an hour in the classroom with focused learning is worth about 5 hours of independent study time. My recommendation would be to find study resources online that are equivalent to class study, and to vet them thoroughly through other people to ensure their quality. If you can afford proper classroom learning then go for it, particularly if the classes are small and you get raked over the coals to practice speaking and listening. As far as it goes, though, especially with your timeframe, as long as you do a little every day (on lunch breaks, during your commute, before bed, whenever) and put it into practice where you can with reading, listening or practicing communication, you'll see progress.

Because 割 is usually read as "wari" in cases where it's the -masu stem with the "ri" folded into the kanji. You see it with terms like 受付, read as "uketsuke", where the additional syllables are tucked into the kanji to make it easier to write. 分割 is a case where the 割 isn't acting as the verb form, but instead as the kanji by itself using its onyomi reading.

I keep a personal diary where I note down words I learned that day that I found interesting or useful, or puns or expressions that were amusing/explained something I didn't know about before. For example, 最後がおいしいものって、なーんだ?シュウマイ! "What is delicious at the end? Shumai!" The end of shumai is umai, after all. By focusing on what interests me, I keep it interesting. By taking the time to write it in kanji, and noting down places where it might be more common to simplify with hiragana, I can practice my stroke order and handwriting (which is slowly but surely getting better). And by trying to write about daily life, I can spot places where my vocab is lacking or I need to learn new expressions to convey what I want.

Then I go through the hell of handing it to my Japanese friend for him to laugh at. But his feedback is always good and direct, so it works out.

Hello everyone! I've been studying Japanese since mid 2018. I've taken a couple of breaks, but since March of 2020, I have not stopped, and I've studied daily with Anki. I just finished the Tango N3 deck (a monumental task, since it was over 3500 flashcards). I will continue to review it daily, just like I've been doing with the N4 and N5 decks since finishing them several months ago. I also have covered 3000 out of the 10000 words from the Core10k deck and studied my way through Genki I and II and I am doing the same with An Integrated Approach To Intermediate Japanese. I am at around the N3 level (just polishing the grammar part by studying the grammar points from AIATIJ), and I was wondering what the next step was.

Has anyone done the Tango N2 deck to completion?

I bought the first 4 Tango books from the series and got the decks from nuke

(the books by themselves are not quite useful, but with the decks, they're ideal for self-studying), and I already have the N2 deck ready to go, but this one is an even longer commitment at 6500 flashcards).

Also, pro-tip: Amazon.co.jp sells the Tango books for around US$8.00. More than enough to show proof of ownership and get the Anki decks from nuke

. It's cheaper than buying the physical books (Which is what I did at first to show proof of ownership, but subsequently, sold them on eBay and used the money to buy the digital Amazon Kindle versions off of the Japanese Amazon website).

Anyways, I thank you all for your input and take on what to tackle next.

Your next step, most likely, is to throw away all training wheels and dive into media. There's no easy way to make the transition from isolated study to the rough ride that is being thrown curveballs every other page, but the sooner you switch focus from cards to listening practice and reading practice, the better it'll be. Are you making your own Anki cards based on words and phrases you're discovering? If not, I highly recommend doing that. Decks formulated for tests will do exactly as they describe, and prepare you for tests. What they won't prepare you for is the real Japanese language being used in manga, anime, shows, streams and daily conversations. By making your own cards built around the things you're passionate about, you'll keep the fire going but also be able to engage more with the things you already love.

>what kind of job are you even doing?
Easy factory work for the time being. I'd like to get some engineering schooling under my belt too, which would give me knowledge on not only the area I worked, but actual knowledge on improvement, and how things are done in the west. Mind you, I don't expect a cushy position at first, but I'd certainly be qualified for it after a year or so. I have no problem proving myself for a year or two. I figure I'll have enough saved anyway.
>but what is their policy for importing gaijins? do you know of anyone in your company at all that has made this move?
There is a good bit of communication, but there is no direct transfers. I fully intend to bother whoever I have to, but again, I don't mind an entry level job. I'm confident in my abilities on the global scale. My recorded performance in the past has proven as much reaching an international level with little effort.
If nothing else, I want to be able to visit Suwa Taishi regularly.
