This thread is for anything related to the discussion of Japanese light novels, WN / Web Novels included.
Learning Japanese to avoid mistakes and subtext trimming by translators and MTL is heavily recommended.

Even if the anime adaptation flops in the worst possible way it's not going to affect the original novels much.
Manga adaptations flop and get axed all the time, it hardly affects the source material.
Anime adaptations like infinite dendrogram, arifureta, etc, are terrible and flop all the time, but the source novel still goes on strong.
If an author quits writing over something like that, then the novel didn't have much of a future either way, if not the anime flopping any other big thing would have caused them to quit.

Is there still no news about Log Horizon at all? We're almost at the 2-year mark since the last anime now. Would be weird not to capitalize on current isekai boom, knowing most of the popular Narou series are finishing, and we'll probably get another genre shift within 3 years.
>>41675724
>infinite dendrogram
Too soon man. Next chance for a remake would be in like at least ~30 years, of which an actual Dendro game should (hopefully) be finished. At least they perfectly failed to adapt the least autistic arc throughout the series, which means there will never be any second season. Stripped all out of its autism, it should've still been able to achieve a minor success as a (fake) battle-fantasy/vrmmorpg series with a proper budget, though not to a normalfag/memeable degree like Danmachi since there's barely (if any) eyecandy at all. If only HJ's not too hasty in finding Rokujouma's replacement, fuck.

ミモザの告白 is pretty good, series. MC's childhood friend comes out as trans and the series deals with how that changes general social and specific relationships between characters. What I especially like is how it most characters have different but valid viewpoints and opinions. Dialogues aren't really MC or his friend trying to convince everyone else to share their viewpoint but actual conversations among characters with different set of values. I also like how the series likes to challenge the MC's views.

わたしはあなたの涙になりたい - stand alone, This year's Gagaga Award winner. About MC and his friendship with a genius girl pianist. Quite moving, very deliberately written, in some aspects it reads more like something that wouldn't be published under LN label (long passage of time, thematic focus, etc).

竜殺しのブリュンヒルド - Runner up on Dengeki Award. Family drama tragedy set i a fantasy setting inspired by Nordic/Germanic legends and saga. Begins with a tragedy, then keeps spiralling to the very bottom of despair; yet the taste of revenge is irresistible. The story is stand-alone but there is a prequel set I guess hundreds of years before this book being published in a few days.

砂の上の1DK - Kareno's new book, developed as stand-alone but he mentioned he might write a spin-off if things go well. Security specialist protag gets involuntary involved in industrial espionage incident that forces him to live in hiding together with his former home-tutoring student whose body has become a container for unknown parasite that boosts body recovery powers but takes over the body of its host. Similar topic as sukasuka with a person being attacked by a sense of becoming a stranger to her own body.

Quite enjoyed these.

I envy your optimism but even in-universe that wasn't doable, despite all the technological advances the story clearly spells out it's only possible due to ayylmaos.
And honestly the way games are going, being stripped of all complexity and having increasingly buggier releases, even 200 years may be an optimist estimate, assuming humanity even lasts that long in this world.

Could you elaborate more on your second question? Haven't read SAO past GGO for several reasons so I wouldn't know the term, but if you meant is there something in Dendro resembling Heaven/Hell, simulacra of the dead, or straight up transfer of consciousness ala Baldr Sky in the game world then technically yes, it does exist.

Heavy spoiler, beware. The VRMMO game in Dendro is an actual universe/world with its own set of laws that got hijacked by Ayyyylmaos in order to spread more of its kind. Which means everything that exists in the real world potentially exists in the game, including angels, demons, spirit/souls, brain in a jar, working Skynet AI, etc.

If you want some solid sci-fi that does allocate a lot of time to exploration of its setting and does crazy things with it I wholeheartedly recommend 筺底のエルピス. It's more about her giving in to her cursed womb-tattoo when ravished by various manly men. No monsters so far but I'm not that far into it so who knows.

completely disagree
most ln adaptations use like 3 eps for one volume
that's like an hour of runtime, for an entire volume, and that alone should tell you how much has to necessarily be cut in order to fit it in an anime - because if you were to read that shit out loud like in an audiobook, you'll have a runtime somewhere between 6-10 hours depending on the novel
so even if it *was* a script like you're saying you would have to cut the vast, vast majority of lines
i don't see how you could possibly claim it's still the same experience

Try 負けヒロインが多すぎる! it's pretty funny. Just note that MC isn't really the love interest nor much interested in love. It's more about how losing heroines are gathering around him for some reason, so he tries to help them to overcome the failed love and while doing that he himself is learning how to be more sociable.

I hate these sorts of beginner lists, it treats the reader like a retard.
And don't get me wrong, it's fine if you're a retard, but the solution is not to read simpler stuff, it's to have the patience to read at a rate of one page per hour.

correct, that's why i'm against recommending actual cartoons for 5-year-olds or graded readers

That's not how scripts work.
I'm not disagreeing with your conclusion, but your argument is bullshit.

Those are two completely different mediums.
To accurately describe how a duel between two characters plays out, you can easily spend a paragraph per tempo (action in a fight). It's not hard.
But a tempo, in video, can take less than a second.
Now, when it comes to combat, anime usually fills up space with posturing and repetition. My point is not that anime does fights wrong. My point is that a paragraph (which takes several seconds to read out) is suddenly equivalent to less than a second in an animated medium.
You cannot equate the time required to transmit a particular set of information between different mediums. They just work very differently.

I know there are plenty of places for self-publishing novels and web novels for Japanese people, but is there a similar one for the west? A decent one for me to publish my own "light novels" in English?
I'm talking a mainly otaku-oriented platform with a growing community. All those shitty western platforms you usually get recommended online are for either YA or smut aimed at women. Nothing of value to be found there. And Fanfiction.net is just for fanfiction as the name says.
I don't even want to become popular or anything; will probably even upload my stuff anonymously. But I want it to be somewhere where there's like-minded individuals.

So long as you define your interests as coming from a particular country (or people), it's pretty hard to build a community dedicated to creating such content despite not being part of the defined origin space.
To a degree, the weeb is inherently a self-contradictory and "ironic" being.

how often do you end up finding the WN version before the LN version or manga adaptation?
even if you read both, which do you read first, the WN or LN?

>> No.41790333

>>41790130
Usually I find the WN version of something first or it's the manga first then I check if there's a WN or LN.
If the LN only has a couple volumes out then I skip it and read the WN only but if it's something that has only a WN and LN then usually I'll read WN first and then LN.

I remember reading this way back then and thinking it was mediocre, now much later I can read japanese to a decent level and gave it a try again, reading the raws this time, and the difference is like night and day, definitively a top 10 for me personally, really looking forward to volume 5 even if I'm a slow reader and I'm barely on volume 2.
