How prominent are the Yakuza in Japan these days?

How dangerous is Tokyo in general?

Are rural areas peaceful and quiet or even more dangerous as is often the case in other countries (unexpectedly)?

What do you mean by "dangerous"? The Yaukuza aren't street thugs that roam around and beat you up for your wallet. They're like the Mafia, an organized crime organization that does things out of the spotlight.

That said they're still very prominent in Japan, with some of the syndicates with members numbering tens of thousands of members.
