Is there Japanese->English translation software out there that does a significantly better job than Babelfish?

>> No.411179

ATLAS has more configuration options, but as for quality of translation, no.

>> No.411183

no. its litereal translations. Itll probably cost a bit of money for a program that can take japanese grammer and convert it to english grammer, if such a program exsists.

Meh, it may seem that way, but it's not very good.
Observe:
私も魚は食べます
This means 'I also eat if it's fish'
Instead, you get 'The fish eats me'

Just install the TakaJun plugin for firefox. It's much better than Rikaichan. The only problem is the installer...

Are you just spitting out random stuff from the translatng sites? Because the grammar is all messed up.
Listen up. You're never going to find the perfect translating site. This is because translating sites are made by people who like laughing at your painfully messed up pen pal letter or youtube comment.
>>私もはしを魚を食べます
>>I also eat chopsticks and chopsticks eats fish.
You're using を twice, which you shouldn't do unless you're using します.
>>私もはしに魚を食べます
>>Chopsticks and I also eat the fish.
Considering it has はし with に it sounds like 'I also eat fish for chopsticks'
>>私もはしで魚は食べます
>>The fish eats me with chopsticks.
By chopsticks, I also eat if it's fish.
>>私もはしで魚が食べます
>>The fish eats me with chopsticks. (confirm tone)
I also eat fish by chopsticks (although the が sounds weird...)

>Are you just spitting out random stuff from the translatng sites?

Yes.

>> No.414654

Translation sites yield useful, understandable text only when the sentence structure is fairly close to the source language.

With languages like Japanese, where each sentence can be reworded in multiple ways by shuffling around the subject, direct object, time, location, etc, it's harder to get an accurate translation.

This isn't even mentioning how machine translators stumble over more complicated styles of writing (prose in literature), or just plain old long-winded sentences.

tl;dr Best way: Learn some basic Japanese grammar and then let Rikaichan do the rest.

>> No.416115

>>414654

Yea. It is very useful to know at least some basics to determine how accurate a translation ended up. But there are also so many confusing things that are hard to tell.

Like for example:
いいな

As far as I can tell it means envious, but it could also just be いい for good, and the な just being there like ね.

At least that is what I get out of eow.alc.co.jp.
