playing as the boss in a touhou game wouldn't be feasible from a gameplay standpoint

I mean you just sit there and activate your spellcard and wait and hope you don't run out of HP or time before your enemy screws up and accidentally gets hit by one of your bullets

High school trigonometry is all you need. The meat of it comes from making the bullet sources move, spin, change according to wave functions (like wobble back and forth via a sine wave, or add angle modulated by one like Border of Wave and Particle), and do other fancy things. And having bullets that can have code act on them after they're fired (for changing direction, velocity, angle acceleration, spawning new bullets, etc etc). Having variables that you can modify and plug into various bullet actions is a must, too.

So it's really not the math so much as all the scripting shit.
