What's the max amount of new words one could conceivably learn to good degree in a day?

So far my routine is:

0.) do 30 new anki cards from previous day's reading
1.) read novel (the literary kind - not VN's or light novels).
2.) come across unknown word
3.) put it into kanji
4.) once I have 30 - stop

I have unlimited time and right now only care about reading.

Using anki, and setting my interval rate really low, could I bump that up to say 50? Or is that just totally unreasonable?

Currently I’m studying at my own pace, trying to translate VN with the help of DeepL and retranscribe all the new kanji i see and dismantle them into hiragana and then into sounds (romaji) + writing down the definition. Also doing Duolingo. And i also have Genki 1 and 2 but i stopped super early on since there was too many “group activities “ that are pretty hard to do alone xD

Genuinely curious: what are your thoughts on the Duolingo Japanese course? Obviously I don't think it's useful in the slightest for learning anything but the most basic grammar, but as a tool for being introduced to the kana and some basic vocabulary it doesn't seem to bad.

Been using it for the last month or so in conjunction with a Tango N5 Anki deck. Doesn't feel like a total waste of time even if the ads are annoying.

RTK is not very useful, but if you want to do it, download the modified RRTK deck from tatsumoto's guide.
All "Core" Anki decks are based on newspapers from early 90s and sometimes additionally sorted in a way that makes learning harder. The cards format also tends to be WCC instead of a more efficient TSC. Ankidrone Starter Pack is made from a COMPLETELY different corpus, everyday words used commonly in Japan. You should use Ankidrone Starter Pack.

imo core decks are usually shit because they take "most used words" without context, which are meaningless in most situations, while leaving out extremely common words and expressions used out in everyday conversations.
The improved 2.3k core (which I think is the one you linked) is indeed improved, because it solves the discrepancy of the above, while offering a bit more in terms of memory retention like pictures and etc.

I do suggest you try that, but!, as an addendum that I wish I had done earlier, individual kanji study goes a long way and its better being done before looking at the core decks as you will have an easier time distinguishing before fairly similar looking kanji and words. I've been using the wanikani deck for that, and its been good so far.
Additionally looking up grammar also goes a good way before diving into vocab decks, you can ease up into it and do a bit of both things at the same, of even a grammar deck that gives small bits a time.

I used it until I got my 100 day streak and then I started looking for other options as I could never recognize and differentiate kanji I've already seen before. Also, you might get some repetition on vocab but it simply doesn't replace a spaced repetition system, so I stopped using it. The exercises are also too easy, but it was fun to get started before I went on to use more serious methods. Is RTK 3 worth it? I just finished RTK 1 and can recognize almost all the kanji I come across, although there are still a few unknowns I encounter. So part of me wants to keep on grinding kanji until I finish, but on the other hand I feel like I have a good foundation to start seriously doing grammar and vocab.
