I guess with everything in mind, limiting it to 5 works can feel rather small. I did have a no nonsense approach to it and just put in my Top 5 games, although I love certain music CDs quite a bit. It feels like the majority of franchises either end up with fans of this mentality or the other extreme. There's lots of games lately where the reboots earn the series a lot of new fans, and that for them defines the series, but for something like Touhou characters from the first ~5 Windows games will always be popular because they're so well-established and already have a lot of content. EoSD in particular has always stayed relevant and gets a special level of love as the first Windows game.

I love the Aki sisters, but I can't help to think that they are helped by the timing of the poll. They're probably on everyone's mind right now.

It's just a lot of characters from newer games only ever have had a single appearance then never get brought up again. If it was as simple as old thing good then letty, wriggle, and the prismrivers wouldn't be so far down it is just they only ever appeared once and then rarely are mentioned or referenced again beyond background cameos. But then look at Yuuma who in their first poll did decently well just cause their game was recent, give it time though and if they are never mentioned or referenced they will fall off hard in a couple polls too. The more characters there are in touhou the more characters there are that are not appearing in things so that trend hits newer characters harder.

It seems poor Sannyo is destined to the bottom. Only 6 votes away from Nemuno. I'm sure they enjoy each other's company, and Nemuno was able to hold a thread on her own in /jp/, so ultimately, it's not that bad.

Over 50% of voters got into touhou from 2014 onwards.
Over 50% of the voters were 19 or younger.
Hidden Star in Four Seasons was the game most voters haven't played.
The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil was the game most voters have played.
1/3 of voters don't care about the games.

Seems like newer, younger fans are more interested in older touhous, which is why characters from EoSD and PCB have all gone up in ranks, except for Daiyousei, Lyrica Prismriver and Youmu, though every character that overtook Youmu is even older than her. Also, 1/3 of voters know only about characters that get a lot of exposure, meaning older, established characters as well as characters from the latest game.
So, there are three voter groups: players that know all characters and can vote for any (though they probably will vote more for high exposure characters), casuals that will give most of their votes to high exposure characters, and newer players that only know about older characters. How it ends up is that older, established characters have a huge advantage, while minor, older characters have and advantage over minor, newer characters. Also, important characters from newer (but not newest) games, such as Keiki or Chimata, fall because most of their votes came from casuals that voted for them when they were current. They stop falling after a while, if you check characters from LoLK or HsiFS their ranks are mostly stable when compared to last year.

I think that issue is that we reached a feedback loop with touhou.
A younger fans are well...zoomers who are easily influenced and generally need to be spoonfeed, while not looking for things themselves. Because of that they will mostly interact only with part of fandom that someone else. This makes their experience very hermetic and is the reason why so many of them know only about popular things (Fumos, Heart-throbbing adventure etc).
Then they become "veteran" fans and influence more people essentially continuing the loop.
When i talk to people im often surprised that dedicated fans never heard about things like "Advent Cirno" "Night sparrow in love" "Tag dream" and many other works that i consider to be essential for touhou. They are completely unfamiliar with classic artists like Morito Hon or Millet soup. And thats because noone pointed them to those things.
They basically lock themselves in the small loop of repeated memes and few popular characters. This results in those characters to have even more attention from artists which makes problem even worse.

Even outside of memes and fan-content, for the other 2/3 there is the simple truth that a lot of players who will get into the franchise now will naturally think "Where do I start?", see that EoSD is the first Windows game and go from there. And if they end up falling in love with the franchise, it will have to have been early on for them to even stick around enough to play the later games, meaning that if they fall in love with the series it will have a high chance of being when they play the early games.

That's why when that question comes, I first answer that the series is fairly consistent overall, before engaging with some common entry points. If i'm feeling through I might mention unique points about entries I like. Want a sense of experimentation with each run? Try UM. Want a good beginner entry that eases you in through relatively simple patterns rather than a huge amount of ressources, letting you engage with more of the game instead of skipping it with bombs? Try TD. You can make arguments for every game.
I am of the opinion that even at its most gimmicky, no Touhou game is that overwhelming as long as you're willing. In fact, the strongest source that may dissuade one over that small time frame is difficulty, which is why I rank 11, 12 and 15 slightly lower as beginner entries (Might fit for a certain crowd especially with PD in 15 helping practice if you're wiling to endure a bit of bashing against the wall)
No matter the title, most beginners will go through roughly the same hardships: First struggles in Stage 2, getting tougher in Stage 3, big stage spike and likely roadblocked in Stage 4, needing to practice, facing more hurdles in the later stages, trying to avoid bleeding ressources in the first 3 stages, and losing your 1cc virginity. Might as well have it be to Miko, Kanako or Keiki instead of Remilia all the time.

I'm not saying I can't, though I fucking suck and have only 1cc'd MoF and IN on normal, I'm saying that if people vote the very least they could do is at least try the games for a bit before the usual difficulty spike. I know secondaries will be secondaries but its just depressing to see people taking time out of their day to vote for something literally more than half of them have never touched.

The poll is about popularity and open to everyone. Even people who never touched a touhou game and only know a bit about touhou from browsing the internet know about Reimu, Marisa and EoSD characters. If you think about it that way, what's actually surprising is that Cirno is not the winner.
That said, it sucks that we can't filter through the raw data to check what people who have actually played the games have voted, as this info would be more interesting for actual touhou fans.
