that's just not true. every time you think about it, the connection will be reinforced so that the retrieval is faster the next time. you can try to prove this wrong yourself, but the fact is you'll never be physically able to keep recalling something without the retrieval becoming quicker and quicker, no matter how hard you try to remain slow.
>>41241782
you will learn, but it might not be the fastest way. answering too quickly most likely ultimately wastes time too, but there's no way of telling what "too quickly" means without conducting some very in-depth experiments, so you should just do whatever feels best long-term.

Starting from the fact that I've always thought I was pretty decent at japanese, started learning 3 years ago, may of 2019, passed the N2 last year summer of 2021 with a very good 164/180 score, thought I could probably ace the N1 pretty easily the last months. Until today.

I tried to read a Visual Novel (fate stay night) which I was really intereated in and it opened my eyes, where to start. I literally couldn't understand half of what I was "reading", or trying to read, holy shit, I google translated 2/3 sentences because of weird grammar and stupie sentence structure, and oh my god, so many new kanji and words as well, I thought I had mastered them and that I was almost done with it, but no, in about an hour, before I gave up, I mined more than 100 words and like a third of them had kanji I had never seen, like, yeah, I still find new kanji sometimes but not dozens of them like that, what the fuck. I know about 2000 kanji I'd say at this point but after checking the internet apparently around ~3000 is the amount the average educated japanese person knows. Holy shit. No no no no no. And they are complicated as fuck.

This experience opened a new world to me. There's so many layers of japanese. I spent time with anime, manga, some easier light novels, could read some news and social media posts and was just overall enjoying myself until I realized how far actual native level fluency still was. I never understood everything 100% of course, don't get me wrong, but it felt like I wasn't struggling too much. I don't know what to think. People told me that I probably wasn't as good as I thought I was. Do I really know anything even. In reality I can't even watch or read most shonen and seinen like Hunter X Hunter, Berserk, One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen etc. yet without looking up sentences or a couple of words per episode/chapter. I mostly enjoy fighting series but they're so damn hard with philosophy and attacks and tactics and yoji and proverbs and super casual terms and shit. I thought I was still decent because I could get the gist of them but welp, I was just lying to myself.

Are ~10-15 hours a week, 1~3 hours daily of immersing and anki really not enough. I've done that for literally years already, how many more to go to be able to enjoy everything I want in japanese without it feeling like a pain. They told me that anything below 4~5h hours was barely anything if I wanted to reach native fluency, a kid learns a language through constant input throughout the day for like 7-8 years before reaching actual fluency but like, I'm not 3 year old, it should be easier for an adult, right? 5h+ a day is fucking crazy, is that what it really takes to learn a completely different foriegn language? Because we're basically starting from 0, like a newborn, so I guess what they told me was true. The only completely fluent foreigners I know are Matt vs Japan and Dogen, who've spent literally half of their lives learning it without breaks, is THAT what it takes? I guess many would be happy with my level but I want to understand and enjoy everything I want like I do in english, THAT is my goal. I don't know, I just don't know what to say. I just want this LEARNING PART of my journey to end already.

For me it was the weaaboo cringe compilations on youtube, all the weaaboos in general, the retards using memes and phrases taken from anime and using them wrong, the people that said it sounded like Spanish ( which it doesn't) I had to spend hours researching about Japanese phonetics and found out that all the vowels while being similar are slightly different from Spanish with the "u" being very different and plus Spanish doesnot have long vowels and neither does it have the h,z,v,w,tsu, tzu,sh,j,dji sounds + it doesnt have double consonants nor does it have pitch accent and I might be forgetting about other stuff, the people that say it sounds like spanish are retards that have only studied spanish such as burgers and bongs or spanish speakers themselves. What they should actually be saying is that it is a flat language Swahili is also a flat language yet no one compares it with filthy Spanish but the thing that has made me want to quit the language the most was seeing a disgusting tranny speaking it on a youtube documentary also some stupid green haired weaaboo bitch that appeared on one of yutas videos and a stupid cunt that has a youtube channel and speakss like 10 languages once started talking japanese in the most disgusting manner ever like if she was trying to seem cutesyn or wathever but it was insuferable and revolting. Women should not be allowed to learn Japanese my blood boils with rage whenever I see a non asian woman saying she is learning that language.

tfw reading has nothing to do with fluency

ROOM 1: a girl is watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and laughing her ass off when Cameron kicks his dad’s sports car out the window, and crying softly when Sloane says “He’s gonna marry me…” She wipes a tear away and throws a tissue into the trashcan next to her collection of Weezer and Green Day CDs. She is doing this instead of her ESL homework. Her grades will suffer, but she doesn’t care about that boring stuff. She has huge breasts.

ROOM 2, a guy is clicking away at an Anki deck of soundless words and sentences. Great! 90% correct! He finishes, then gets out a grammar worksheet and begins to quietly fill in the blanks. He finishes by taking a practice TOEIC test. Wow! 100%! He truly is becoming a master of English!

Who is becoming fluent at English? Based on my Real Life(TM) encounters with Russians, Germans, Italians, Koreans, Japanese, and so many other people here in this bustling Asian mega-cities, I now say with the utmost confidence that the girl in ROOM 1 is getting fluent, and the guy in ROOM 2 is not (although he will get a good TOEIC score and make an excellent Samsung wage slave). Adapting the old “I know porn when I see it” argument, I am hereby declaring fluency to be more closely related to audio than to text, because I’ve seen the results.

Question is, how high is you retention rate, and do you really retain it?

That's where mnemonic kinda help out.
Also, there seems to be some people who do cards with only readings instead of kanji, I feel like people need to state it out, otherwise it feels like cheating.

>>41242670
>but ive come to the opinion that the opportunity cost spent on thinking about each card for 10 to 20 seconds is bigger than the potential returns
I think 10 seconds is still short enough, but I do agree that just looking at a card for 30 seconds is not gonna do anything either. So what I started doing instead, is that I looked up the word in a jisho, and looked up the individual kanji and radicals to see I could find any sense in that, specially useful for troublesome words with the same kanji, or kanji where you have very similar radicals.
Bashing through hitting "again" like a hammer may work, but this way I was actively engaging my brain, and words that took like 10 times and barely stick for a couple of days, only take like a couple times now.
Even the other fag in the reply chain admits that a alternative form of study is beneficial.

for the last category i think looking things up and seeing a good image/clip/use of the word is the best thing to do
>re time
i always try to keep in mind that the ultimate objective is being able to listen and read japanese as fast as i can on a different language, and from that perspective, pausing for a couple seconds every word would not cut it, not in conversation and not in reading
its not something i stress over too much, but i do keep it in mind, you can only perform the way you train, and i think its good to try and make things harder every time, to consciously try to improve
im not saying tell anyone to fail at 6 seconds flat, especially if they are starting out, thats ludicrous, the spirit is more "lets try and do it better every time"

I have an amazing idea. What if i got a bluetooth brain electrode device with an application to Anki so it tracks when i’m learning, goofing off etc. And then i take the dataset and i can use it and feed it into an AI to develop a system to optimize my learning. I can implement changes to my lifestyle and test out of it improves my learning accurately if i have an algoritm that can read my brain and estimate how much i’m focused, and how much my brain is giving off learning signals etc. I can even make a formula where i put in sleeping hours, food consumption and other shit and it will give me s graph of how well it does for example. There is so much power in this. I can even compare other decks and shit easily.

Hi, I decided to do a recent artwork from pixiv here and get some feedback/learn more.

[LITERAL]久しぶりっ + 10か月ぶりく…だね

(1)"It's been a while(since we last met)", this could be rewritten in English in so many ways. I chose the words I chose based on demeanor of the character in the image speaking it (smiling, close to viewer).

The っis just a kind of trailing off on the last syllable. Honestly, with this trailing at this point and the expression of the characters, it makes me think they're smart and trying to manipulate me in some way.
(2)This is a less formal way of writing 10ヶ月. I'm not sure how to adjust the translation for this but the lazier version could have no real translatable meaning but I would think it would.
Maybe just wanting to appear more childish and less authoritative like a calendar talking to you.

(3) ぶり after a stated time period, in this case, is just restating that it's been awhile. So instead of saying "It's been awhile, 10 months." The addition of buri again makes it "It's been awhile, it's been 10 months (since last time)

くらい - is "about (amount)". used after time commonly, pretty simple and easy.

(4)だね is common, nothing special. だ is declarative, especially alone. ね is like "huh?" as in a "don't you think so" kind of way, not confusion. Putting these two together, I think, can be interpreted as wanting to be like ("I know this but I'm not trying to sound like a teacher or something").

Or maybe "it is, don't you know?"

Trailing off to a だね (use of …), not sure how to adjust the translation here except just adding a trailing off in the English as well.

-part 2 (next bubble) in next post- getting a drink and I'll start on it

[LITERAL] 短い間だけど 今年もよろしくねっ

(1)短い means short (as in 'brief')
(2)間 (ま) short + time = short time (woah!)
(3)だけど (however); notice it doesn't naturally fit translated as however in this instance and makes complete sense for it to instead be translated as "even though"

Even though it's been a short time (since we have met again), yoroshiku. and a nice little ne at the end too.
translate yoroshiku however you want I don't care

Yes, but some media (like VNs) are much more text heavy. For two beginners at the same level, manga will always be easier.
Since I chose to not read manga because it bothers me how little everything looks in raw the options left for reading would be VNs and LNs, and I suppose VNs are easier, right? I guess it's better for me just to endure it, it's not like it's easy anyway.

yes, assuming you choose something with a similar "level of speech" vns are easier than lns because well you have voices which help with making things comprehensible.
the best beginner material however is jp-subbed anime because everything is voiced, you have little narration which tend to be the hardest lines in vns and make up a huge percentage of their text usually, and you have moving pictures to help with comprehensibility

They do. That's why it's so common for Japanese people to just respond to you in English even if you try talking to them in Japanese.
It's because it's less painful for them to just do that than it is for them to try and decipher your awful fucking accent.
