Why are young Japanese boys obsessed with bugs and beetles in general?

>> No.41238920

That's 1 of the symptoms of high-functioning autism. Autists have extreme obsessions with collecting, listing and organizing. Take the creator of Pokemon, Satoshi Tajiri, for example. He's a diagnosed autist whose childhood hobby included collecting bugs. It gave him the inspiration for Pokemon. Coincidentally, ZUN, creator of Touhou Project, also admits to collecting and organizing bugs. Of course this doesn't only apply to bug catching.

This.
Back in the day I would bang on trees with sticks.
Walk around by 5 acre property and go beyond it and find a little creek. Take an easel and paint the mountain that is right there. Walk into a field and weird spider things start crawling all over your feet!

Fun biology secret knowledge: if you desperately want to name a species after yourself (or someone you hold dear), make your way to a random part of the Amazon, discharge a canister of carbon dioxide up at a tree while you have a net in place, and catch some bugs! Take the greatest quantity of a certain type of bug, do some basic documentation of morphology (external anatomy, like body shape, number of legs, etc). Submit these results to a university and you have your own species! Wriggle can finally be her own official, legal species

The appeal is that they're weird and gross. Deep sea animals have a similar appeal but are harder to access than bugs.
