But I think the sheer amount of time it takes to learn an Asian language as a non-Asian makes it a bad idea. Eventually, probably fairly soon, you reach a point where you understand enough Japanese to realise that most translations suck.
This is a real difficult barrier. Im trying to read Todai for example to practise my reading but half the time the translations are poorly done and dont make sense, but I dont understand them enough myself to provide an accurate alternative

So I try to read manga and look up the English translations when I don't understand something but thats even worse because most of the time they just take the general sentiment of a sentence and translate that, instead of accurately translating it

I have spent a lot of time reading in Japanese and studying new words I come across, a little over 80 manga volumes and novels down. Something I frequently notice when I pay attention to how I'm feeling as I read and study, is how breathtakingly beautiful the language looks to me.

The kanji, both complex and simple forms, that tickle my brain's love of pattern-recognition with their similar elements re-arranged in new ways. Hiragana with their playful, looped and curved appearance. Katakana with their almost futuristic-looking, angular forms.

All of it put together to make meaning.

Sometimes I have to just give myself a few moments to appreciate how pretty the text looks, before diving into the actual story.

Can anyone else relate to this feeling?

ok and? You're not gonna learn grammar in 5 weeks. It takes thousands of hours of immersing to get good (ex. little kids). It might not even be a noticeable growth, stop trying to rush things. Just try and pick out as many phrases and words as you can. You'll gradually get better with time.

I've read for 2hr 28mins today (私の隣のブッソーさん, good) and I didn't understand even most of the page. I looked up a word(s) on almost every single page (excluding no word pages). There are going to be countless words you don't know for a while. Mining should help you a lot if you're not already doing it.

You can't skip out on immersion and nothing good will come from it, you'll wish you started reading sooner down the road sooner or later. Just read/skim a grammar guide like Tae Kim (finish it in a month at most) and do reading and listening.

the difference in enjoyment of stuff in japanese vs translated isn't high enough to warrant the time investment. unfortunately i was never interested in VNs and that's pretty much the only area where there aren't translations for basically everything. with the thousands of hours ive spent on this i could have learned 3 other languages not to mention skills that would make me money and shit.

Depends on what content you're coonsuming, but doing for shitty VNs only its definitely not worth it.
You could do translator work, or better yet, move to japan where even the cheapest アルバイト can get you better living conditions than anywhere else in the world.
For me it would be an array of stuff, from eroge, to manga, anime, music, and real life. And the fact that I tend to enjoy stuff that usually isn't as catchy in the otaku world. And also the fact that I've been to Japan in the past and actually seen how its like.
