If I were to learn the Japanese language, I would probably go about learning the Japanese words first before the Japanese characters/letters, maybe a bit of both. After learning some words and phrase formation, I would watch Japanese TV shows like AKBingo Goodbye Mouri-san, and bit by bit try to understand the conversation. And then write a story in Japanese words but alphanumeric. And that would be my learning loop.

So to start off, i started learning japanese at home and ive been studying on and off for two years, i currently know around 100 words from the book genki. But i feel like im learning but not learning at the same time.

There are times where i would just stop studying for months at a time. I use to study every day for at least 6 to 8 hours so i think i get burned out, and i dont remember that it is my goal to learn. I use Hellotalk and line to talk to some native japanese speakers. But my issue is, how can i make myself keep studying, should i shorten my hours? To maybe like 30 minutes a day?

Also i want to add, when i study i just keep rewritting and i dont think its very satisfying, i used flash cards and quizlet but i notice those words dont stick in my head. I also started wani kana about two days ago to start learning kanji.

Does any one have any tips for me? Studying habits, how to make myself to continue to do study japanese.

I also tried reading a sentence aloud to a Japanese friend, he couldnt understand what i was saying. I can read kana, but the way I'm speaking, I'm not cutting certain words or phrases when I should. What I mean by that is in Japanese you know at the end of the sentence when asking someone a question DESKA, we say deska and not the written desuka. That's the issue I am having.

I know how to say all the kana, but i think when its put together its harder.

It checks out, it will seem daunting at first, but the only way to mastering it is practice and immersion.
I'm not sure about the ankidrone deck, I've heard mixed things about it too, but for the kanji transition, its definitely a good one with lots of fairly common everyday usage.
The core 6k is a bit of a meme, its definitely something worth of having under your belt, but I think its far too formal a detached from what is regularly used in common conversation, so its more grindy for a first deck.
One thing I don't see mentioned often, is that you can definitely study more than one deck at the same time, specially if they similar and you have the time to throw in, they act like supporting study and you can the same thing in different contexts, maybe fonts, and forms.

Anon that's retarded, why would you study multiple decks instead of one deck and reading? if the decks have the same words and different formats you are doing redundant work and wasting your time, if they have different words, then its really just one deck
The tango decks and all his shit are sentence cards and use the premise you can learn japanese from n+1 decks. That is not completely wrong, you can, but its more time consuming, harder, and less useful/practical than just immersing in stuff your level and getting the same from there PLUS myriad other words which you end up absorbing naturally
Seeing words you don't quite understand yet increases your familiarity with them nonetheless
Plus if you have good memory you memorize the sentences in the sentence decks before you understand the underlying meaning, making them useless.

If you are immersing, you probably already notice you pick up words you weren't trying to, from context/just seeing them everywhere.
The more you progress the more that happens and eventually itll dwarf the words in the decks themselves/what you can pick up from them, is all.

But that's exactly the goal here, being redudant to really internalize the different words in their forms and meanings, getting familiar with it. And as I said, its only something to do if you really have the time to throw in studying japanese.

>That is not completely wrong, you can, but its more time consuming, harder, and less useful/practical than just immersing in stuff your level and getting the same from there PLUS myriad other words which you end up absorbing naturally
Again this supposed to be at the very beginner stage (which can be from 6 to 12 months), where reading anything at all would be too much of a hassle because you had to look up literally every single word. In this case, your suggested method is a huge waste of time, because you're easily spending 10~15 minutes per page in reasonably easy manga, its the same as mashing your head with a book till the blood smeared pages start making sense.
The exception of this is Tadoku, which is very much recommended as well, but one method does not exclude the other. As long the student isn't burning himself out, which is very unlikely to happen because it will be a lot easier to go through, as opposed to for example core6k or punching through raw manga, its up to the student if he has the time to devote.

Looks like this is a fun manga to read, I remember the reference.
But is it better to start out with the anime or manga, feels like anime with subtitles would be better because of the speaking to help follow that internal reading along.

>a lot of people were reading before 6 months (me included) and im the most retarded person here
But how did people here (and you) got to reading before six months? Did you just bash through trying to read intermediary manga looking up every single thing, and did literally only that?
Probably not (and if anyone did just that please say it), you had a few basic words under you belt first, you had a basic idea of grammatical structure first, you had a little experience of how speaking sounds first, you probably went through a core deck of whatever till you had enough.
My point is that every time I hear this argument when some completely newb asks about it, you're just telling them to drop whatever deck (in this case TSC) and jump straight into reading when they barely got familiar with just reading kana.

that's what reading real material is for
>very beginner stage (which can be from 6 to 12 months), where reading anything at all would be too much of a hassle because you had to look up literally every single word
you don't need to look up literally every single word. you can scan for words and patterns you've already seen and try to recall approximately what they mean, look up one or two words that look approachable, and if you can't get any further just look at the translated subtitle to keep context and move on to the next sentence.
also your time frame is greatly exaggerated. after 12 months of just 1 hour a day you'll be able to read a lot of lines of an easy vn or a lot of pages of an easy manga with 0 to a few lookups. very far from having to look up "literally every single word". unless you put off reading like a redditor, then maybe you won't

"flow and musicality" aren't very relevant when you're learning baby level basics. you should definitely do some listening on the side where you focus specifically on getting familiar with the general sound of the language, but caring about it specifically during initial reading practice where the absolute priority should be to acquire basic vocabulary, grammar and kana reading speed ASAP to bootstrap yourself is a waste of mental energy

>which can be from 6 to 12 months
Well my example I mentioned that as max for the time frame.
I guess the discussion came from bashing on TSC.
My point is that using additional deck with the same beginner stuff helps, like for example using a regular word card format, and then another one with sentence cards, one helps internalizing the other, and whatever helps you internalize stuff is help you internalize stuff.
Like its been said before, there is no "right" method and it goes with whatever method absorbs the language better for the learner. My point was not to get stuck on only 1 deck or one method, you're not learn nihongo by bashing through cards and not reading at all, but you're also not gonna learn it by just trying to read without bashing through some vocab first either.

anon, weve all been where you are, reading wont get easier until you bash your face against it quite a bit, you can postpone it as much as you want, but itll suck no matter how many cards youve done
real language has an underlying message or narrative to convey, cards do not, words on cards are different from words in the wild.
when i made my amazon jp account a while ago, i could read every word in the page but i wanted to cry because i was no less lost than if i couldn't, it was annoying and frustrating as fuck
the underlying logic of things is very important and its lacking in cards, and you also have to get used to the glymps being just normal, not strange or alien or special, that said, do whatever you want, unlike tatsucuckhold i have no patreon or stake in anything
for the record i do cards, but only really ones i mine
good luck anon

imo anime cards (coomer edition) for vocab, and sentence cards for grammar. if you end up memorizing the grammar sentence and can regurgitate it before reading the whole thing, no big deal, it's grammar. actually, good on you.

Wait, which Tango deck are you talking about? So you didn't actually both decks, right?
I just tried out importing both TSC and WCC from Tatsumoto, and apparently it can't be done, something about them being the same id but different templates or something, makes sense.
I also don't know if I did anything wrong, but if Ankidrone and Tango are the same thing, it feels like either the order is very screwed up or the included words aren't relevant at all.

The separation of subdecks by test level can be useful, but only for those who need to take the test.
The transition decks are nice though, a lot of consistency and actual everyday expressions.

Either way, I've read both, started with itazuraneko, they're both fine and point to similar resources. In the nip spelling all of of: angel, emperor, nature.
Are fairly common usage, and in meaning, you had to stretch quite a bit, like saying the emperor is a angel on earth, type of thing.
However in the english example:
1) an angel spiritual being
2) a person who is an example of virtue, that resembles an angel in 1
3) a financial backer, like an angel backing people (though I'd never ever heard of a investment term angel)
4) a coin minted with the figure of a catholic angel
5) a reference for altitude because angels are heavens high (though again I never ever heard of that term, maybe its air force specific)
6) an explained radar echo like a spiritual being that just came and went

All of those make sort of sense, and all secondary meanings derive from its main meaning.

The unsuspending is not a bad idea at all, I think that's the same method recommended for example on the dictionary grammar deck.

Also another thing you can do, is tag the card differently, lets say for example for a separate deck.

because sometimes pronunciation leads to wrong spelling, half the times I can't hear what people in my own language speak, like everything, it takes some extra information like context and body language before it clicks and you can figure out what it was that you misheard.
Even more important in media, where you have several issues, like character speaking to hastily, too quietly, you can just mishear the syllables.
It would be ok if you already knew what is written, but not so much if you trying to learn it.

migaku is good despite what the faggots here will say about it costing a MEASLEY 5 goddamn dollars. It's so good that it's worth it to save yourself fuck loads of times. It's not perfect though, use yomichan with it for max value, cause the dictionary is fucking garbage and they need to fix it.

Out of curiosity, anyone knows if there exists a browser-based Rikaikun-like application anymore?
I mean, some site where you would input a url, and the processed page would have all the kanji have a box with readings and meaning of the word.

http://www.rikai.com/perl/HomePage.pl?Language=Ja

This site used to work very well and it helped me a lot back in the day whe I was a novice and was reading stuff from tablet and mobile, but it hasn't been updated script-wise since the shift to https, so now every site returns an error message or results in mojobake.

I'm not sure whats the deal there, but I've found a migaku-mpv that is just a free add-on, maybe a fork from before they started charging for it.

I remember some anon demonstrating why Listening is important. He said something long in all kana and you basically couldn't read it easily if you were shit at listening because there was no kanji. Something about not truly knowing the word and only knowing how to recognize the kanji.

What I recommend you do is mine every word from an anime episode and listen to the episode until it gets too easy to undertand, then keep doing it with more episodes. Or you could just listen more

because language is a song and is full of cues that denote mood, intent, objective, emotional state of the speaker and so on, and you pick all of those up subconsciously, then your brain eliminates things that are clearly incorrect, making guessing the message much easier
written language has a lot less information and is an unnatural abstraction to begin with
