It's not about this at all. It's more about Shirou being reborn to his original self that doesn't have Kiritsugu's programming that he was given at the start of his new life in the fire. Shirou is literally reborn as someone who discards that baggage and proclaims that his original ideal is to protect the ones that he loves over being an ally of justice. UBW is about him following that ideal/programming and continuing to follow his father's ideal even if it isn't his own. It's about a fake ideal become real by Shirou following it to the end of his life. HF is about Shirou's true ideal being manifest and his real desires as a human over his idealistic/robotic self. It's obvious Nasu is going for an ending that has his robotic nature change into a more human one as he's able to live for himself and the ones he loves over trying to protect all those that he sees that are crying. Tsukihime had a lot of weird holes in it. Like how the Ciel route is half just a copypasta of Arcueid's route. Kohaku's route was something he wrote in a week after something a beta-tester said to him. Nrvnqsr comes and goes and has nothing to do with anything. Satsuki's death doesn't leave as much of an impact as it should considering what it was supposed to be. The story=exposition ratio is way too stilted. Don't get me wrong, all of Nasu's stories have ludicrous amounts of exposition, but the problem is over half the things that come outta, say, Ciel's mouth are just pure exposition. Furthermore, a lot of the shit that happens feels too abrupt. Roa's base was in the school the whole time and no one knew about it? No one noticed anything strange? And it's pretty inconsistent at times too, like some things are way too convenient.

The Near Side introduced a bunch of cool ideas and concepts and did fuck all with it. It's not like they actually hit a dead end with the series or anything, there's tons of content they could expand upon.

I love happy endings but setting up for a tragic ending then bailing out last minute is a bit lame. Akiha's true ending is a clear example of this. Shiki kills himself for Akiha's sake but it just so happens that Ciel is there, watching, ready to assist him on the spot (but not to help with SHIKI apparently) and takes him to the church in the nick of time to save him somehow and also restore his own life energy permanently?
