is driving me nuts...
Got into Touhou about 2 weeks ago. I ain't that bad but I haven't 1cced the game yet and my highscore is only about 50mil. Should I move on to another Touhou game or persevere (is it too hard for someone relatively noob)?

sorry OP, but I don't want to create a new thread just for this

I'm trying to use the vsync patch for EoSD, and I get this... halp

What is this vsync patch?
Also, what's the general opinion on the retexture mod - is it considered as cheating? I'm tempted to use it seeing as how I'm also playing TH07 and TH08 and flipping back and forth between hitbox and no hitbox is pissing me off.

Yes.

EoSD is a difficult game. It gives you relatively few resources to deal with mostly random bullet patterns, the system is archaic (even just a single game ahead is a vast improvement) and while the character selection is fairly balanced it's also much less up-front about their strengths and weaknesses. For a new player, Perfect Cherry Blossom is probably more forgiving.

Grinding on Lunatic is not the way to go, despite what some people will say. You do not learn to play by looking at a wall, saying "I wonder how to dodge that." and eating it. If you're against the idea of memorizing everything and how to deal with it, play a variety of shooters until you realize that you deal with situations more often than barrages. Learn how to deal with situations, and things will become much easier.

Other than that, bomb more. Bombing is not failing to dodge, dying with bombs in stock is failing to bomb. The sooner you build a bombing reflex, the better. Don't be afraid to watch replays if you really can't figure out how to tackle certain patterns, but make sure you watch with a learning eye. Don't learn "Move there", learn why you are moving there. Most importantly, don't give up.

And yeah, the hitbox patch is cheating. Don't use it unless you're willing to admit that you suck too much to do it legitimately.

I put it on but it didn't affect my capacity to dodge at all (i.e. I still lost most of my lives to Sakuya and then Remilia finished me off)

>> No.4110827

Well EoSD isn't easy, don't feel that bad if you can't 1cc it yet. I too started with it, I suggest to move on only if you really think you are not improving on it.

Remember to use your bombs if you plan on 1cc'ng. Dying with 3 bombs on stocks means 3 spellcards that you could have passed easily but you didn't. When I first started it I planned exactly where to use each of the 20-30 bombs the game gave me at specific portions of the game so I would have enough lives to beat Remilia.

Also, abuse of the practice mode. Make sure you finish the game with continues first, then go to practice and try to beat specific stages with goals. The Magic Library is notorious for been a n00b killer stage, start with that and set yourself a goal like "reach Patchy without dying". Certain parts of the stage (or spellcards) can easily be cleared if you know what to do, for that I suggest you either download replays or watch people playing the game over Youtube. It is really helpful.

Other than that, I suggest you start with Reimu since her movement is kinder for beginners, and make sure you set the starting number of lives to 5. You can always go back to the game and clear with 3 or 0 when you get better later.

If you want more tips, add me on steam, my id is sibilla8. I would be glad to help.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'm kinda doing most of that stuff already but I can't really say I've mastered Patchy or Sakuya - by the time I get to Remilia I have like one or two lives left and that's not enough. I've definitely improved but it's still too bloody difficult and moving on to PCB or IN means forgetting some of the spellcard patterns I've learned and getting used to having a hitbox :| ...

One of the things you'll get a hang of is feeling where your character is, rather than looking at the hitbox. When you can look slightly ahead of yourself is when you stop noticing that you even lack a hitbox.

>> No.4110902

One more thing - windowed or fullscreen, which is better? I tend to have a better overview of patterned spellcards when playing in a window but suck slightly more when it comes to dodging random streams of bullets.

>> No.4110912

>>4110902
Fullscreen of course. What made you think that it's better to play windowed? You have a wider point of view for instance.

How many of /jp/ play on Easy?
I can complete easy with no hassle but I have yet to complete normal - it's annoying being stuck between the two easiest difficulties.

I used to play Easy, but you never get good doing that. Keep soldiering on on Normal and you'll 1CC it eventually.

Do you get anything for collecting all the spellcards (each at least once) or is the menu under score displayed for fun only?

This guy's got the right idea.

The way I see difficulty levels is, you're as good as you let yourself become. If you play on easy, you will never be more than easy. If you play on Hard, then you'll have a much harder time, yeah, but when you finally pull it off you will have improved that much. I have proof that it works, too - a good friend of mine stopped losing at fighting games when he stopped tolerating easy mode.

Like. Forever. I haven't beaten him since.

I played EZ MODO over the holidays at my parents', because that ages-old keyboard only let me dodge in one diagonal direction while focus
sing, and then I couldn't bomb.
It wasn't satisfying at all.

Yeah, at first I played EoSD on Easy until I got tired of it.

The worst thing is, I haven't really "legitimately" beaten, much less 1CC'ed, any Touhou game... my PC is so fucking shit I get slowdown rates of up to 30% in all games past Imperishable Night.

I've beaten them all and 1CC'ed MoF, but seeing as how things are one hell of a lot easier in slow computers, it's like if I haven't beaten them at all. Feels bad, man.

They're not really. It puts a limiter on your reaction time.

I have a really slow computer I play Touhou on sometimes. To this day, I have never successfully deathbombed on it. EVER.
