Umimachi is still my favorite of his, peak comfy. Otherwise, I'd recommend just going through the filmography from the start, his early films are rather different from what he does now, but Maborosi and After Life especially are brilliant.

What happened to Kurosawa after Penance? I just finished his filmography today, watched almost all of his works (I could say around 98.5% of them), which includes his short films, his V-Cinema works and some of those early obscure 危ない話夢幻物語, DRAMADAS and 学校の怪談 TV movies I found on YouTube and Nico Nico, everything including those were very good, to great, to masterpieces, but then comes the disappointment that was Real (2013) and everything after it was ranging between bad to average.

It's true that Kurosawa has been struggling to make something as good as his pre-2010s years but nothing is truly hitting "that" spot, iykwm. When I say that, I'm exclusively referring to the stories and the screenplays he writes. As far as his directing and editing styles, they're all still top-notch. Watching all of his works for them even if the stories are mediocre is still well worth it (seriously, the direction of Journey to the Shore is especially incredible despite the lacking story).

I remember when I first watched it, I told myself that maybe Kurosawa is finally going back to his nihilistic origins and making something as good as Cure, Charisma and Pulse but I still had my doubts as the entire cast was made of mainstream actors who are stable in popular tv dramas which means it was made with the mainstream audience in his mind. My doubts were confirmed as it felt so toothless for a psychological-thriller film. It was so tame and shallow, as if I was watching a TV drama. It's like he was afraid to go the extra mile to make it really "creepy". Like he was afraid of making it controversial. When I say it felt like it was a TV drama, that's because it was indeed shackled by the same restrictions of those suspense TV dramas we see every season. I was overwhelmed with a sense of dissatisfaction when I finished, it felt like something was really missing. It had a great potential but he didn't do much with it. Like I said on my previous post, the direction style is still great, it's just the storytelling and the screenplays that aren't that good anymore.

That's exactly why Wife of a Spy was a return to form for me. Watching Hamaguchi's screenplay with Kurosawa's trademark more expressive mise-en-scene was a joy.

Wife of a Spy was phenomenal for an NHK TV drama. Terrific kind of throwback dramatic thriller, its tense moments are filled with a disquieting calm that unnerved me, Kurosawa's specialty. Kurosawa and Hamaguchi blended nicely here. He studied under Kurosawa in Todai after all. Makes me think how far they could have took it if they weren't shackled by the TV production conventional trappings.

Can someone tell me why people say the GTO live actions are good? As a HUGE fan of the anime, I think all the live action attempts have been shit. The actor from the 90s show has some charisma to him and a nice smile I'll admit but they're still shit shows

Ishii Gakuryu proves that even after changing styles in the 90s he can still make incredibly punk and chaotic films. This film has no rules. The audio is deliberately muffled, the editing is abrupt and the final 20 or so minutes are absolutely bonkers. Borrowing elements from his older works like "Charge! Hakata Gangsters", "Shuffle" and "Electric Dragon 80.000 V", he created one hell of a wild, energetic and entertaining mess.

It's insane and maybe a bit too silly at times but it's shaped up by Ishii's directorial talent to make it a unique fun experience. The storytelling was told smoothly despite how crazy the film is and the way it reaches the climax is incredible.
