There's this really smart guy I know who graduated summa cum laude in asian studies and math. Very fluent in English, Chinese, and Japanese. Also a pretty sociable guy and not quite the insufferable nerd you would expect with that sort of academic background. Still young, like 24 or 25.

He hasn't had a job ever since graduation and doesn't like it when people ask him what he does or what he studied.

Let me tell you a story about myself. Before graduating i took a "year off" and moved to China because I knew some people there. I didn't speak Chinese, and English is not my first language. I quickly got a job as an "English teacher" and a couple of months later I made the equivalent of 25 euro/hour teaching over-privileged kindergarten kids names of animals. I worked ten hours a week and spent the rest of the time doing drugs. I'm not saying this is great or anything, after all I went back home to graduate, but to me it's the "worst you can do". No matter what happens to me in life I can never do worse than working ten hours a week and fucking Asian college girls on coke (me, the girls don't get any).

So my advice to your friend is to move to China or Japan. If he is actually fluent he could get a well paying job as in-house interpreter, especially in China where English skills among adults are non-existent.
