So I've been learning Japanese for not like three weeks now and only know hiragana, and a bit of katakana and just started with Genki I. I went to a japanese restaurant with a friend and there were those two waitresses, an older lady and a younger lady. I tried to use some simple things that I had already learned, such as ありがとうございます and いただきます and those little things already made both of them so happy, the older lady proceeded to write some Kanji on a small piece of paper, explained the meanings and then told me how she used to learn them in school. The younger lady just put on the most genuine smile I have ever seen when I thanked her in japanese and told us about how she still struggled with other languages. It made my whole week, I wouldn't have ever expected that those small moments could create such wholesome experiences! :)

Is it effective to read light novels instead of normally studying?? My knowledge background, so I'm japanese but I live in a foreign country for a long time, actually most of my life, but I have been speaking Japanese since I have a ton of Japanese friends and I watch a ton of anime. I think I'm pretty decent at vocabulary and I can speak Japanese normally, but I can't read kanji since I almost never encounter a Kanji that much. As of now I'm reading a light novel to be able to memorize kanji, because I think it's a lot stressful than just writing the kanji multiple times, although I can see my progress I'm starting to feel doubtful of myself to keep "studying this way" since I have no idea how to study or memorize a kanji. I have tried srs like anki for like a month and I did see some progress but I can't keep doing it since it's so stressful
