How do you get good at Touhou if you're really bad at it. And I mean really really bad. I usually can't get past the second boss of any Touhou on normal mode (not using bombs, trying to capture spell cards).

You play them.

Lunatic mode only

Isn't that the point of Touhou?

>> No.4094307

If you can't get past the second stage, why are you trying to capture spell cards, exactly?

Play more. Don't push yourself too hard, maybe no bombs might be too much for you.

I tried lunatic for a few times and gave up, going back to normal mode.

Suddenly, normal mode was a breeze for me.

I started playing two months ago and used to be about as bad as you. Suggestions:

- DONT go down to easy mode. Seriously, it stops being a game and will do jack shit to make you improve.
- You are playing with a keyboard yes? Don't play it with a gamepad.
- For very precise movement make sure that you sit comfortably and that your arms/elbows are well supported. You will keep dieing unexpectedly otherwise.
- Bomb whenever you feel overwhelmed. New players don't bomb often enough.
- Start with Perfect Cherry Blossom, not Imperishable Night. The latter will teach you bad habits like the ridiculous death bomb window.

Have fun, keep playing (especially in practice mode) and you will improve.

Not OP, but does a keyboard significantly improve performance? I've been playing on a gamepad for a while now, and it's been alright. Still not that great, but it's been comfortable. Would switching to a keyboard give any certain benefits I'm not aware of, or should I use what is comfortable? Same question for a stick; I play a lot of fighters and am confident with a stick, but never actually tried it. Are there any special sticks specifically for shooting games (To help with precise movement, I would assume)?

>> No.4094458

OP is as bad I was when I started. I remember Chen's spellcard where the bullets turn to falling white dots would kill me EVERY TIME no matter what.

>> No.4094473

Get as far as you can. Try to capture spell cards but use bombs if you think you're going to die (they're easier to get back than lives after all). Continue if you run out of lives and keep going - you can go on practice mode after you beat the boss and figure out how to capture the spell cards much more easily that way.

>> No.4094482

I don't know man, I made a pact with Satan and suddenly i became good at touhou.
I wish there was an easier way like practicing or something.

When will people learn that Last Word =/= Deathbomb?!

Imperishable Night has a normal .1 second deathbomb window. It THEN has a .11-.6 Last Word window. The counterbomb takes 1 bomb and activates a normal bomb attack. The Last Word takes 2 bombs and activates a considerably more powerful attack.

I don't think any type of controller is objectively better than another, so use what you're best at. You might as well try the keyboard to see how you do.

And yeah you can buy arcade sticks made for shooting games, or at least marketed to people who play them. I doubt they're better than any other good controller.

>> No.4094511

>>4094497
It's still deathbombing, and it doesn't encourage you to be fast on the X key.

>> No.4094513

>>4094506
You don't need a STG stick, standard arcade sticks made for fighters will do. They are the best controllers.

>> No.4094525

>>4094506

Ah, thanks. I give the other two a shot and see what's best.

Probably the only thing I can think of that's disadvantageous for a controller is that you have to use shoulder buttons. It's hard to hit Focus+Shoot+Bomb with just your thumb, so at least one or two of those buttons has to be mapped to a shoulder without causing some discomfort.

Honestly, though, after playing Mario and Mega Man for most of your childhood, you get used to holding down one button and tapping another. It's really just the "Bomb button" that throws me off at times.

>> No.4094533

Are you spending almost all of your time holding shift for focused movement? Don't, you need to learn how to dodge while moving at full speed or you'll get trapped a lot more/miss items, etc.

Dying with unused bombs? At this point, think of each as an extra life that gets wasted when you actually die. Don't forget you can use them to collect items too

Worrying about score? Score means absolutely nothing at all until you can consistently 1cc. Sure, more Cherry for borders, time for...continues, points for lives could help, but you may be getting yourself killed trying to squeeze a POC get in or trying to dodge a dense spray unfocused.

I'd recommend either Reimu or Sakuya-A for starting out in PCB. Don't forget bombs do different things when fired focused or unfocused.

In IN, Border Team is the easiest team to use, but will teach you bad habits (aforementioned HUEG deathbomb window, Yukari's shot, not dodging familiars). Magic Team will frustrate you because of how shitty Alice is in general (when not MALICE CANNON-ing), Scarlet Team requires a bit of practice and memorization to be useful, and Ghost Team will take a lot more to get used to Youmu's shot, though it and solo Youmu are probably my favorites to use.

EoSD is fine too if you prefer to play them in order. Not bad for training as the difficulty usually comes from bullet speed rather than density in this game, but you'll really feel a difference compared to any other game. Just remember your deathbomb window is near non-existent

I would suggest staying the fuck away from SA and UFO during the learning process too

I actually started with Shoot the Bullet.

STGfags will eat me now, but it's the best for newcomers simply because it's more fun. You don't have to repeat the parts you already passed over and over again, for starters. It's also even more of a puzzle game than an ordinary Touhou, and, well, puzzles have infinitely more appeal for most people.

>> No.4096011

EoSD is good training, and also for getting used to actually using your bombs. The two-life Practice mode makes you appreciate how to use all the resources at your disposal in order to beat the game.

Using EoSD Practice and grinding each stage until I could beat it with only the two starting lives and whatever others were available in the stage got me from being curbstomped by Cirno to 1CCing Normal in about a week,

>> No.4096015

>>4096003
Exactly. And it gets you into the rhythm of making plans for the stages of the rest of the Touhou games instead of just ad-libbing the whole thing, which greatly improves your survivability.
