Nature isn't exactly "humane" either. On shit like National Geographic, you can see hyenas ganging up on a small wildebeest calf, chasing it down while occasionally biting a chunk of meat off. And once it collapses, they start digging into the stomach, wrenching guts and other innards out while the poor thing still screams.

What do you expect people to do to catch whales anyway? They're not exactly easy to knock out with a swift strike to the neck or anything. In the same vein, shocking it with high voltage doesn't work with something that big and is in the water.

What a retarded argument. We shouldn't care about other creatures that can feel and appreciate pain because they are incapable of returning the sentiment? If there are life forms in the universe far more advanced than us let's hope don't feel the same way you do.

Of course your pet cares about you. Animals are completely capable of forming bonds and companionship.

However, would a stray dog care? I'm afraid not.

If you'd like to think of a type of animal that deserves coddling, I would go with Elephants. The only creature that has willingly demonstrated compassion for complete strangers of any species. They attempt to bury the dead of their own, and even other species as well. They deliberately attempt to avoid crushing all the tiny creatures under them if they can.(Now you know why Elephants are "scared" of mice and avoid them.)

What an amusing strawman. If a civilization was more "advanced" than us, they would surely be sentient, and thus capable of compassion as we are. In fact, one would theorize that they would be even more so, as they are more "advanced" than us.

Of course, not that this matters. The nature of the universe is cruel, judging by the nature of life on earth. It is highly likely that any intelligent life we encounter will be exactly as you say. Completely alien to us, and incapable of compassion as humanity perceives it.

Nature has demonstrated that caring for other species beyond your own is a loser's game.

Compassion usually comes with the social aspect of many species.

If you were just some predator animal like a leopard, you wouldn't need to give a shit about anything else.

However, if you're a social species, what happens to one member of your group is important, and to not give a shit means your group isn't going to last very long.

On the other hand, you could just be like ants, mass-reproducing like mad and eating everything. However, that kind of environment wouldn't be very conducive to growth of intelligence and technology that a social society would have.

In fact, to add to this if you like guilt, Elephants are also one of the rare types of Animals capable of self-consciousness, and recognizing themselves in mirrors. They also have emotions rather similar to humans. Did you know they cry for their own dead? Elephants are also still widely illegally hunted for Ivory.

Hence why my original argument was not that caring for other species is retarded, but that caring for them beyond your own self interest is.

>>4086066

And what parallel did I fail to draw? I stated that it is highly likely that any intelligent species we may someday encounter are highly likely to be as heartless as myself, if not more. The nature of the universe is cruel. I present you a reverse pascal's wager. Why not not bother with compassion for lesser species. On the chance we encounter a heartless species, we will have lost nothing. On the chance we encounter a compassionate species, we will also lose nothing. In the mean time, we will have saved ourselves a headache.

>>4086090

Excellent deduction. Profit is what makes the world go round, and trade is the foundation of humanity. The funny thing about trade is that it's best done without compassion at all.
