Watched it. It's full of Akimoto's cliches and tropes. The characters are as cartoony as his other works, even have similar personalities to characters from his other works. He even hired some actors who appeared on his previous works. Yeah, it's ye olde trashy Akimoto drama, my guilty pleasure. The lead actor's acting, though, felt like a gust of morning breath straight to your face, as expected from a janiizu idol.

bros there was some j-horror film I saw ages ago on youtube, it was sort of an anthology film with a guy stuck in a shrub from a motorcycle accident telling it to someone and there's all these different stories of a family moving into a new house with a spooky gost in it and a 20something year old dude who works as a waitor at a restaurant and there's also a spooky ghost or some sort of demon youkai or something it had a basket on its head, and the intro was what I can only describe as eyeball snails slowly going across a freeway while cars drive past and mush most of them while there's a creepy kids song being sung

am I the only one who remembers or knows about this, it had loads of views on youtube but surely it got taken down, there's still quite a few full films with subs just floating out there still on youtube

Just watched Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy.

Great movie, imo much better than the other Hamaguchi that came out in the same year and overshadowed it, Drive My Car. After the first story where Furukawa Kotone gave a spectacular performance I thought the remaining stories with different actors wouldn't be able to measure up but they were all great in their own ways. High recommendation.

I might actually prefer "Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy" to "Drive My Car". While it received less attention, there is something beguiling about the intimate stories it presents. He magnified the small (ugly and pretty) details of his characters' inner desires with striking simplicity. A beautiful, light yet melancholic ode to the poetry of relationships.

It definitely isn't what it seems like in the first scene. Immediately the next scene the tone changes and you realize it's no ordinary romance thing.
Though it depends what you mean by vibe. It's mostly people talking to each other in one on one conversations, that stays consistent in all three stories. The dialogue is incredibly well written and the delivery / intonation of the actors is unlike anything else I've seen, it's quite something special. Though I guess it's easier to appreciate that if you know Japanese rather than reading subtitles.

Finding out the granular process Kafuku goes through with his actors in Drive My Car is basically how Hamaguchi preps the cast for his movies explained a whole lot about the insane precision of their line reads. I've been chasing something similar since getting into his movies, but nothing quite scratched that itch, it's like he synthetizes the best of theatrical performances with the more civil cinematic delivery, all wrapped in very unassuming, but confident formal film language. I loved Drive My Car (Nishijima's performance was a tour de force, unbelievably pained and intense, yet reserved and subtle), but I also thought Wheel was a far more energetic (not necessarily a failure on DMC's part on that count, the nature of both movies just couldn't be more different) and richer film and Asako I&II tackled a lot of similar ideas regarding relationships and interior lives in much rawer and messier (and more interesting) way.

I think Drive My Car was just the instance where everything came together perfectly for an international success, the concept, the execution, the universal appeal of the film's study of grief and its uplifting message. Not that it doesn't deserve the success, it does, but also there's a reason it turned out this way.

How so? It's a difficult watch by design, I respect the movie, but I can't bring myself to rewatch it either, it's too heavy and not in a fun way. Shinoda's digital cinematography is fucking unreal though, up there with Mann or Soderbergh's great 00's experiments.

Having a further appreciation to music compared to most people, I could relate with having peace with music throughout all the chaos. Found some really good japanese music out of it too, even if it was originally movie canon, but that’s just neat.

There was this softcore R-18 movie I watched in Wowow channel long ago. I've been searching for this movie for a long time. I'm not sure if this was a movie or maybe a direct to home video movie.

In the movie, there's a wife that's left all alone in her house because her husband got into an accident. And then there's this someone who calls her on the phone and slowly but surely seduces her to make phone sex. Little did she know, this person was hired by someone to seduce the wife and he installed hidden cameras inside the house and he watches her on these hidden cameras while they have phone sex. Eventually they decide to meet up in real life, and they have sex in different locations, almost in an exhibitionist manner, like on top of a building overlooking a highway. I think they have sex in the hospital as well. They go to this place where they have sex like they are high on drugs. Eventually the husband wakes up from his injuries and finds out about the affair from the one who hired the guy. He goes to the place where the wife and this person had sex with drugs, and shoots this person, but the wife blocked the bullet.
