Im not big on the yakumos, but im pretty sure they would be just as good without yukari to begin with. I mean, who doesnt love Chen.

If Yukari didn't have to support Ran, she'd probably be awake a lot more often. It takes a lot of power to have a nine-tailed fox as your shikigami.

If Yukari is the strongest youkai, which I guess would make her like the Lord and Savior of Gensokyo, does that mean that everyone in the Human Village worships Yukari?

As such an important deity in Japanese folklore, touhou's 9-tailed fox really should be more important to the story. You would think Zun wouldn't be ruining his opportunity for great storytelling having a character like Ran.

Honestly I like ZUN's music but I'm not too fond of his late-game themes, they are too damn similar (I'm not counting the remixes).

Relevant - not significantly more than any other. The biggest difference would be that the fox is held to be intelligent, cunning, long-lived and to hold shifting agendas in a mythology where most creatures are rather straightforward, single-minded and not very bright. In a fictional setting, those traits would allow for a character with a lot of backround material - not necessarily related to the main plot.
So not saying foxes are any more relevant, just surprised the storytelling tools they allow aren't used more in the settings where they show up.

You make a good point - the Japanese probably aren't really anymore interested in their own mythology than anyone else is. I mean, there are tons of Swedish game studios, but I've yet to see a game featuring a huldra or a marine troll.

Ran exists to be the only old, large breasted female touhou who isn't a raging oversexualized whore.
