Yeah I got big boxes of canned and instant food. I like cooking though so honestly most of the instant curry and stuff is kind of wasted on me. I had enough stuff in my freezer and pantry to last me through the entire isolation period. I guess if I'd lost my sense of taste I would've eaten it.
The snacks and carbonated water bottles were much appreciated though, and one can never have enough canned tuna so that's nice too. I work from home so not much changed, really.

Yeah, the health system here is pretty good. My only issue is that there's not really a GP system. If I have a problem I have to figure out what doctor to go to, but like, I'm not a medical professional, how the hell am I supposed to know? Also private clinics and anything related to quality of life concerns can be pretty expensive. It can be kind of hard to find a trustworthy place that doesn't overprice their service. Well, even overpriced clinics are probably still a lot cheaper than anything in the US.

Unfortunately, prices are kinda jacked up everywhere because it's trivial these days for stores and sellers to know how much an item is worth via the internet.

That said, you can consider taking a look in secondhand stores such as Book-Off stores in residential areas. You might find something for a decent price (or really might not). If you're really interested in specific consoles/makers, then just going to Akihabara/DenDen/Nakano Broadway will probably still be your best bet, even if it is more expensive.

There's actually a medley of reasons. The practical reason given is for landslide prevention, but the real reason is because many small rural towns and village economies are essentially being propped up on government construction subsidies, so local construction companies are constantly looking for mountainsides to pave over or riverbanks to cover in concrete for the reason of flood prevention, all in order to keep people employed. It's kind of a problem actually, on top of being ugly in extreme cases like your pic.

>its' more likely that the government just has a good incentive to prevent mudslides which are deceptively destructive
While mudslide prevention IS definitely important, the extent to which hillsides have been covered with concrete is excessive, you can find hills covered over even in areas that are uninhabited.
>and the japanese just love civil engineering considering they have built the equivalent of a modern great wall of china around their coastline
Which has had a lot of negative effects on the environment. The iconic Japanese tetrapod for example was thought to help prevent excessive erosion, but how much erosion they've actually prevented over the years is slim at best versus unaltered coastline. And now some 50% of Japan's coast is filled with them. All while construction companies pick up fat checks and government ministers pat themselves on the backs.

But anyway, I'm no expert I just like looking at pictures of Japan. Most of what I know about the topic I've read in a book called Dogs and Demons by Alex Kerr, an interesting book that covers a lot of stuff about Japan I'd never thought of before (although personally I found his outlook to be overly cynical so maybe take it with a grain of salt.)

also I was talking about the tsunami walls, the actual physical barriers to keep the water out, of course they don't do shit in the case of giant waves but for cities that are built on coasts in a part of the world where the water likes to behave in interesting ways it's essential https://youtu.be/k6fr6GUSmAA

>Better than Yebisu?
It’s all a matter of personal taste.
Yebisu is a traditional lager. Orion is an adjunct lager, meaning rice is a component.
The use of rice makes the beer more light/crisp/refreshing, which is exactly what I like about Orion.
It’s the perfect beer for when it’s hot/humid as fuck.
Which makes sense as it’s from Okinawa, the capital of hot/humid as fuck.

Unfortunately it’s also pricey. I mean it’s not awful, but it’s only made in Okinawa. So even in mainland Japan it’s practically an import, and does cost more than the standard beers from Sapporo/Asahi/Kirin.

On the topic of beer, I highly suggest trying pic related.
It’s literally the tastiest beer I’ve ever tried. Like perfectly balanced flavor without going overboard anywhere.
Unfortunately it’s really fucking expensive for a can of beer. Pic is the cheapest I’ve found it, many places it’s ¥349 or even ¥399. And these are grocery stores prices.
But it is so damn good, and apparently the price comes from Suntory going all out on sourcing the highest quality ingredients possible with no regard to cost, as well as developing a special brewing process just for that one beer.

Went to Itsukushima in June; never been even though I’ve been to Hiroshima.
The famous giant “floating” Torii is undergoing restoration, so this is what I got to see.

Apparently, it has actually *increased* the amount of domestic tourism and day/weekend-trips to that spot, as it’s a “limited photo opportunity”; they can go see the “regular” postcard view of the gate whenever, but it will likely never appear like this again in their lifetime.

I’m not a fan of Premium Malts myself, but can definitely say I make a very strong exception for “Masters Dream”.

The irony is the only reason I ever even tried it in the first place was because of the price. I hadn’t ever seen a can Japanese domestic “macro” beer anywhere near that price in a store.
So I figured I’d take the bait and try one, and holy shit it’s amazing.
If they sold it for the same price as other Premium Malts I would have never bought it.

Loosely related; recently went to the Hitachino brewpub (they call it Hitachino Brewing Lab). Here’s the menu they had for that day.

I’d assume so; apparently shoving those coins behind barnacles and into the cracks of the wood has contributed to the damage being restored, and shrine staff have literally been asking visitors not to do that for a lot of years now.
I’d imagine it’s mostly foreigners who don’t understand or listen or care; it’s difficult to imagine many Japanese ignoring staff requests and shoving an offering into a torii instead of tossing it in the shrine box like normal.

Same way you nab any other flavor of wife. Find one who has values and interests in common with you.
She’s as big an otaku as I am, she’s passionate about Japanese history and loves that I’m always wanting to visit historical sites so I can learn more, we both like to drink more than we probably should, our politics align, etc.
it also helps that her English grammar and vocabulary are good, though I have to be careful not to use English idioms as she doesn’t have the cultural context and will often take them literally.
>Do you just hide this like you do your porn?
No longer need it. My porn was always JAV with a few particular tags. She’s “J” and perfectly fine with my “tags” as they aren’t overly weird.

But if you’re going to have a non-westernized JP wife *in* Japan, you absolutely must learn/understand/conform to the same familial and cultural expectations of a husband as a Japanese guy would. Otherwise your marriage will be a very short one, if it even happens at all.

Unfortunately they’re used to retarded tourists who give no fucks about being gracious guests.
But it’s not an issue if you make obvious effort to be “one of the good ones”
It’s shocking how kindly you are treated if you’re trying your best to do everything “the Japanese way”.
I honestly think that kindness is emotional reflex due for most Japanese; if you act like a typical gaijin, then you’re treated like one and can fuck off, but if you’re clearly trying to behave/do everything “correctly”, the Japanese “nothing is worse than embarrassing yourself in front of others” mindset kicks in, and they see you’re trying your best but of course still not doing it perfectly, and they think of how embarrassed they would feel in your shoes, so they want to help you.

>sperg

>how big is the difference?
Well it all depends.
You *can* get cheap places in Tokyo/Osaka, but they will be comparatively small and not near city centers.
Like anywhere else, location plays a huge role. Like what it’s close to or if it’s a popular area. Of course now new/large/fancy a house is has a big impact as well.
A lot of property listings in Japan will specify how long it takes to walk to the closest train station, and will often mention if there are any grocery/convenience stores nearby.
>relying entirely on public transit compared to owning a car?
Literally millions do just that.
My wife owns a car because we like traveling to more remote areas that don’t necessarily have convenient train stations. But most of her friends do not own one, her mom does not own one, and I know a number of other people who don’t.
It’s 100% not necessary unless you like traveling on your own to out of the way places.
Cars can be cheap to buy (even new) but are expensive to own. Gas is expensive. Annual inspections are expensive. And then, anything that isn’t perfect on inspection must be fixed.
Many roads are shit. The geography of Japan does not lend itself well to roads.
And the “good” highway-type roads are pretty much all expensive toll roads. Pic related, was driving to Wakayama on a toll-highway. The road itself was more expensive than a train ticket would have been, and that’s not even counting gas.

Many people not owning cars is exactly why many property listings say how long of a walk it is to the nearest station, and if there are grocery stores in walking distance. Hell, many small houses in denser areas won’t even have a driveway or parking spot.

Oh yeah, and you’re required to show proof of having a parking spot or you literally can’t be sold a car. Additionally, you must show the spot is big enough for the car you want to buy.

Funny enough, no. I lived in the US.
She and I met on one of those language-learning apps where native or fluent speakers can correct/coach someone else trying to learn the language.
Just by sheer random luck, it happened to match us up because I was trying to learn more Japanese and she wanted to improve her English.
We started chatting and hit it off, and things went from there.

I’d been a weeb since before the word existed, and knew a lot about Japanese language/culture, but had never actually been. My first trip to Japan was going over to meet her. Likewise, her first trip to the US was coming to see me a bit later.

Pic is Horikoshi Shrine in Tennoji, where we got married.

Nope, actually it turned out to be an international hookup app disguising itself as a English/Japanese language-exchange app.
It’s ironic that neither of us relived that and actually tried to use it for language purposes.
Looks like they’ve since rebranded the English version as a “make friends in Japan” app.
But we didn’t chat long on it anyway; she gave me her Line ID and we both cancelled that app.

Maybe you should look into the whole “English teaching” thing.
Yeah I know people on 4chan shit on the whole “English teacher in Japan” thing, but unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to just move to Japan unless you have a Japanese spouse, or a job lined up in Japan that will sponsor your work visa, or are rich enough to open a business in Japan.

And by far, the easiest job for a foreigner to get lined up is English-teaching. A ton of westerners who end up living in Japan get their foot in the door that way. All you need is a degree. Any degree. You can get one from a cheap shitty online college if you need to, and it’s fine as long as the school is accredited.
And once you’re there and have your work visa & residency permit, you can try to find a better job once your teaching contract is up.
There are plenty of places that will hire English-speaking foreigners, but except for English schools, many of them want you to already be in Japan in order to apply.

Good luck, anon.

My wife and I usually only drive on a trip if we’re headed to a destination that isn’t in walking distance of a station and the area doesn’t have much in the way of bus lines.

But I do love Wakayama. I had some amazing Wakayama ramen (pic) at maybe the coolest ramen shop I’ve ever seen.
It was a ramen shop that was also a garage where a father/son repaired motorcycles and did performance upgrades for people.
It’s open a couple hours at lunch, and then opens for dinner at 5:30.
The dad would make the ramen while the wife and son helped with other things.
Holt crap that man must be so satisfied with life; gets to spend all day working on motorcycles with his son, except for when they take breaks to also make some amazing ramen.

Damn I love visiting airsoft stores in Japan.
95% of literal, actual gunshops can’t compete.
They’re especially great if you’re visiting one of the tucked away ones where you have to go through a door in a small alley and up 3 lights of stairs or something; it feels like visiting a gunshop in a future dystopian megacity.
I honestly can’t believe the insane quality of these things. The owner of this particular store asked what guns I own. Because of course, because American. When I told him my model of handgun, he went over to a case and then handed me a replica version of it. The look, feel, and weight were 100% dead perfect.

I was just blown away at the accuracy and quality, and especially the weight.
As I said, the one he handed me felt 100% correct in terms of mass. I was amazed that they’d put so much effort into that detail when basically nobody in Japan will ever have an opportunity to hold the real thing, and would have zero clue if it was correct or not.
Gun otaku are usually bro as hell to talk to, though I’ve also been told they’re as gate-keepy to each other and noobs/outsiders as other otaku, and would be the same to me if I were Japanese, but I basically get a golden-pass because I own actual guns back in the US.
Which I guess does make sense.

I think its either Tokyo or Osaka, with reference for that red tower, if its really Osaka that's probably around red light and yakuza district, which was just a matter of happy accident because of the people who happen to occupy that area.

For example, I remember a part of Osaka that was stuffed with thick buildings and barely any greens or sunlight around the walkways, very grid like quarters everywhere. But Kyoto, now that was a hecking beautiful city, with tons of traditionally style buildings and houses everywhere, with some of the most gorgeous bar district bordering a beautiful river, that was something else.

Nah, friend, I don’t mean private grade/high school academy. I mean private commercial English school, as I originally said.
You don’t need fluent or even advanced Japanese. The people who go to these places aren’t learning from zero. They’re usually adults who are intermediate or so at English, and want to get better so they can pass a TOEIC or similar exam, which can land them much more salary.
And you don’t need to be “lily white”, and they only settle for British accents if they can’t find an American. Even after getting hired, my Australian bud had fewer signups for his class because thick accent.
All you need is fluent English and as close to an American accent as possible.
Dude said he’s a Flip. I’ve heard plenty of Flips speak perfectly good English with a “neutral” accent, and can sound much closer to Americans than many other nationalities.
If his English is fluent, and he can sound Americanish enough to the Japanese, he might be in luck, and could get an actual Job rather than be stuck in JET’s indentured servitude.
