I'm like 10 pages into my first manga after almost 2 hours and if I had to break down the time spent so far its:
>5% initial reading (only the hiragana/katakana and so far 2 kanji words is actually legible so far)
>15% highlighting text with my app to copy and then pasting or sentences into dictionary/translator
>40% parsing the translation and dictionary entries to understand the meaning of the sentence
>30% making it into an anki card for future review
>10% re-reading the sentence after the above to review what I learned and take as much as I can before moving on

Is this normal or can someone tell me where I can improve my process?
If this is fine and good then I will soldier on but if I'm doing something wrong here I'd like to know so I can adjust, it feels wrong to me.

Okay listen the fuck up, actual advice from someone who learned Japanese through input, is now fluent in Japanese, and live in Japan.

Step 1: Learn hiragana and katakana https://tatsumoto.neocities.org/blog/learning-kana-in-two-days.html
Step 2: Learn extremely basic grammar/sentence structure. https://tatsumoto.neocities.org/blog/learning-grammar.html is a good place to start. Don't trust the shitters here recommending you garbage sites.
Step 3: JUST FUCKING watch WHATEVER anime YOU WANT TO watch AND KEEP DOING IT. Use Japanese subs and mpv scripts.

Yes yes I know kanji is hard, words are hard, whatever. Ignore rtk, ignore retarded kanji mnemonic methods, ignore any bullshit. Use Anki to make Targeted Sentence Cards, not vocab or word cards. Literally just spend time with the language, look up words you don't know in a dictionary, look up grammar points in a grammar dictionary (like this index https://tatsumoto.neocities.org/blog/resources.html#grammar).). Don't fall for fucking bunpro or other shit. Keep immersing.
It takes time but that's LITERALLY all you need to do. At first it's slower because there's a barrier to entry (so-called "first few pages effect") but if you don't give up even just after a week or two of grinding out the same manga/anime/light novel/movie/whatever you want to immerse with, you WILL improve. Just listen and read whatever the fuck you WANT to listen and read.

Is RTK kind of a marriage?
It's been more than 1 year, since I finished my RTK deck with my own stories and such. I don't review the deck anymore because I'm done with the RTK base work itself, however... I am super dependant of the RTK, as I use it every day as a remainder and recognition tool every time I encounter new vocabulary. In fact, I am updating the deck constantly, adding new kanjis unseen before that are not in my deck

The thing is I am unable to get used to the idea of get rid of RTK, on the contrary, I feel like I will use it till the end of the days, even I imagine myself in the future knowing 4500 kanjis, and still adding obscure kanjis to my deck with it's own stories

I am unable to memorize a kanji without a story behind it. Well, it's not that I can't do it, of course I can do it, but I don't want it. It's the metodology, the idea, the ridiculness of knowing stories for 2000 kanjis but 1. What happen in the future with that one that doesn't have story? will I be cappable of remember it?

I see some people do the called RRTK, that's a kind of deck optimized that have the most common 1000 kanjis. Well, nice idea but... what happen to the other kanjis? those people do not use RTK anymore to memorize them? and yet they do well retaining those kanjis?

In the end, I think that there are 2 kind of people. The ones that use RTK as a support wheels for bike, and others like me that RTK has become a metodology of cataloging all the kanjis that should be in my brain. And when my brain fails, there is this RTK database to fix it

I don't know if I am alone in the latter group of people? or there are people like me? or maybe, there are people that was like me, and after so many years, have completely managed to get rid of RTK and feel comfortable with it. Because this is my main problem you know, I don't want to get rid of RTK, I do it voluntarily, but in the end I feel that has become a toxic relation of love / hate

Ignore rtk, ignore retarded kanji mnemonic methods, ignore any bullshit. Use Anki to make Targeted Sentence Cards, not vocab or word cards. Literally just spend time with the language, look up words you don't know in a dictionary, look up grammar points in a grammar dictionary (like this index https://tatsumoto.neocities.org/blog/resources.html#grammar).). Keep immersing.

It takes time but that's LITERALLY all you need to do. At first it's slower because there's a barrier to entry (so-called "first few pages effect") but if you don't give up even just after a week or two of grinding out the same manga/anime/light novel/movie/whatever you want to immerse with, you WILL improve. Just listen and read whatever the fuck you WANT to listen and read.

I’m a little nervous I just wasted 3 months
I recently finished having a basic level memorization of Kanji in the JLPT N5 category based on an app I use. I learned early on through other sources there’s 2 different ways to say a lot of words, the “On’yomi” & “Kun’yomi” ways. While I panicked at first cause I thought I had to memorize both versions of every word, I learned not to sweat it too much when I found out that most are only used one way. I figured that whatever apps I used to learn, when they introduced a new Kanji and how it would be pronounced through Hiragana, that would be the way I would encounter it most often.

Well I just recently heard about WaniKani and tried it out and when I unlocked my first Kanji, the website told me that the way they taught word pronunciation was how they are most commonly used, just the way I assumed most apps and resources functioned. Well the first kanji unlocked said that 十 was written and pronounced as じゅう. That tracks, but then it said that 人 was にん or じん when I had learned it as ひと? And that 力 was りき when I learned it as ちから? Confused and a little nervous I looked through their level 1 Kanji list and saw that WaniKani was teaching different pronunciations of a lot of words from what I learned.

So now I’m kinda freaking out. I knew there would be words here and there this would happen to but finding out that at a glance like 60% kanji that I have been learning, apparently I've been learning the “niche” versions all this time, it makes me feel like I’ve wasted months learning and memorizing. Is it true that 力 is rarely pronounced as ちから and is almost always りき/りょく? Is WaniKani an accurate source of how words are more commonly pronounced?

2. Set up a consistent sleep schedule
3. Buy The Mind Illuminated, read up until stage 4. Start meditating for 5 minutes a day, first thing in the morning. Increase meditation time by 5 minutes a week until reaching one hour per day
4. Load up on native media, start immersing, and learn Hiragana and Katakana

2. Aim for 20 a day, should take 5 months

- Go Monolingual (2 months)
1. Make the monolingual transition, and start only adding 10 cards a day. Can bump this up to 15 once you become skilled at using a J-J dic

State two: Intermediate (1 year)
- Continue immersing and making monolingual targeted sentence cards
- Learn about pitch accent, start learning the pitch accent of words
- Once you master anime with J-subs/manga, start branching out to Light Novels and VNs, and eventually real novels

State three: Advanced (1 year)
- Start outputting
- Start learning literally every word you come across
