So a few months ago I watched the Seven Samurai, I noticed one thing, the japs were fighting over ONE BOWL of rice. Why is that? Was rice such a valuable commodity?

One guy had the lost like a jar of rice and he was totally destroyed....

Is this over exaggerated or was it really like that?

Japs used to be poor before they created anime and videogames.

Because you are a weeaboo faggot who automatically dismisses anything done by western culture as being inferior to Japan.

Overall movie quality as gone down though. Same old shit: blockbuster, chickflick, kiddie cartoon. Avatar was trying to combine all three into one.

Rice was practically life back then. The more rice you had, the more likely you were able to prosper. It was like money. Seriously.

I forgot what the exact Japanese is, but they used to call America "Land of a lot of Rice" because they thought that since America was a prosperous and powerful country, it must be able to grow tons of rice. I think the name was "Daikoku".

In that time period there was no food at all, and lots of ronin.

So yeah they did murder each other over food.

Also, it entertained you more because it's a classic for a reason.

>>4077773 It was like money.

It WAS money. Samurai were paid in a stipend of rice the way Roman legionaries were paid in a stipend of salt. Taxes were levied in rice.

Actually, it's not surprising it had a lot of value. Rice is a difficult crop to plant and grow, meaning a lot of effort has to go into making a crop of it every year and that it has a limited supply, those are key aspects of money. It's also fairly easy to transport, another important aspect of money. Like corn in the Americas, it could also be made into a popular liquid form for even easier transport.

Because back then films were story driven and each shot meant something, unlike today where you can blow tons of cash one a single shot.

Fact is: Japan was dirt poor at that time. The whole economy was based on rice and all their luxury such as silk and porcelain was imported from elsewhere - foremost China.
It is to be understood that Japan has not many ressources on its own, and so they couldnt do anything about it.

Just look at the waraji, the most japanese where wearing. they where nothing more than straw-shoes, worn by the poorest of the poor in other countries at that time.
