If you're new to Touhou or shmups in general, it's best to use EoSD to get some fundamental knowledge on the genre, as it has no real gimmicks to distract you with. Things like how to handle the three different types of patterns (static, aimed and random), where to focus your vision, etc.

You'll get better the more you play, but being able to know how to experiment and change your approach will go a long way when you're stuck on a particular pattern. Having the basics down will help with that.

I'm not sure whether there's a mod, but the teleport controls are really not as poor as some people say. It's just that their exact mechanics aren't necessarily intuitive, and if you don't know them, then failed teleports can get very frustrating, very fast. See >>24249533 for the exact details. Basically, you have to STOP moving, double-tap, then HOLD the direction you want to go for a bit, all very deliberately. Once you understand that, at least in my opinion, the controls stop being an issue whatsoever.

NTA but the yellow bubbles push away green bullets like ripples in water. The actual pattern they spawn in and the way they react to yellow bubbles is static so it's mainly a matter of reading ahead how the yellow bubbles will affect them. Playin' some EoSD again after another break. My second try, I made it to Sakuya despite being extremely sloppy. I'll keep playing all night, so hopefully I'll be able to post my first 1CC. I can do it. I know I can. I just have to accept bombing a few times on Patche's last two spells and maybe bomb on Meiling's last spell. Dunno if the [Deleted] means you already did it, but in general:
From waves 1 through 7 you can hug the bottom and charge the camera the entire time while you move from side to side, Ran pretty much won't ever hit you so you just have to worry about the butterflies and use the camera shot to cut back and start moving in the other direction
Last wave is kind of a coinflip if you decide to charge the camera all the way through, sometimes she hits you and sometimes she doesn't. I would still take the coinflip though, it's a really easy route so you won't lose much time by doing it till it works out

Just tried a Normal run, and the main difference I noticed was that you can't ignore the Stage 2 midboss' second attack by just cheaply sitting next to her away from the bullets (although I remember this from the last time I played the game), which got me killed twice in quick succession. Then I died a stupid death at the very beginning of Stage 3 by forgetting to press Shift when I should've and running into a bullet (playing as Marissa with Illusion Laser).
>It's fine if beating Easy is all you want, otherwise it's kinda steep compared to dropping to Normal.
Normal really doesn't seem that much harder. I died, but it was more of a YASD than because the situation was above my skill level. I may or may not just keep playing normal. Standing next to the ice bitch to avoid her attacks is a cheap way to play, anyway.
>I don't really remember. It took me many months to get a 1cc in Normal when I was a beginner, but it wasn't as long in Hard when I already got the basics down.
Damn. Well, I do have some experience playing DDP. Never 1cc'd it, but I could pretty consistently get to level three without dying.
I can play the first two stages on TH6 with my brain turned off, and then I need to pay attention on the third or I'll die (I die or use a bomb about every other time), and then I get butchered through the fourth unless I spam bombs everywhere.
I'll try to get through stage four on Normal and see how much more difficult it is.

yeah, this method of dodging aimed bullets is a complete game changer. before long you will be able to insantly recognise aimed bullets from the way they move/form patterns, even in games you haven't played before.

as someone who is absolutely not stingy with bombs, i'm not sure how to help you with that. what i did when i was going for my first normal 1cc was to make a mental list of attacks i die to more than like 20% of the time. these attacks i would simply bomb without even trying to dodge them. meiling's last two spells, patchouli's spells, sakuya's spells and most of remilia's spells were just instant bomb for me, among others. attacks like perfect freeze, patchouli's 2nd non and remilia's first spell where i would die less often i would try to dodge, but be ready to bomb at even the slightest hint of danger.

i would also say that i highly recommend MarisaB rather than ReimuB. her bomb will just end any spell card, and maybe having a much stronger bomb will give you more incentive to use it.

>> No.40760494

>>40759817
It might be a bit too early for you but I would suggest playing the first two scene games (StB (9.5) and DS (12.5)) as they greatly improved ability to read different types of bullet patterns as well as making me much more comfortable with moving around on the whole screen instead of staying in the bottom third at all times. And if nothing else they are fun ways to round off generations of games if you are playing through the windows games in order.

Also while it might be tempting to skip PoFV (9), at least give it a shot, because while it uses a very different formula and doesn't really have spell cards in the traditional sense it is a great way to practice dense, random bullet spam.

>> No.40761031

There's nothing wrong with being stingy with bombs, it makes getting 1ccs harder but it helps improve your dodging skills more quickly than if you simply skipped all the hard spells.

The only advice I can give you is to get the hang of the spells in spell practice. Her 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th spells are free once you understand them. 1st, 6th and 7th can be a bit tricky even with practice and they can catch you off guard so be prepared to bomb. 8th is the big filter, and is mostly hardcore streaming, but it's very demanding so if you can clear with 2 bombs used or less I consider it a success. Her survival is fairly easy once you practice it a bit, though the 2nd phase can trip you up if you don't move properly. Her final card is going to ruin your run if you don't know what to expect, but once your figure out the trick it becomes fairly simple.

She becomes one of the easiest when you realize the non-aimed bullets in her first and third spells are static. You definitely should not be bombing those. For the first spell, start at the y in "Enemy" at the bottom of the screen and stream left after the blue bullets pass you, for the second wave start at the 妖 in the human-youkai meter and do the same but to the right, rinse and repeat. This allows you to capture the spell without dodging a single bullet. For the third spell, just ignore the aimed bullets and stream to one side, and move up when there's a bullet in your way.

It's random, but it usually does have one somewhere if you manipulate it a bit. Her movement makes any change of a safespot go away, but for some reason, she stops moving if she follows you to the sides of the screen. If you're in a position where she wants to follow you but can't, she'll just stop, unlike most attacks where the boss will just bounce in the opposite direction if it's the only choice.

What playstyle is that? Zipping all over the place when you should be at the lower 1/4th of the screen?
Because fall is what I'm using and holy shit you can't even focus a big fairy without the next wave coming in to say waddup.
Maybe I'm not releasing the season enough.

>Zipping all over the place
Basically this, spam releases and fly around collecting bullets. Ideally you'll absorb enough to get a level 1 release ready, and you can release again to repeat the process. Keep a steady chain of releases going and you'll be basically invincible for most of the run, with the only real danger being you running into enemy hitboxes or getting caught out without a release ready, in which case you can bomb as a safety net. Aya shines at this because you can use her speed to your advantage to delete more bullets, of course with the downside of her being a bit harder to control and it being easier to run into enemies.

I hated fall in the past because I was using it as just a ghetto winter release, which made it feel really underwhelming. Using it in the cheesiest way imaginable is actually really fun and makes the subseason play out very differently compared to the others.

MarisaB was what I was using when I wrote that, but I've since switched to MarisaA since her basic attack is much stronger against bosses. If I'm being stingy with bombs, anyway, I might as well end attacks as quickly as I can.
I also just realized that you can earn extra lives by obtaining points, which makes things a whole lot easier (and gives me a reason to collect the blue).
I also learned that the game's difficulty adjusts itself.

yeah, on normal you will have to work just a tiny bit to get the final extend. the most effective way of scoring in this game is to have high graze and cancel lots of bullets, because the star items dropped from cancelled bullets give score based on graze. stage 3 starts with fairies that shoot aimed kunai, and you should make tiny sidesteps to graze them all, and you can do the same thing the other times they appear throughout the stage. this will pay off quite a lot on meiling's attacks, since she constantly spawns a ton of bullets in her spells that will all get cancelled when you kill her. this alone will be more than enough to get you on track for the 60 million extend by the start of remilia.

i think MarisaA is a fine choice btw, almost as good as MarisaB, but her Patchouli is much harder IMO.

Like a ton of players? This is often a entry point title for people who also happen to have little shmup fundamentals. It's an arcade game, nobody wants to read things, so they just play it. I'm pretty confident that there are many people who've 1cc'd EoSD that don't even know PoC is in the game, or have gotten that final extend.
If you're struggling with it and want to talk about it, you'll probably get told to not forget to Press X & Shift, or perhaps a deeper dive into how the later stages work.
All that to say that it's more likely to happen than you seem to think.

My little brother wants to get into Touhou and I've been pondering which one would be best as an introduction. He's got like 3k hours in Geometry Dash and his sole interest in Touhou is that it looks hard when he sees me play it. He has no interest in story, characters, music- he just wants a challenge despite 0 bullet hell experience. My suggestions are 6, 7, 10- all are relatively simplistic gimmick-wise, making them easy to pick up for a newcomer.
What do you all think? I'm leaning towards 10 since it acts like a soft reboot and it's gimmick is only relevant towards scoring, and the 2-life start prevents the bad habit of starting with a bazillion lives that 6/7/8 offers.

My least favorite thing about EoSD is definitely the very large quantity of bullet patterns that have the boss dashing around at total random. Very easy to get caught off guard and either smacked by a weirdly placed bullet, or corralled into a corner where you have to fight your way out just to damage that dancing dunderhead again. Annoying!
I know the next few games at least have a few patterns like that, but not as bad as EoSD at least. And off the top of my head those types of attacks seem to have become a lot less common? Usually if a boss is moving I think they tend to follow you more closely?

Laser spam is just RNG, yes. Basically you choose a side based on lowest amulet density, then you go there and hope you don't get bombarded by a gorillion lasers. If you do then you restart, if you don't you may keep flipping the coin
You get very little time to adjust your positioning after the lasers appear too so it's not just about picking the correct side, you also have to randomly pick the correct region on that side too. Only then can you start actually dodging the amulets, which honestly aren't really a big issue

>> No.40849928

I'm just paraphrasing hearsay but IIRC in some games bosses will always dash in your horizontal direction but at a random length (so if you are on the right side of a boss she may move 10 or 50 pixels to the right) while in other games they have a 2/3 chance of moving toward you horizontally and 1/3 of moving away. Some games also don't limit how far they can move vertically which can lead to retarded situations where the bosses are so low on screen you have almost no room to dodge.

It feels really good when you figure it out yourself though, even if the entire spell is just trial and error.

Hey, me too. Requires a bit of luck to get going by getting the right cards in the first few shops but you become nigh unstoppable by the end.

Fujiyama Volcano is a particularly hated card. In fact, it's probably the most hated part of Mokou alongside the "rings of death".

It took me ~250 attempts to first capture some cards that I later became extremely consistent at. Some people may be faster but as long as you get there it doesn't really matter.

How do you make that work for you? I've tried focusing on bombs but most runs I feel like I'm just building up a load of bullets to crash in on me

the urumi passive to stop the bullets completely
I used the mallet to get rid of bullets (I didn't have the drums yet)

spamming the bomb-button doesn't work for me, it makes the bullets move in a little. instead, when I wait until the bomb almost expires and then press, it seems to buffer the input

I'm far from consistent and good, but I absolutely need to stack up on Futo. The idea is to move out of the way from all the frozen bullets, but without the bonus spell duration, I can't find a way out.
Take this with a grain of salt, though, as I'm struggle on stage 5.
Getting 2 stacks of Flandre is very helpful too, especially against the bosses.

ZUN probably should have made it possible to buy the entire shop after beating Takane. Even after getting Junko's card grinding to unlock all teh cards is pretty slow.
That's the only complaint with the game, this is so fun. The card system is just too fun

>> No.40892564

How do I stop sucking?
I've been dying on stage 5 all day. It feels like if I don't get the right cards the first round or 2, there is nothing I can do to recover. (The right cards being Byakuren or Aunn.)
I like the basic gameplay, though. It reminds me of PoFV, which I love. I just don't think ZUN understands that games that use RNG well use it to make every run different, not to make 50% of the runs unfun.
I feel like ranting, so here I go...

Take a good roguelike (hell, lets consider Rogue itself, since that's a good example):
Somehow, almost every run manages to have something going for it, something that makes the player think this could be the run. It probably helps that there is more randomly generated loot than there are random cards in UM and 18.5, since that causes things to average out. ZUN can't trust the law of large numbers here, so he should have made sure there always are economy cards to buy (Byakuren, Aunn, etc), and not leave that to chance.
Furthermore, in Rogue, your damage feels just right starting out. In both UM and 18.5, ZUN decided to make the player character feel too weak when they start out, thus making a poor first impression. Even worse, I'm still weak, because I figured I can survive the early rounds anyway, and I need cards with more long-term benefits. So I'm permanently playing a game that feels bad to play in the early levels since that appears optimal.
To summarize, the card system feels more like gacha than a proper deckbuilding game.
It also sucks that I have like 4000 gold and nothing to spend on, since I've been bashing my head against stage 5 forever. The meta-progression system could use some, too, it seems.

Keep in mind that these are all just impressions by someone who can't even read what the cards do. Please change my mind; I would have more fun if I didn't have to reset due to card RNG.

>> No.40892889

>>40892564
literally just start with Flan and Kaguya in your deck then buy Lives, Futo, Byakuren, and Aunn

Go back and play earlier Stages to get more cards and potentially equip slots+spac if you haven't done so already

>> No.40896314

>>40892564
Just like with UM it's more about your starting loadout than what you'll get in the run. Shop RNG just adds flavor the run (and occasionally breaks it with busted combos on top of starting busted combo).
>It also sucks that I have like 4000 gold and nothing to spend on
You're supposed to buy everything you can for discounts during the run. No fucking way you bought everything, accumulated 4k gold and still can't beat stage 5 unless you were skipping bosses in previous stages.
