Three reasons.
One: It doesn't make sense. Why sit on your ass, drink beer and shove pretzels into your mouth when you could play yourself? It's more exciting than looking at other people playing, I promise.
Two: It's more of a business now, really. It's sick that single players can acculumate more worth in a single transfer or a single season than ten, twenty or a hundred people do in their lifetime and on top of that: Sponsoring, commercials and product placement everywhere.
Three: It's fake. Manipulation is a frequent issue; referee's and players are being paid or threatened to achieve a more desirable outcome than what would be achieved if the game was free of external influences.

I don't watch anime but I do watch televised matches of Starcraft and Baduk/Go/Weiqi, I guess they count as sports.

I don't really see the appeal of watching other people play sports. I mean I understand if someone in your family was playing on a team, but otherwise wouldn't it be more entertaining to play yourself?

Seriously tho, normal guys are conditioned and brainwashed from birth to love sports.
They grow up being thought about it by fathers, watching it all the time, talking about it etc.. so only stands to reason why normals would be so obsessed with it.

My father never "Taught me to love sports" infact I wasn't really into sports growing up.

I didn't even start following sports until I was 17.

I like boxing, but I rarely watch it. Same with American football and basketball, but only the final minutes of the final quarter or whatever (since those are the only parts that matter). And I would only watch these things with my dad. The Olympic Games are something I like to watch on my own though.

Pretty much. Video game tourneys have the same type of appeal as sports, which is seeing other people pull off impressive feats in a competitive setting.
