Early Gensokyo felt so eerie and strange. A bit desolate, and partially like something that's forbidden. I don't hate modern Touhou in the slightest, but there's something I miss about the way the smaller cast of characters, more sinister undertones, and greater unexplained things of the settings created a more surreal world.

PC98 had that beautiful surrealite dream setting, going from it to EOSD felt a bit try hard and edgy but now it's just kinda corporate

I think an overlooked contributor to this atmosphere in the case of EOSD is the Western-themed antagonists in Gensokyo's Eastern setting, it makes for a foray into relatively unknown territory for the protagonists.

>smaller cast of characters... greater unexplained things of the setting
This is a big part of it, while 'less is more' has become cliché in terms of creating a strange/mysterious atmosphere it's no less valid. It makes the world feel bigger and lends the characters and their fantastical powers more weight.
I don't necessarily resent the huge cast that Touhou now has but having so many fantastical and often garish characters with crazy abilities makes it feel more like oversaturated 'high fantasy' rather than a more understatedly fantastic setting with hotspots of outstanding weirdness like Makai, the SDM, Eientei etc.

Music plays a big part in setting the mood as well, particularly the opening tracks of the early Windows games.
EOSD has the alternately serene and tense Scarlet Beyond a Crimson Dream and Soul as Red as a Ground Cherry, PCB has the melancholy Mystical Dream ~ Snow or Cherry Petal and Paradise ~ Deep Mountain.

It's a shame that this eerie dreamlike aspect of Touhou doesn't get brought up too often, and when it is it's often just left at 'EOSD title screen is spoooky!' and likened to being some backrooms-tier phenomenon when there's more to it.
It makes a perfect sense for Gensokyo to have a strange dreamlike atmosphere given that it is a land of legend and mystery.

>going from it to EOSD felt a bit try hard and edgy
It's a game about vampires, it's supposed to feel edgy.
Here's the thing; PC-98 only really has it's music, overall retro feel (which is subjective and fueled by nostalgia) and background graphics (not the character art and designs, both range from okay at best and bland at worst) going for this. The windows era is just better gameplay wise and the characters and writing is better, not to mention still having the same quality of music. There's a reason why people only want Mima and maybe Shinki back and zun doesn't give a shit about any of them, they're all boring as hell.

Vampires don't need to be edgy, they can be doofuses too.
>not the character art and designs
Honestly I just disagree, a lot of it would be flat out good if ZUN knew how to draw appendages. You can't say that EoSD doesn't have at least an equal amount of poor artwork sakuya.jpg
>same quality of music.
Disagree here too,not saying Windows games have bad music but every pc98 track is a banger.

>they can be doofuses too.
Remilia and Flandre are both. But intimidating vampires make it easier for the audience to engage with the plot.
>a lot of it would be flat out good if ZUN knew how to draw appendages
Doesn't save the fact that a lot of the designs are just boring. Granted this is more or less the software as well, as zun has said he doesn't miss drawing on it.
>every pc98 track is a banger
Disagree with that exactly although I do like the pc98 soundtrack. However you can also argue that the pc98 era was when zun really wanted to display his music before Touhou became a "brand."

Elis, Sariel, Mima, Evil Eye Σ/Rika, Meira, Kotohime, Elly and Shinki are all characters I'd like to see back. Not even mentioning Marisa, Yuuka or characters that were basis for some of the Windows ones like Orange, Mai and Yumeko.
There's plenty of interesting characters and designs here here.

I think what >>40629287 said really nails it. I feel like this feeling has steadily been lost ever since MoF or SA, for better or worse. Maybe it's just a side effect of touhou's worldbuilding actually maturing, or I just get this bias because I played the windows games in order though.

Aside from this though does anyone notice a special feeling with HRtP? The game itself is whatever but the music really creates and reinforces a sense of mystery and dread that seems to go much beyond the windows era. I am not well versed in music theory but I think it has to do with the repeating chords and arpeggios that create a sort of hypnotic effect. The lack of any dialogue or character info or lore really helps as well.

>> No.40652832

I used to be into Touhou many years ago. The most recent I played was Imperishable Night. There were a few more released at that point I think but they didn't appeal to me. It seems really soulless now, frankly.

>I feel like this feeling has steadily been lost ever since MoF or SA, for better or worse.
I kinda see it not being the same after MoF, but I think it was more gradual. To me the charm feels like it wore off after LoLK.

>> No.40668497

>>40629287
Yes, exactly. Honestly I wish this "eerie dreamlike aspect" or "nostalgia-like feeling" of the early windows era as it is for me gets brought up more. Maybe not everyone notices it/cares about it but it's a big part of the appeal of Touhou for me.
>>40652798
>Aside from this though does anyone notice a special feeling with HRtP?
Oddly enough yes, maybe it's because HRtP is the first game in the series but it's also very different from the other titles in many ways which most likely contributes to it.

Even if early Windows has weirdly drawn portraits and looks rather simple, it uses colors very cleverly and there isn't really any pointless lore, plot details or anything. It's purely atmosphere and fun, and there's barely any focus on continuity or depth. This makes for games that end up being more mysterious.
>>40648788
I don't really agree, LLS and MS have a lot of things better gameplay-wise than a lot of the Windows games, even if LLS is rather easy. For one, EoSD is just basically a worse version of LLS, not even having some of the improvements MS made. The character designs in PC-98 are also rather nice at times, and characters like Rumia only managed to stick around because of tons of doujin works featuring them.

Yes. I bought a new windows 11 laptop(absolutely proprietary, i know, but i have to have windows for uni) and copied over touhou 6, 7, and 8 and they all work fine. Windows 11 is pretty much just windows 10 except they made it worse.
