I started studying again in April after a ten year break. during those ten years i only watched anime without subs and chatted with randos on tinder. here is how i got back into studying:
1. download Ankidrone Starter Pack and do 10 to 30 new cards per day to jog your memory on the basics. set it so new cards appear before reviews as reviews do not matter. let the audio for the example sentences play. Delete the cards you already understand.
2. get a mining setup going with tatsumoto.neocities.org
3. pick one ln, one manga, and long anime you want to actively mine. work on all four of these together and decide which you want to tackle on any particular day purely based on your mood.
4. start making writings TSCs to learn to write. set number of daily new cards to whatever lets you finish in one year.
5. download condenser (impd — see tatsumoto's article about passive listening) and condense the audio of ALL of your favorite anime. listen to a different series each day as background noise.
6. at some point early on, read All About Particles for grammar refresher (the ebook is linked on the tatsumoto website).
7. start a common name deck. set new card limit to whatever lets you finish in a year.

I took 1 year of Japanese in college in 2008 and have tried to study on my own, but I never really made any good progress. My wife is Japanese and we travel to Japan to visit her family for a about 6 weeks every couple of years in the summer (I work in public education in the US). I’ve done all of the Pimsleur levels, did some Japanesepod101, but I still have very limited skills. At this point I am frustrated and embarrassed that my skills are not better than they are. I feel like I can only understand about 10% of what I hear on tv or in everyday casual conversation. Is there a good program that you would recommend that could help me move beyond being stuck as a beginner and actually learn to speak and listen with more confidence?

I'm pretty early into Anki and have not completed watching the Cure Dolly series yet (about 9 videos in). I want to immerse, but mining at this stage doesn't seem to be a smart idea since I would be mining basically everything and still have the core 2.3k deck to continue through. I know I will be suffering though everything and anything I watch/read, but I don't want to just wait months before even attempting anything.

Is there any merit to immersing now without mining for now and probably suffering for hours for a single anime episode? Or would it be better to wait for a bit?

i write every new kanji a few times when i first learn it and it helps me focus on the details more, but i don't really stress too much over it, nor do i usually every review writing, its just something i do when i see a kanji i like (i like many kanji)
probably not worth your time doing pages and pages of them (i did and that didn't work any better than just writting them say 5 times)

I need motivation, knowing that getting good will take years of commitment is really making me feel like I'll never make it, even though I really want to. Also knowing that there's so much shit that I need to learn and get good at is making me feel a lot of pressure.
